Even in the old format big teams would finish 2nd, meaning another team who topped their group had to play a favourite in the last 16. Doing well in the CL groups and getting a difficult draw in the last 16 happens every year and is not unique to this new format.

I can’t see the reasoning for teams placed 17-24 being rewarded with a lifeline, they earn a second chance without merit… Otherwise, as I have said, the first stage is pretty awesome because of the unpredictability , randomness and gives more teams an opportunity.. but as can be seen, if the lesser favoured teams exceed expectations, then the more favoured teams, having failed expectations, get another opportunity to progress in the competition, as well as perhaps knocking out a team who had done really well and finished way above… for example if Real finished 24th and played and Young Boys had finished 9th
