His name is Jamie Turner and he is far from just a street performer. He has been on the Tonight show, Late night all the big talk shows etc. He is a very accomplished performer on the "Glass Harmonium" i believe its called. He plays in Old Town Alexandria for the love of music and performing. Very cool guy to talk to during breaks. Crazy to watch him tune the glasses and then crank out a tune.
Yes, you are correct. I knew him when he went by the name Jim Turner back in the 1970's. He is an amazing musician. He and I both were on the Tonight Show, not at the same time, though.
He was a customer at a now defunct grocery store I worked at. He bought his glasses water there It had time be distilled water. Loved taking with him about music when he came in to shop. So great to find this video!
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his 1791 K. 617 and K.356 (K.617a) for the glass harmonica, which is an instrument that uses the exact same principles as this man's performance...vibrating glass. It looks a bit different but sounds basically the same. So, he wouldn't be too surprised.
Mozart did actually see this! Water glass performances were very popular in Europe during his time. The Philadelphia inventor Benjamin Franklin was actually inspired by water glass performances he saw in Europe to invent the glass armonica. The glass armonica was a further development of the same instrument and uses the same mechanisms to create vibrations and produce a similar sound. Both Beethoven and Mozart wrote pieces of music specifically for playing on the glass armonica.
I see this man just about every weekend when the weather is nice and people are out and about. He is a very pleasant man and is dedicated to performing for all the visitors of Old Town Alexandria.
Oh! I didn't realize this was in Alexandria! I actually just realized I HAVE seen this man play when I visited Alexandria once like 15 years ago! It was a very memorable thing to stumble upon while out walking around town
This piece was originally written by Mozart to be played on the Glass Armonica, made by Benjamin Franklin. To see it played on separate wine glasses is amazing!
For everyone saying this isn't real. It is. He performs in Old Town Alexandria in Virginia. I went and saw him one night and it was definitely authentic.
The Adagio and Rondo, K. 617, is a quintet composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for glass harmonica, flute, oboe, viola and cello.[1] Completed on May 23, 1791 (the date indicated in Mozart's own list of his works[2]), it was written for Marianne Kirchgessner, a blind glass harmonica virtuoso, who played the first performance in the Burgtheater Akademie on June 10, 1791, and subsequently performed it at the Kärtnertortheater on August 19, 1791.[1] The autograph manuscript is in the British Library as part of the Stefan Zweig Collection. It was purchased by Zweig from a Berlin auction house in 1930.[3] The work was first published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1799.[1] The adagio, in C minor, is 58 bars long, while the rondo (C major) contains 230 bars.[1]
I live in Alexandria Virginia and I remember asking my parents to take me there for my seventh birthday and this guy played happy birthday for me. It makes me sad because I don't get to go there often anymore and he's rarely ever there when I do go now.
He plays it in another video "Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women (4/4)." Best way I can describe it, if you want to mimic it, is to sing "ah" in the deepest note you can hit while still using a falsetto voice.
BeenieBomb It's really awesome. There's another instrument my band director let me know about in New Orleans, called the calliope. It's the epitome of what I think of when I think about carnival music.
that lovely gentleman is named jamey turner, and he is about the nicest person you will ever meet. so wonderful to see this online, even if i'm only finding it 10 years after it's been posted.
People, this is real. I saw this same man play a piece from Beethoven's 9th years ago. (Look up "Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women." He is the last act on that TV special.) The next day we went and bought some glasses from Goodwill and did it ourselves. People complaining it didn't work for them, you have to wet your fingertips before playing. Notice every glass harpist does just that before they begin.
Saw this performer last night on King St. In Alexandria, VA. It was very entertaining and he welcomed questions from children. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing him.
I FREAKIN MET THIS GUY TODAY! i was in Alexandria on a trip this was the same spot too! so cool. we also helped him play by playing the two big cups for like a background noise
How exciting! Love glass harp. We had the rare opportunity (for us, who live in Oregon) to be at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town and see and listen to this artist live!
You're lucky. For while I'd not see him everyday I know I'd be a fan. It is so artful and beautiful (the glass harp) and the music is so pleasing to the ear.
It's amazing that someone could fill & tune the glasses so accurately. It's also amazing that some rude son-of-a-beeyitch didn't just knock his stuff over, breaking the glasses, etc.
I've seen this guy before. Always by the pier in Old Town Alexandria. He's done the glass playing professionally with symphony and pops orchestras. This guy is amazing.
i am sorry, but i am not letting a very skeptical non-musician get away with thinking that this was faked. what this man is playing is a glass harmonica. you can get them in many different shapes and sizes. the sound is made by the friction between your finger and the rim of the glass. it was invented by Benjamin Francklin and is said to cause insanity.
I saw this guy well over 20 years ago in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. This has to be the same guy, how many people do this? He let me play a drone note on one of the larger goblets with another Kid and he played Cannon. What a trip to stumble on this all these years later, wasn't even looking for it. I always wondered what happened to him, how amazing he's still at it after all this time! Thanks for the post!
I just saw him tonight in Annapolis MD. What is his name, I've already forgotten. Bloody AMAZING!!! "MY dad did it when I was 6 years old. It was my favorite sound. I went to music school and played the fiddle. The day I realized that there were over 400 pieces of music for this, I quit the fiddle. You can't get a degree in wine glasses.😁" Thanks for sharing, I caught this in my search by the table in the still shot.

