He's the only JRPG composer who says he's influenced by prog rock who you can hear it in the OST itself and don't have to wait for a live show or rearrange album. Hitoshi Sakamoto who did the music in every Ogre Battle, Ivalice and Valkria Chronicles game claims his biggest influences are "old techno and prog"....I'm like 🙃 With Uematsu you can hear his love of Emmerson Lake and Palmer in a handful of tracks...he goes nuts in bands though.
golden sun (game boy advance and nintendo ds) tales games (symphonia, switch, phantasia game boy advance, abyss 3ds. star ocean for the super nintendo now i have the second story on nintendo switch. sometimes we remix those awesome tracks of yours now we are bizzy with a thoughtfull strategy (valkyrie profile 2) high brow from star ocean 3 is already done. it was a verry hard track we do that in a studio of my girlfriends brother. legendary tracks. the incarnation of devil (switch) is also remixed in this game. so time to go on with it.
@@Chelaxim I can believe Sakimoto when he says that. While his style is really unique for orchestral music and it doesn't really sound particularly prog either, prog does tend to have a lot of classical influence, so I can see the connection. And as for the techno influence, his music for Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire 5 and Gradius 5 definitely show that. With Uematsu I think the ELP influence comes out in FF9. It literally sounds like an album of theirs at times, to the point I wonder if he outright sampled the hammond organ from one of their tracks, or got the exact model and settings for it. I'm not a fan of ELP at all but Uematsu made it work in FF9, though it's definitely not my favourite soundtrack of his. That would be FF8, and 7.
An absolute legend and genius composer. Every time someone wants to talk about the great Japanese composers like Uematsu and Shimamura, Sakuraba absolutely should be mentioned in the same breath.
Sakuraba: "I try to make music that doesn't interfere with the user's gameplay experience as much as possible." Then proceeds to make you headbang with the music in every single battle.
I think Motoi Sakuraba might be my favorite music creator. The entire soundtrack of Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age is one of the most perfect soundtracks ever. I loved every single theme in it.
Agreed. Among my top three game music composers are Motoi Sakuraba, Nobuo Uematsu, and Yasunori Mitsuda. They all put so much passion into their work, thus creating such memorable music. In my opinion, VG soundtracks are better than many movie soundtracks nowadays. Again, just my opinion.
Sakuraba-san is one of my all time favorite composers. Truly a legend, he doesn't get nearly enough credit for the amazing job he does with almost any soundtrack he makes. He just has a knack for capturing the atmosphere of the environment you're in or the battle you're fighting dead to rights. The way he has updated this iconic soundtrack proves that he hasn't lost his edge in the slightest. If anything, he's gained so much experience that he's able to come back and do a proper re-envisioning of things. Truly, all you have to do is listen to "Field of Expel" on this soundtrack, it's total bliss listening to it in its updated form. I also adore what he did with the town themes too. Thank you for uploading this video, Sakuraba-san deserves to be uttered in the same sentence as "legend" or "legendary".
Sakuraba is our RPG prog god. His music helped me widen my interests in other genres of music. I adore his music. Have since I played Star Ocean back in the late '90s. His music just blew my mind. The lush romantic pieces, his driving battle themes, and his eccentric dungeon tracks all have a place in my heart.
Mans music shaped my childhood. Cant explain the funny looks i get when i tell people that the music i play to focus is from a PlayStation game from decades ago lol
The legend!. Been listening to his solo albums too for years like Forest of Glass, After All and Gikyokuonsou. All great stuff with his trademark styles.
i got the game for the ps4 and its a masterpiece of art.everything and all is phenomenal and crisp pure almost realistic 2d and 3d.Motoi Sakuraba your the man and legend GOAT.Thank you Sir.
"I've felt like this (music) is the only thing I'm meant to do" it takes people this degree of passion to truly stand out in their field, which in the case of Sakuraba, was making some of the most banging RPG music and being recognized for it
Goated composer. What a time to be alive where we have so many legendary composers for jrpgs / video games. Each of their music have touched and changed our lives
