I think UFC just can't figure out how to promote wholesome nonproblematuc fighters. DJ is a pro. He doesn't fuck around, he takes his job seriously and he let his martial arts skills do the talking. There's too much heavy lifting for the promotion- he's not a street thug Jorge or MAGA poseur Colby or caveman Wanderlei or street punk Diaz or French Canadian polite asskicker GSP or jacked white boy Brock and that's exactly what made DJ special.

John Dodson is awesome. So much explosiveness despite his small stature. Just a crazy level of athleticism, along with a goofy and endearing personality, so it's a shame he didn't accrue the fandom his fighting style deserved. It's cool to see him doing pretty well in BKFC, though.
Demetrious also had one of the worst divisions to try and carry. Nobody was thinking that people like John Moraga, Chris Cariaso, Wilson Reis or Ray Borg were world beaters or even deserving of their title shots.

Could you do a list on ufc fighters who became bellator champions? I honestly want to hear talk about Rory Macdonald and his recovery and prime at the end of his career at Bellator. The craziest thing is that I honestly think he took most damage vs douglas lima, after he already had so many wars. Its so weird, its like he was a tank from the beginning and still was becoming more resilient as time went on. I love Rory Macdonald and this story was inspiring to me. Few things made me happier than knowing that one of those fighters you wish got to be champion finally got his flowers and his belt!

It was the lack of talent Comparatively to other divisions with more robust history and deeper roster of high level fighters. For example take Naoya’s popularity. He fights under Mighty Mouse’s weight and he’s a global sensation. rigondeaux is my favorite boxer of the modern era and he’s a 119er. But super Bantam and the like in boxing has decades over the UFC’s 125. I never doubted Johnson was great. I just didn’t see a point caring bc he rarely got the chance to fight another great fighter. Today the talent is much deeper which is a testament to his own career. It wasn’t his fault. But his lack of popularity makes a ton of sense.

The problem with DJ and Dodson is the 125 division. I personally like them as people (as much as I can without knowing them I mean) and fighters, liked to watch em fight as much as I could. I find it strange that even though I know 125 has the sleekest fighters I can never get invested in the division... especially since DJ and Dodson disappeared to elsewhere. Then again I have issues with 170 as well... probably more due to it being the most wrestling heavy division though. Seeing a wrrestler grind against someone for 15-25 minutes is just not attention grabbing.

People loved Coleman, Chael, DC later on, and especially Khabib. When you can take your wrestling skills and actually do damage and finish fights, we love it. Stalemate guard play doing just enough to not get pulled back to standing is the worst aspect of MMA.

Sadly its because of his weight.. People at heavy weights are just more exciting to watch, its less speed and they fall harder.
But DJ was goat, he had perfect skill combo, he was just missing the height to compete in higher weight classes
