This has been going on since I was a kid and I’m in my 40’s now. It’s a part of NYC and always will be. But with the internet, you can find your own “middleman” or “agent” and buy your own goods. They are all based in China and use the same factories the name brands use. They will send you pictures of your product compared to the real thing and won’t sent it to you until you approve. Some of the products are better quality than the original. If you know, you know.

It threatens to water down the brand because it goes against artificial scarcity. The whole point of buying a bag that costs $10 to produce for $2000 is so that you can conspicuously show your wealth to others. It's wealth signalling. The irony is that low and low middle income people blow a good deal more money on flashy crap they can't afford than rich people do. So they aren't fooling any rich people, just the other people in the ghetto or trailer park.

The chinese ladidies take you in shop then have hidden door with counterfeit perfumes bags etc... Damn those was the days not into the Brands any longer so I don't really care for them. One of the coolest thing was that fact that buyer came in all ethnicity getting the come up on really good quality counterfeit bags. One of the reasons why people buy. Some times the Senegalese guys walk down the street with large cards with pictures of product on them. You point out what you want, then they disappear and reappear with your purse. Those men know hiw to hustle, they have excellent salesmenship, the whole thing is cool & clever. They will never stop this.

Costco has Gucci? It's the logo you're buying, not the bag. (Though Gucci is kind of a trashy brand, tbh. The trailer park/ghetto just hasn't realized it yet. It takes a while for them to catch up, by which point the rich have already moved on to other brands you've never even heard of.)

To be fair, these reps have gotten A LOT better and practically identical to the original to where 10 reps equates to the price of 1 authentic item. Also, the quality of brands like Louis Vuitton has significantly gone downhill yet the prices are always rising so no wonder no one wants to buy the real deal. It makes sense to be out of $200 on a really good quality rep than out $2000.

There was a very recent documentary and they were interviewing very well-off women. These ladies say they no longer buy genuine clothing, and instead choose to buy really nice *amzclothes* designer clothes that they actually like. They then take that saved money and invest their money into other things such as real estate, stocks etc.
