Huge fan of the show, former Purdue player during Hazell era and agree 100% on the Walters/Hazell comparison just didnt seem like they got guys ready to go and start fast. Hope Odom brings something refreshing and energy to make the Boilers fun to watch again! #BoilerUp
Really like this hire. One of my original top 5 choices. I think he’s really good at hiring so while I want him to bring Marion as OC, but I also believe it’s not doom if Marion doesn’t come
But bare in mind..Danny Hope was given zero money for his coaching staff...lowest in the big ten... did decent for the hand he was dealt...2 bowls beat Mich and OSU too...
The biggest issue of the Hazell hire arguably was that he didn't bring along the Kent State OC (Brian Rock) who gave Kent their identity of a fun, electric offense. Instead we were given (compelled, according to some narratives) the incompetent John Shoop. UNLV OC Marion is being mentioned for G5 HC and P4 assistant jobs- I sure hope it's a package deal and Bobo freed up some assistant coaching salary caps.
Sure we had basketball on grass. In reality we were just willing to be innovative on O. The go-go would do that for us. Time to bring the go-go and give some BIG team's some fits.
obviously, if Odom gets the right quarterback, he can get some things going. im impressed by what he did at UNLV. NIL issues or not. i dont recall them ever being relevant before he arrived. He obviously can motivate at a much higher clip than Walters.
@@BoiledSports If not, I think Odom can still get a solid OC for Purdue. When he was at Missouri, on average, it looks like he was putting up a good amount of points each game. Granted he had Drew Lock slinging the ball around for a couple years but I think he values offense and will get someone good.
This whole thing about "Defense Coach" or "Offense Coach" is insane. Any head coach and football program worth his salt is going to put resources to both sides of the ball.
UNLV was the school that had coaches lie to players about nil pay which caused some players to announce they were transferring early if I’m not mistaken
The accounts that I've read about that seem to point to a collective and athletic department that weren't on the same page...surpised it doesn't happen more. But really, we're hearing more and more of it...transparency, contracts and base salaries should help. It was a bad deal all-around.
Coach Odom did so much for UNLV...got the football fan base reinvigorated...made UNLV nationally known. But as it is now......UNLV has lost the best coach we ever had. You can bet most of our recruits next yr will opt out and transfer either to purdue or somewhere else. You can also bet allot of players on the team will enter the transfer portal to join Odom. And UNLV will once again go back to a 3 win team. With our mens basketball team in ruins....with no hope in sight.....our days of being revelent in division 1 football and basketball have gone up in smoke. If we don't nail the football hire...UNLV might as well drop out of the MW..and drop down to division 2 status. UNLV simply isn't good enough to compete nationally anymore. Gone are the glory days of tark and the runnin rebels. UNLV fans are sick and tired of being everyone’s doormat.
Stationed at Nellis during the Runnin' Rebels' glory years and saw Ickey Woods play football. It is unlikely a bunch of SoCal kids living in LV become excited about Midwestern winters. Curt Cignetti caught lightning in a bottle at IU. Barry Odom blazed his own path rebuilding UNLV football. What he did at UNLV is almost miraculous. Fortunately, Odom is a Midwestern guy who understands the lay of the land.
Agreed! Marion and Odom should be a bundled deal. No Marion+staff = no Odom, in my opinion. Or… Odom should come with Odom’s new OC pick, if approved by Purdue AD.
@@briansmith5293 7th in the country in scoring offense and 5th in rushing offense seems kinda impressive, no? Passing, at least on the surface, was nothing to write home about (118th)
@@BoiledSportsLet's just say most UNLV football fans are of my same mindset. UNLV hasn't beaten a top 50 team in 2 seasons. His offense just couldn't put UNLV over the top outside of Mountain West Conference competition. Needless to say, he won't become UNLV's next HC. Future inquiries regarding Marion can be conducted by completing very simple Google searches. No need for me to regurgitate Marion's "accomplishments" for ya. 🤣
One of the biggest issue is PU needs to pony up huge with donor money and i just dont see that happening. The powerhouse big schools will continue to get richer, the west coast schools are re-loading, the IUs, Illinois, are now above us and have gained huge momentum. We're walking a fine line between falling years into the sludge and surviving. He better win.
I understand the history of Purdue doing well under offensive-minded coaches, but I don't think there are any cosmic forces at play to make that the case. A good coach is a good coach. Are Purdue boosters so hands-on as to only throw their support behind offensive-minded coaches? I genuinely don't know, but that's the only thing I can think of truly getting in the way of a good defensive coach failing at Purdue.
I think it's pretty simple- high-powered offense is an equalizer of depth/talent. Catch a team on their heels and put up a quick 14 or 21 points, it changes the complexion of the game. Tiller, Young and Brohm's offenses all prove the theory. Most defenses are predicated on top-to-bottom talent. A good offensive mind can find the weak part of a defense and exploit it...cases in point...this past season and the Darrell Hazell era
@@BoiledSports makes total sense. Programs need to follow your thinking: don’t interview guys like Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, Kenny Dilligham (Coach of the year), or even - hate to say it - Curt Cignetti. Get an offensive guru like Graham Harrell. How bout we just let this guy do his job and focus on winning?

Right approach

I liked Hope
Yep. Burke wanted to go as cheap as possible. The results showed.
If he brings his O-Cord ....could be a good hire... hopefully brings a good handful of players too....seen unlv play 4 times....solid program...
Lots of graduating Seniors in key positions...not the most-transfer-ready roster
@@BoiledSports true...but hopefully better judge of portal talent...we will need it
I think the go go offense, would be something different. Missouri is similar to Purdue, and Brohm was only a game or 2 above 500

I’m sure during the interview process Odom was asked about who is coming along with him that’s already on the staff.
I am too...but that can change quickly. Need to get through December before we can confidently know if the coordinator market has settled in
My gut is telling me Marion's not coming with him...a few indicators out there are pointing us that direction
