my mom made this and i used to love it. she passed away 8 months ago and i am trying to make her trini dishes to remember her and keep traditions alive. it makes me miss her a lot :( but i am happy i have found this.
when my parents were alive I did everything to run in the opposite direction when they made this now that they are gone... what a tragic mistake I made
I normally add curry as well to my dhal and after it mash up on its own then I add more garlic, pimentos, shadow beny, and dried time, parsley and all purpose seasoning before I chung-kay it... I always put chicken foot, pigtail or smoked bones in it as well... I like it a little thick and it's delicious
I like my dhal a little thicker but I followed your recipe and it taste just like how my aunt makes it! Brought me back to my childhood when all I ate was dhal & rice!
it is so nice to see u are young and love to cook I love to cook to I have a big family so I always in the kitchen when I cook I put love in my food I guess when u love to cook u doing a great job keep up the good work

Hello, you referred to the curry leaves by another name that I did not quite get. If I am unable to get those leaves, is there a substitution, or are they optional? Thanks.
Wow, this looks fab, and really quite different from the way I have learned to make daal. This is more of a soup where mine is more like a lentil porridge. You Trinis also add more hot pepper of course!
Hi , really enjoy looking at your videos , I have learnt so much . Tried quite a few of your recipes and they all came out great .. Looking forward to more videos ...
Hi! Lovely Dhal you made! Question, is it possible to use coconut oil to instead of canola oil or any vegetable oil to put the cumin seeds in? Thank you
it came out really good. next time I will have to boil it a little more after i puree and chunkay it. it had some that didn't puree all the way. but when i reheat it today i will
Hi Taste of Trini. 'chongkae ' . Is this unique Trini Indian ? I am not aware of it being done in any other type of cooking. It is a good way to infuse the flavor of the cumin, garlic and onion. One must hear the sizzle when it is added to the dhal. The cover as a shield is very important. It is done heating olive oil and pouring a tablespoon on buljol. Where else I know not. Maybe some other terminology in another part of the world.
Kerry Sammy i have seen dhal made in others videos from india and the same is done with the oil infused with garlic etc. it is also know as tempering. chunkay is another name for sauteè
Hands down, this is the Best trini cooking channel on RUclips. Please subscribe and view ALL the videos. she uploads videos on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Young lady 👏👏👏👏👏 congrats to you, I'm curious I've always used onion in my dhal, wish I was able to get Curry leaves, I however use ground geera& garlic to infuse. Happy cooking my dear enjoy every moment.
Hi, use ur vids lots to cook. Thx You can drink dhal jus so too eh. You ever try making your own curry powder? Prices going through the roof, a small box of the one i like is $4.20 now.
Fadda gawd. Can I marry you gyul? I love to cook but I have so much to learn. Question, how do you make the dhal a bit less runny? Is it just as simple as letting the water boil down?
The tap water where I live is quite acidic. If we try to cook anything like lentils or beans without a little baking soda they will never soften. I once boiled chickpeas for 11 hours trying to get them soft and it never did work. I did some research and now add a half tsp of baking soda and they cook to perfection in no time.
@@kdotwilly7935 add the baking soda at any point while they're boiling. I sometimes add it right at the start. Other times I cook them for the reccomended time and add a little baking soda if they still aren't soft enough at that point. Then just boil them until they're as soft as you want them to be. I can't give you a time they need to boil because I've honestly never paid attention to how long they take to cook. I just keep checking on them until they're done.
Dhalgutnee (swizzle stick) I remember it was called when I was small hehe. My dhal tastes just ok so I going to try your version soon yes. I tried your stew chicken recipe Sunday it was really good! 💪🏾🌴
Dhal, Saffron,Pepper,Onion,Fine chopped green seaoning,Garlic,Salt = BOIL, then Swizzle,Whole Geera + Crush Garlic in Kalchul = Chunkay (Garlic almost roasted) Mix up then cover pot!! :) DAT IS HOW YOU COOK DHAL..... :)
Hey friend. You can 100% Curry fish without frying it first. However this can be done with only a few type of fish. it needs to be a stiff and firm fish that wouldn't fall apart while being curried. try: Cascadura/hassa gilbaka swordfish Mahi Mahi
Been looking at your channel for some time now love your humility and how comprehensive you are in explaining

I do know about it, that's how my parents and grandparents make dhal, but for some reason I don't like it. I will do another dhal recipe soon. ☺
My grandma and mom always burn garlic and pepper also.

Trinii1 HI, curry leaves are also called Karappillai leaves. However, it is optional
Thank you.
Trini1, in the US, we substitute chopped Cilantro leaves ......for carapoulay AKA karivepallai....🙂🇺🇸

In India (Bihar) the process of making dal is same
Majority of people that the British took from india as slaves to Trinidad were from Bihar, India
We also make Daal in India the same way :)
We are Indias sweetie our ancestors brought that recipe from India..
Sad you guys know you're ancestry but dont keep the names, dress and languages
I love this channel great vids!!

It looks yummy but the only difference for me is that ah roast some whole garlic in the oil too, but yours look yummy too darling good job! 😂😂😂😂

You're just awesome. If you would ever like to come to Scotland to marry a guitar playing chef then the offer is open :) xxx
Thanks for the helpful tips
No problem ☺
Try boiling some water in another pot to add. Or, put enough at the beginning. You can always reduce it.

Why add cold water to a pot already hot and then wait for it to heat again...? Cant you just add hot water so the pot keeps boiling...?
Nice nail polish. Think it's maybe Sasha cosmetics nail polish. I have that one...

Muslim. halwa
Mala Praimroop I live in NY and we don't have any Muslim stores in my area but we have stores that has west Indian food
Mala Praimroop I also brought dhal flour from the west Indian store so is that good
You can find dhal at any supermarket> It's called split peas, Goya has it. Cumin [geera], Tumeric as well.
I didn't get the last bit. You call it chunk it or something. Its called Tadka all over India or Chhonk.
thank you
do you cook your spinach first and then mix it with the dhal?
No, I add the spinach as soon as the Dhal comes up to a boil
How did it turn out hun??

I will be doing it soon. Did you see the recipe I posted today ? ruclips.net/video/-o8ziLIQF1g/видео.html

i will once i figure out how to season the spinach before putting it in the dhal. lol
You don't have to, I cook it just like regular Dhal and add the spinach. It gives the Dhal a yummy taste and texture.
Try using channa dal
Little different from how Cook but thumbs up.

Hey friend. You can 100% Curry fish without frying it first.
However this can be done with only a few type of fish. it needs to be a stiff and firm fish that wouldn't fall apart while being curried.
try:
Cascadura/hassa
gilbaka
swordfish
Mahi Mahi
+Taste of Trini Of course you did R. I bet you make an awesome curry cascadura/hassa... no frying needed there since it's a firm and stiff meat fish.
I curry all fishes including salmon which is very soft if you still want the recipe let me know