This man deserves to be famous for his talent.
Imagine what Mozart would have thought if he saw this.
“What the fuck is this shit”

All the people stating that it's fake, have you ever heard of playing the fucking water glass? it isn't new.
The music is all around us. All you have to do is listen.
WHAT?
NitroNTV
It's a quote from the movie August Rush, and a very true statement for those with an ear for music, patterns, and beats.
CDG that movie is my fave!August rush is awesome

+JeromeNetwork That would be freaking amazing

IF HE DID THE REMIX

omg!! i saw that man too earlier this year playing right outside of the place where the entrance to the lake is. He is sooo talented!!
I hope this man knows he had 4.7 million views on youtube!
This old man's skill, it warms my cold heart.
It's simply beautiful.
Sends chills down the spine. These are beautiful. Good thing McBashy the glass harp smashing mime was at another venue.
Gavin Curtis I'd buy that for a dollar.
I'm crying ohmygod this is so beautiful
I really appreciate him playing something a little more "less known" by Mozart, and it's beautiful. What more could you ask for?
I saw this guy! First thing people told me to go see when I moved to Alexandria.

He plays it in another video "Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women (4/4)." Best way I can describe it, if you want to mimic it, is to sing "ah" in the deepest note you can hit while still using a falsetto voice.

Sir, that was awsome!
Now I know how they make carnival music! Super awesome :D

Exactly. Also, you can notice that the glasses have water dripping down the them when the camera zooms in.
The glasses are crystal and the water is probably vinegar (could just be water though)
Nope. He only uses distilled water. He said so himself on that tv show I mentioned.
ahh ok, i used to play around with this when i was a little kid and i used vinegar because my tap water wouldn't work, distilled is probably different
Lucky it's not raining.
Saw this performer last night on King St. In Alexandria, VA. It was very entertaining and he welcomed questions from children. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing him.
I saw this guy for real in old town Alexandria and this guy is legit
how the hell ?

these glasses are making flute sounds!
We know!
Ashikur Rahman Yes, but it sounds way better than a flute imo
IKR?!
That and/or percussion sounds :)
+Ashikur Rahman No theyre not, they are making flute *like* sounds. Flutes produce sounds differently- by splitting the air (or smth like that). ^^
I really want to know which piece of mozart is this?
Mozart clarinet quintet
Adagio for Glass Harmonica
Such a lovely sound created using simple objects. It's amazing what can be accomplished with such ordinary items!
I FREAKIN MET THIS GUY TODAY! i was in Alexandria on a trip this was the same spot too! so cool. we also helped him play by playing the two big cups for like a background noise
I didn't know Ron Paul was into Water Glass music.
yet he's still is on the streets... 2015 ppl.
+Simply Joe Pretty sure he's not living on the streets, notice how hes wearing a clean shirt and tie.

Caleb Benites same question !?
Adagio for Glass Harmonica
If i was there, i would hug that gramps, such beautifull music and talent, and he just play it for the people to enjoy.