My favorite composer of all time. Always happy to hear more of his work, especially when he's given freedom to compose the way he wants. Hoping for another live concert soon.
Listening to Missions Into Deep Space in the background realy give me shivers..🥶🥶.., Maaan.., all Star Ocean 2 tracks sure are bonkers.., Nostalgia Hits really hard with me...😢😢😢
Ever since the original Tales of Phantasia, one of my favourite SNES games (and jRPGS in general), I knew Sakuraba-san is a musical genius. If you haven't played the game, just go and listen to "Be Absentminded" for example.
Love to see he still uses devices which have been used since his early career like SO2. 0:26 Digital Performer 0:56 his iconic Korg CX-3 (Original) 1:13 PC-98 running Recomposer
This was the first game I played through on my own as a kid. I loved the story, the music and all the different characters. And now I'm playing the hell out of R.
I'm new to Star Ocean series. I'm a huge FF fan, so I will try this out! Anything to support quality games and stories from Square Enix :) Thanks for the interview! Gonna order on release!
His work in the Tales of series made me love him so much. I think his music is so fundamentally tied to my appreciation of these games that I wouldn't enjoy as much if it was another composer.
Ever since I gotten to get into more JRPGs after Final Fantasy... I realized I gotten to JRPGs that was composed by this Dude😂😂 But No, I always love to listen to Sakuraba's Bangers... despite his Music can Sound the same, but at the same time you'll never get tired of listening to his Art😁🙏❤️🇯🇵
It's hard not to respect the quality of effort. Dedication to ones craft, and mastery are always inspiring. I am looking forward to playing Star Ocean Second Story once more.
THE BEST game music composer, if not best music composer of modern times in my opinion. If I want to talk about popular games music, I'd say FF7 was my most popular, maybe Earthbound (though niche,) Dragon Quest 1. But the one that ALWAYS stood stuck in my head, it's Star Ocean 2, and it's somewhat a niche game in a sense, too!
LOL he says he tries to make music that doesnt interfere with the players gameplay? Some of his songs were so good the gameplay interfered with the music🤣 I remember opening my battle menu so i could enjoy the song uninterrupted
I just got done listening to some of his music. He has Cds called After All, Passage and The Force of Light. He also done tons of video games over the years. Golden Sun Tales of Series and a niche game called End of Eternity.
So Sakuraba's still using Digital Performer as his DAW (likely one of the latest versions), it's been mentioned as his sequencer way back in his 90's albums.
Sakuraba, please comeback to SYNTH STYLE like the Original Star Ocean 2 😢🙏🙏, your music on PS1 Era is simply unmatched, lovely, charming, and absolutely beautiful...😢😢❤❤❤
Old are Gold 😍 Old Generation have more imaginations to create a better song and music 🤩 The new generation of composers are disappointing to say the least 😭
easily top three videos on RUclips this year, but any way to see the transcript in English? I haven't figured it out yet and completely blind, thank you
please let a remaster of Star ocean 3 follow next :D.. we all know, that you know, that want to see this happening finally ..then its done that we can finally play all of the games in a row on 1 platform on PS4/5 früm 1 to 6 - only 3 is now missing and it would be an incredible unfathomable SHAME, if you leave this game out now ....
people dont no cant understand the importence of japanese video game music Im was into classical music before I got into game music so I thought that video game music is the same than I discovered a whole new genre of expression my friend who is a singer and classical musician she doesnt understand that video game music is a diffrent form of expression.
Hey Square Enix, If you like money... release Valkyrie Profile 1 to Xbox family. To be more precise, the ps1 version, release this version to Xbox family - the mobile version have lower quality in comparison to ps1 version. The Valkyrie Profile have the soundtrack composed by Motoi Sakuraba and in this game he created each music track based in feelings like " anger, sadness, revenge, joy" and so on. So without knowing what is going on in the scene, only the main feeling of the whole event, made the soundtrack of VP so unique, deep, strong, heavy and legendary - Domou Arigatou Mister Sakuraba. My wallet is open Square Enix, if you release Valkyrie Profile to Xbox one - like happened before with Octopath 1, Front mission 1, Chrono Cross 🥰 And im waiting for Octopath 2, Front mission 2, Legend of Mana and Valkyrie Profile 1 - make it happen SE 👍
Absolute icon. He's done work for so many legendary RPGs.

