I read through some of the comments and I have to agree - Frank Dispensa knows his stuff and he is an excellent teacher. This is BY FAR the best posing tutorial I have ever seen. I will definitely be watching this video several times to make sure it all sinks in. Really great stuff. But right now I have to search RUclips to see what else he has out there. Thanks!
I don't think Frank could ever be described as smug or rude. He's confident and self-assured, provided clear instructions to the models and described to the viewer exactly what he was doing and why. Not only is Frank an expert in his field, he's a great teacher.
Coming from an individual who has looked through a lot of the popular photographers on the internet, this is such an eye opener. It shows how important and how beneficial a legitimate education can improve your understanding of lighting and composition. The experience of the not only the artists but the models really show with the methodology displayed here. Thank you so very much for sharing this!
Regardless of this tutorials age, it's still an excellent learning process. I never thought I would be educated by an old school 'wise guy' photographer....lol. Frank did an outstanding job explaining and discussing the classic portrait posing standards. Kudo's for this outstanding tutorial !!!
Frank's a genius! So instructional. That hour and thirteen minutes passed by so quickly. Respect to all who worked on the best posing video on RUclips by far. Thank you so much M-O-C.
Wow, that was an incredible amount of knowledge to pack into a very short video. I will be watching this one a few more times just to absorb it all. Tank you so much to Frank, Joe, Bethany and Phil for the very hard work you all put in! And the rest of the team of course. I'm still amazed that this information is available to the public for free! Such experts
omg!! after hundreds of videos of how to pose for pictures this is the best one I have ever seen. thank you very much; tomorrow I will take some pictures of families and couples at church and this video gave me great ideas
The guest photographer and educator, Frank Dispensa was on point! You can tell can take pictures with his eyes closed! I learned so much in this video. My gosh, I'm still taking it all it. I plan to watch this video at least a dozen more times until I have all the poses memories. I hope they do a part two dealing with Asians and African-American particularly because Mr. Dispensa said there is a slight different in lighting etc. I know this video is 3 years old so will search on this channel but if they do have a part two, I hope they consider it. Thanks for sharing your expertise Mr. Dispensa! You are amazing and so was the host of the show.
I'm loving this. Parobolic main, with a softbox splash fill. I'm back to lighting 101. Everything I did when I was actively shooting. Great lighting, posing tutorial.
Frank Despensa, like Monte Zukor and Joe Zeltsman before him, is giving you a lesson in classic posing in formal portrait photography...pay attention, it doesn't get any better than this. I was lucky enough to have studied with Monte and it was the best learning experience of my career.
Wow I am a professional photographer who have worked for the past 30 yrs and still learned something that I am sure to use. So Amazing to have a formula. Mostly we go by what looks good but this show exactly why anything go just keep shooters from knowing what really works. Thank Frank.
This is plainly excellent! Concise, to-the-point, and extremely educational; everything one ever needs to know about classical, timeless posing. Thanks for the efforts & for publishing it here for free.
Thank you so much for all this priceless info. I learned more from your video than I have in three yrs of college and working in a studio. TY so much and please keep making these great tuturials
Frank I appreciate, that you're willingness to share your expertise and experience that you learned over a career. Thank you I've learned a lot from watching you work.
Excellent presentation full of useful techniques, poses and theory. Bethany did look discomfited at one point but she coped well with the high standard demanded of her and relaxed well towards session's end. Frank packed a lot in and all his teaching points made sense. Invite him to do another session. Well done, everyone, who featured in the presentation!
Am I the only one who thinks that the straight-on photo of the girl at 1:04:42 is absolutely stunning? Her gaze, neck, the geometry of her collarbone and the dress -- they're beautiful. When he twists her with the arms up and head to the side, her neck and the collarbone just disappear. I'm all about learning proper posing techniques, but you always have to find the right angles for each subject. I personally think that "bad" photo was the best shot of the entire shoot.
I have been waiting for a tutorial like this for a long time thank you , thank you , thank you ! now I can finally pose my clients the way they suppose to be pose you really need to be paid for this tutorial frankly i will be the first one sending my check Frank you are the greatest teacher ever.
I don't normally comment of youtube videos but I just watched two of these videos and the information is crazy rich. I felt like I was in class in college really learning. I could just think baak to so many photos that I have seen of powerful people hanging on various walls and in various gallaries and this guy was spot on.
I watched a lot of 'posing videos'. This one I watched years ago. It still is by far the best 'basic posing' video around. Learn this basics and only when you have this all in your system, then let go and start experimenting so you can be creative. One first has to learn to walk before one can run.
Hi. Do you think people still want these posed type of pictures? It seems like everyone is switching to "lifestyle" which I am not a fan of. Do you have any other links to posing that you can share? Ty
Wow, I don't understand the negative comments about Frank. He comes across as very knowledge, right to the point. He's explanations are very concise. Learned a lot.
SO Glad I found you! What a great teacher! Please, invite him back for more. Maybe posing children or familys. Wonderful information in all your videos!!!
Great video. Just was thinking if the photographs could have been shown as and when they are being discussed. However, was satisfied with them being shown at the end.
Thank you soooo much for fluff free straight to the point concise posing tutorial. I always find it useful to cover what looks right and not so right and why. And you covered this beautifully. Thumbs up for the lovely models too! Awesome!
2021 and it is still the best how to pose in a very classic fundamental portrait. today we got that trendy pose and trend will die but classic is forever stays. I watch this video many time Soni can remind my self what to look for . thank you so much again .
Incredibly instructional. Mr Frank has a bit of a hard edge and could do better in helping his models understand what he wants from them but you can tell he knows his craft very well and is old school in his approach-which actually seems to fit this type of classical posing. This is not artsy portraiture. It has rigid rules that create an old world strong portrait, the kind that remind you of Rembrandts or others of that early era. I love that it has rules and he takes the time to explain them well. Bethany, the model, sure served the purpose of a classic beauty for this classic and old world art form. I will be watching it over and over to better learn all of the great information it has in it.
Thought it was boring at first but as I keep watching, the video turn out to be really great. So many thing to learn, better take notes and watch this a few times. Thanks.
Wow gentlemen that was a lot of very valuable information. I am sure that I will be watching this one a few more times. Bethany worked so hard in this one, hope you paid her a bonus.
This photographer reminds me of Joe Pantoliano! I've definitely enjoyed this 'classroom in my living room' experience. Great video - and a fantastic resource.
Thank you for the lesson! Harmony is nice, simple and obvious but its rules should be taught through the lessons like this, especially in combination with looking at classical paintings. Thus the right proportions, body language and lighting can be partly learned almost subconsciously.
Great video! Frank is teaching, not doing a portrait session, so I think he is interacting with her as an employee for demonstration and not as a female client being talked to sharply. I appreciate Frank sharing his know-how. : )
The fact that you think there is a difference in talking to an employee and a client worries me. I am sure that if you talk to an employee with the same attitude as you would 'use' on a client, that your employee would feel respected more and be more productive and willing to do the extra mile.
This is REAL portrait photography
This is the best video I've ever seen for posing males and females.
Nicholas Fox You should check out Jerry Ghionis.
i can not believe this on was made 10 years ago, still extremely valuable now
Thank you for amazing works!
Frank is an "Old Master" at photographic posing. One of the best I've ever seen.
Thanks!
Bethany is a young Catherine Zeta-Jones... so lovely!
Frank's such a PRO, wow he really knows what he's doing.
It is amazing how the little things make such a big difference in how pleasing the subject looks in the pose. Thanks for explaining it so eloquently.
I don't think Frank could ever be described as smug or rude. He's confident and self-assured, provided clear instructions to the models and described to the viewer exactly what he was doing and why. Not only is Frank an expert in his field, he's a great teacher.

