- Point Your Domain to an External IP but keep Your Mail Local
Need to have your website on an outside server but keep your email on your local hosting account, it's easy, learn how in 2 minutes.
Like me, you may have your email on an affordable cPanel hostinig account but need your website hosted on a more powerful server e.g. a cloud server, this is the best way to do that.
Make 4 quick entries in your cPanel or other hosting control panel and have your website hosted on one server and email on another.

One use-case will be hosting your website on a cloud server e.g. on AWS or Digital Ocean etc. but having your email on your regular shared hosting. Now you can have the best of both worlds by simply pointing your domain to the server where your website is hosted. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.
How long will it take to effect by updating A records with different server address?
i did this but it didn't worked
Man you saved my life, this is what exactly I was looking for. Thank you!!
Eduardo I'm glad it helped and you're very welcome.
concise and precise. thank you very much
You're most welcome.
Good how-to video. But I'm still not sure WHY I would want this done. What's the business advantage? More security?
Thank you for watching the video. AS per my pinned comment: "One use-case will be hosting your website on a cloud server e.g. on AWS or Digital Ocean etc. but having your email on your regular shared hosting. Now you can have the best of both worlds by simply pointing your domain to the server where your website is hosted". I hope this helps.
Hello. I started out with G Suite for a professional email. I set up two email accounts with my domain name. I pointed the domain to Hostgator because I’m building a website now. Do I need to follow these steps for my two email accounts? I’m not even sure I understand all of this, however I saw that pointing a domain to another host can affect the email accounts.
Hi Jae Ross, thank you for taking the time to watch the video, and for your question.
I assume your two emails are already working with G Suite, if so then any further G Suite emails will work if you add them. If you're wanting to use your free mailboxes that come with your cPanel hosting account AND G Suite at the same time, I'm not sure this is possible, choose one or the other and go that route.
I hope I'm understanding your question correctly, if not please reply and I'll be happy to help.
Web Assist Yes. My emails are still working. I used one of them to send a test email to itself and it worked so I’m guessing nothing has changed since I pointed the domain to Hostgator.
My question was did I need to take any further action? I don’t want to stop using G Suite. I like using Google. I thought I had more steps to take since I have gotten Hostgator involved for hosting my website.
I think you are telling me I don’t have any other steps right? Hostgator will host the website and I can continue to use G Suite for my email needs right? Also you are saying if I try to use cpanel for email services at the same time I’m using G Suite for email services, I’ll have problems correct? Thank you for replying so rapidly. I really appreciate that.
You're most welcome Jae. Indeed you have it correct on all fronts, you don't have to do anything further and you can use G Suite along with Hostgator hosting your website. And yes if you had to change MX entries to use cPanel mailboxes, your G Suite mailboxes would stop working. So if your emails are working fine as is it's setup correctly and no further action on your part is required.
Thanks again for watching the video Jae.
Web Assist Thank you so much. Have a great day! You gained a new subscriber.
Jae you're most welcome, and thank you for subscribing, it's much appreciated. :)
Hi, Im learning how this hosting stuff works. Just a question. Can you point your domain name to 2 different outside server? one for web hosting and another one for email hosting.
Hi Muhammad, thanks for watching the video.
Indeed you can, the hosting will be the A record, your email will be the MX record. I recommend asking your hosting company to help you with this if you're not sure, they are usually quite helpful.
@@WebAssist-Sites OK I'll try then. Thanks!
@@muhammadkhazin7607 Excellent, once you know how you'll be much more comfortable doing it in future.
Thanks a lot you save my life !!
LOL, glad I could help and you're most welcome.
Hey there, thanks for the tutorial. I have a domain registered on Namecheap, an email on Zoho mail & a website/funnel on Groove. Currently I'm only able to target either the mail or website to the domain. Wanna know how can I target/add records of both in the DNS. Kindly ignore my words if misinterpreted coz I'm not that technically sound in this matter
Hi R V, thank you for your comment and watching the video. I think I understand what you're asking, in your domain control panel, you can specify different records for the various items e.g. MX records will be for mail
I too am trying to split my web host to Groove via their arrangement with Cloudflare and point the email to Microsoft 365 for my email server. No luck yet... hope to talk to Groove shortly to see if they can help. Thank you for this video.
