How To Make an Excel File Read Only
Excel is a powerful tool for data management, and it's often necessary to protect your spreadsheets from being modified accidentally or intentionally. One way to do this is to make your Excel file read-only. You can also make it password protected which will allow you to control who can read and modify. Here's how to make Excel read-only and password Protected:
*Step 1: * Open the Excel file you want to make read-only.
*Step 2: * Click on the "File" tab in the top-left corner of the screen.
*Step 3: * Click "Save As" in the list of options.
*Step 4: * Choose a location to save the file, and give it a name if you haven't already.
*Step 5: * Click on the "Tools" dropdown menu located at the bottom of the Save As dialog box.
*Step 6: * Click on "General Options".
*Step 7: * Now write the “Password to Open” and “Password to Modify” and Re-enter them again sequentially.
*Step 8: * Check the box that says "Read-only recommended".
*Step 9: * Click "OK" to save the changes.
Now, whenever someone opens the file, they'll see a message asking for “Password to Open”. Once the password is given excel will recommend that they open the file as read-only. If you want to modify the file, you’ll need to enter the “password to Modify”. Now they are allowed to modify the file otherwise it will be read only.

Did you try to save it? You can always edit, you can save the file as new file. But you can not save the modification you your original file.