Thank you so very much for sharing this!
I agree with you. This goes back to the classic look of photography. there is really an art to it. and it makes a huge difference.
Regardless of this tutorials age, it's still an excellent learning process. I never thought I would be educated by an old school 'wise guy' photographer....lol. Frank did an outstanding job explaining and discussing the classic portrait posing standards. Kudo's for this outstanding tutorial !!!

Can't thank you enough for all the precious lessons and tips I learnt from this video tutorial! God bless you all and good luck!
The best posing video on youtube by a mile.. The older gentleman is a master art photographer... He knows the craft inside out...
Wow I am a professional photographer who have worked for the past 30 yrs and still learned something that I am sure to use. So
Amazing to have a formula. Mostly we go by what looks good but this show exactly why anything go just keep shooters from knowing what really works. Thank Frank.
How he actually hypnotize the model to move just from his hand gestures. Amazing video
This is plainly excellent! Concise, to-the-point, and extremely educational; everything one ever needs to know about classical, timeless posing.
Thanks for the efforts & for publishing it here for free.
I watch stuff like this and realize how much I've yet to learn. Awesome video!
Excellent, I've learnt more from this in the first few minutes than ever before.
She is stunning, and he is a great teacher
Thank you so much for all this priceless info. I learned more from your video than I have in three yrs of college and working in a studio. TY so much and please keep making these great tuturials

+Ksenia Verdiyan
I think its croped to high but I agree i think its the best picture, others make her look a litle overweight.
Best posing video on RUclips so far. But I agree that he could treat the models in a nicer way.

one light source, simple background, very educated video for me who just start in photography. thanks

this is a brilliant video
Definitely one of the most helpful videos I have ever watched as far as posing and some real basic lighting goes.
He was very professional and kind.
Holy Cow - this is a great presentation. It covers many approaches that the average photographer has no idea or understanding of the why????
Not the easiest to watch but packed with great info.. Going to have to re-watch this a few times.
Still must finish but I am impressed with the level of teaching on this video. It is precise, concise and worth watching many times over.
Thanks Frank for sharing his experience.
Bethany is drop dead gorgeous. Very good video. Frank did a great job explaining the different aspects of posing.