Throw Yasunori Mitsuda in the mix...baby you got a musical stew goin!

A LEGEND! I have always looked forward to his work.
Thanks Square for this video. Motoi Sakuraba...the legendary composer!
What a legend! His music has always been amazing, but I've loved his Star Ocean tracks the most. This was really interesting!
My guy Motoi Sakuraba is a legend. The original Second Story OST is one of my all-time favorite JRPG soundtracks. Such character and unique sound.
Mans music shaped my childhood. Cant explain the funny looks i get when i tell people that the music i play to focus is from a PlayStation game from decades ago lol
Thank you! Star Ocean 2 OST is legendary. This man is a master.
The legend!. Been listening to his solo albums too for years like Forest of Glass, After All and Gikyokuonsou. All great stuff with his trademark styles.

The Mozart of JRPG OSTs . 🙏🏻🔥❤️
Thank you for the wonderful interview and the Mission to the Deep Space piano arrangement performance playing throughout!
His music is glorious 💜💯
My favorite composer of all time. Always happy to hear more of his work, especially when he's given freedom to compose the way he wants. Hoping for another live concert soon.

Listening to Missions Into Deep Space in the background realy give me shivers..🥶🥶.., Maaan.., all Star Ocean 2 tracks sure are bonkers.., Nostalgia Hits really hard with me...😢😢😢
He’s made some of the most memorable music of my childhood and continues to do so. Thank you for creating such amazing gems.
Ever since the original Tales of Phantasia, one of my favourite SNES games (and jRPGS in general), I knew Sakuraba-san is a musical genius. If you haven't played the game, just go and listen to "Be Absentminded" for example.
Such an amazing and Inspiring composer. Him and Uematsu are my 2 most influential video game composers

Truly an icon. Solo albums to live performances. The man don’t miss.looking forward to the arrangements in second r.
So much talent goes into this game. It truly is a work of art. I'm so thankful it was made and that the genre is getting better every day.
This video made me so happy!!! I hope we gets a chance to work on that project he mentioned at the end ❤
This was the first game I played through on my own as a kid. I loved the story, the music and all the different characters. And now I'm playing the hell out of R.

We just love Motoi. Its that simple.
Love his music for VP + Golden Sun! :)
The DEITY himself!!
“Incarnation of the Devil” always be my favorite❤
His work in the Tales of series made me love him so much. I think his music is so fundamentally tied to my appreciation of these games that I wouldn't enjoy as much if it was another composer.
Master Sakuraba. thank you.
This was basically the coolest video ever.
Ever since I gotten to get into more JRPGs after Final Fantasy... I realized I gotten to JRPGs that was composed by this Dude😂😂

Well said fr, like I keep listening to his dark souls and tales of music very often
It's hard not to respect the quality of effort. Dedication to ones craft, and mastery are always inspiring. I am looking forward to playing Star Ocean Second Story once more.
His work has always been there for me in my hard times and helped lift me up. I hope he lifts more people up with the power of his music.
The King
Motoi Sakuraba gives Nobuo Uematsu a run for his money

Some of his songs were so good the gameplay interfered with the music🤣

the legend himself god damn.
This guy made the music for dark souls 1 too, as well as some wild jazz fusion albums. He is amazing ❤
I just got done listening to some of his music. He has Cds called After All, Passage and The Force of Light. He also done tons of video games over the years. Golden Sun Tales of Series and a niche game called End of Eternity.
He did golden sun?, I never knew that, Motoi Sakaraba is the truth.
We are in for a treat
I bow to you Motoi Sakuraba, my shepherd in the star ocean
So Sakuraba's still using Digital Performer as his DAW (likely one of the latest versions), it's been mentioned as his sequencer way back in his 90's albums.
Amazing Composer!!!
*Seraphic Gate music intensifies*
Star Ocean 2 music is amazing!
He did plin plin plon
Yes🥹
Sakuraba, please comeback to SYNTH STYLE like the Original Star Ocean 2 😢🙏🙏, your music on PS1 Era is simply unmatched, lovely, charming, and absolutely beautiful...😢😢❤❤❤
A master in videogame musical composing!
I think Sakuraba was inspired by Madonna's La Isla Bonita with Kamikaze from Star Ocean 2! Listen to both songs and you'll hear the similarities!
Plin Plin Plon
Warms my heart to see that the folks that worked on my all time favorite RPG are getting recognized today.
I played the demo version and its out of this world.this game will be sold out like hotcakes fast.
