but where to find words you talking about

What you said about using about 20 percent of known vocabulary for conversation in a foreign language is so true. I have noticed that now, I can have quite long conversations with native chinese speakers even though I know just about 600 words of the 2500 which are needed for a high level of fluency. It is so amazing.

@@tokkigifs I take online chinese classes on italki in which my teacher focuses on reading and grammar and I have another teacher who focuses on speaking. Then I revise the PowerPoints my teacher uses regularly. That’s all haha 😅. Are you learning chinese too?

Chinese is a special case, though. A modern Chinese dictionary is nearly 20,000 words. Compare that with a modern English dictionary, nearly 200,000 words. The number of Chinese words is 10% of the number of English words. Learning 600 Chinese words to have a conversation in Chinese is kind of like learning 6,000 words to have a conversation in English.

I made it a small effort to learn basic European Portuguese before my vacation to Portugal recently. I was shocked of how much I was able to communicate in Portuguese where the natives were able to understand me. Thanks RUclips!

Finding my true dead time and finding ways to fill that with 'quality' passive learning, saving the active learning for time I have access to translators, dictionaries, language apps and communities. It was a great tip to sort out what I could be doing now to further my learning.

Thank you for your advice. Well explained! When aiming for the ideal 80/20 ratio, it noticed it helps to write down all the factors that support and inhibit your learning. By having those listed on a sheet of paper at your workspace, you will stay aware of them and at the same time stay on track. I subscribed 🤓👍

Hey, thankyou for these invaluable tips. I was so stucked in this "acing vocabulary quest" that I was not being able to frame sentences in my mind.
    I will definitely try this.