Hi Web Assist,
Does this process also work in a shared hosting scenario between two different accounts (external ip is different but same hosting)?
Thanks
Hi Fernando Vasco and thanks for the question. It should work correctly as you're specifying the MX record. Some hosting companies may handle local (same server) email delivery differently though, I'd give it a test and see if it works correctly (keeping in mind that propagation may take 1 to 24 hours to complete before running the test).
@@WebAssist-Sites The hosting support told me that it's not possible on their infrastructure.
Thanks anyway.
@@fernandovasco709 You're most welcome.
am not getting clearly hosting side need to update or email side we need to update a record and cname changes
Hi Real Me. Thank you for watching the video and comment. I'm not sure what you are asking, if you can be more clear I'll be happy to respond?
Thanks for instruction
what about mx record?
Helped me a lot!! Thank you!
You're most welcome Financeiro, thank you for the kind feedback, it's much appreciated.
Hello. Thanks for the video. I have a small question for you and i would be more than gratefull if you could help me out. On the second server, (172.16.254.1) what are the dns configuration i have to make?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Johan. You're very welcome. I'd need a bit more context to help, if you can give me an outline of the setup I'll try to help?
Hello Web Assit, I have a domain with 2 emails on google. Can I point my domain to godaddy for building a website and still keep my email on google? My worry is that I can lose any old msg, contact or etc. Thanks
Hi Josi, my apologies for not replying, it seems the notification from YT was not sent for your question. You can point your A Record to one hosting account and use another for mail or another service for mail.
Hi, the time of response of our hosting is slow, so we want to change the DNS to the new server and from there point to the old server where our mails are. Can you help us with that escenario? thanks
Hi Greg Minaya, certainly, please open a ticket by visiting getwebassist.com and clicking the "Get Support" link at the top right of the page.
Hi, i want to do the same thing, however got a problem for incoming/email to the email, the error shows up was "Relay access denied".
Hi Ahmad, "Relay..." issues are usually caused by authentication issues, try one of the following solutions outlined here: "help.webassist.africa/articles/550-relay-not-permitted-error-sending-mail/"
@@WebAssist-Sites Thanks, after waiting for a few more hours and retest the email, no error shows up. Incoming and outgoing email works successfully.
@@ahmadwafi2199 It was most likely propagation that had not completed. Glad it's all working.
actually i need to vise versa of current showing condition mean i want to website hosting locally and mail server should be aother mail server ( clould mail sever third party mail server i have the mx recored of same can you help me for same
Hi Anant Jawalkar, thank you for your question.
That's possible, you'll need to update your MX records with the records for your outside email provider e.g. Google Gsuite.
you should make more detailed video on this.
Thanks Hiren, I'll definitely consider this, and thanks for taking the time to watch the video.
Doesn't the MX record 'Destination' need to be changed to 'mail.demo-account.com' for the Mail to stay local and route through mail.demo-account A record and IP? I tried the setup in the video and mail could not be received locally.
Hi Paul, thank you for your question. The entries are per the instruction. What do you mean could not receive mail locally?
@@WebAssist-Sites when I used the setting in this video the mail was not able to be received. In the video 1:35. you check the MX record at says 'its perfect' having this setting for me did not allow email to be received on that hosting account. To make this work for me I had to change the MX Record Destination to 'mail.demo-account.com'
@@WebAssist-Sites the destination for the MX in this video is pointing to the domain name which will be pointed to the website hosting server not the mail server, hence mail not being receive 'locally' on the set mail server. Hope these two responses make sense, apologies if I added any confusion. When I changed the MX Destination the 'mail.demo-account.com' mail was able to flow to the hosting server again while successfully running the website on the separate server.
@@paulkellahan6807 thanks for the feedback. I'm not quite following you, my apologies, but if you've got it to work, excellent, you understand it perfectly.
@@paulkellahan6807 Thanks. Same case with me.
i only has a domain. i dont have a hosting. can you help me with that
