'Alone' is the ultimate power ballad from Heart, written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly.
American rock band Heart covered it on their 1987 album 'Bad Animals', and this version reached number one in the US and Canada.
Heart is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Seattle, Washington as The Army. Two years later, The Army changed their name to Hocus Pocus, then they changed their name again to White Heart a year later, but eventually changed the name a final time to Heart in 1973. By the mid-1970s, original members Roger Fisher (guitar) and Steve Fossen (bass guitar) had been joined by sisters Ann Wilson (lead vocals and flute) and Nancy Wilson (rhythm guitar, backing and occasional lead vocals), Michael Derosier (drums), and Howard Leese (guitar and keyboards) to form the lineup for the band's initial mid- to late-1970s success period. These core members were included in the band's 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Heart rose to fame with music influenced by hard rock and heavy metal, as well as folk music. The band's popularity declined in the early 1980s, but the band began a successful comeback in 1985 which continued into the mid-1990s. Heart disbanded in 1998, resumed performing in 2002, went on hiatus in 2016, and resumed performing in the summer of 2019. Heart's US Top 40 singles include "Magic Man" (1975), "Crazy on You" (1976), "Barracuda" (1977), "What About Love" (1985), "Never" (1985), and "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" (1990), along with no. 1 hits "These Dreams" (1986) and "Alone" (1987).
"Alone" became Heart's biggest hit. It was their second number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after "These Dreams" and stayed at number one for three weeks. It ranks second in the chart of the year's biggest hits, only behind "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles. The song was also a big hit in Europe, reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart in the United Kingdom.

This unique performance was filmed by TROS tv on May 21, 1987 in the Netherlands.

A couple years ago a took my mom to see Heart, she had no idea until we were physically walking up to the venue. It was such an amazing show. I will never forget it.

Actually Ann and Nancy don't look back too fondly on this era of their career, when they were forced to change their image and perform more radio friendly songs because their label was basically only interested in making money from the band.
I think it's because they're lip synching here. Nancy's vocals begin before she rushes up to the mic. And she moves away from the mic but the tail end of the vocals haven't finished. We all know Ann is the Queen, but people could just be disliking it because it's not live.
The audio here is exactly the same recording used with the music video released at this same time (1987). Compare the official video track released by Arista/BMG to this one and you'll see.
Wow that talent to go from piano the guitar back to piano again without missing a note
I believe this is one of those "pop hits" shows where artists were expected to lip synch and pretend to play along to their original recording as the performance for the show. The give-away is when you hear the piano again before and during the 2nd verse and Nancy is still up front. It was a pretty common practice to do tv performances that way on this kind of show in order to promote the sale of the record.
That said, Heart is obviously one of the great live performing bands, for both vocals and instruments, that doesn't need to pretend to do anything when they are on stage.

But yes, They are fantastic live musicians as well. Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar are the two Best female rock vocalists of all time... IMHO.
Also when Nancy's vocals first came in she didn't quite get to the mic in time. She was still running up when she started "singing."

@Baby Hunn Heart had their most artistic sound in 70s. Their own written stuff. So the band wasn't originally commercial like you believe.
@Baby Hunn Trash or not they need to make money after got rejected by Epic Record for low sales from their Passionworks album. Me and many here won't be fans of Heart if not for their infamous works under Capitol Record. The Beatles also made cringy pop songs to some people ears but still there are many put them in high regard and influenced top bands in 70s and 80s.
@Baby Hunn It was not like what they wanted but they have to do so to stay relevant in the 80s as music changed. They already sounded ancient with their 2 earliest albums in the 80s. Def Leppard changed their music and became successful for doing so. 70s style music didn't age well in new era.

Had the pleasure of seeing Heart many times growing up in Burnaby BC . They were almost the bar band for my youth awesome . I knew they were going to be huge .

I absolutely love HEART. Ann and Nancy have rocked out for years and they are super talented. I usually don't care for bands covering other bands songs but they absolutely blew me away with Zepplin`s Stairway to Heaven, perfect performance.

In my view, this is the greatest of all the power ballads from around that time.
I would have to give the edge to Still loving you by The Scorpions but Alone is definitely a close second.

what a great singer and what a great song.Due to her weight problems CAPITOL suggested ANN not to give interviews even though the band was really popular, this video is a gem, there aren't many around from this era.
Wish they'd done the rare Strangers of the Heart as well, Nancy kills vocally on that one.

중학생 때 하트, 반 헤일런 등 락밴드와 유로 댄스를 좋아하다가 고딩 때 본격적으로 메탈에 빠져 살았다. 50대가 되니 클래식이나 재즈도 좋아하게 됐지만 이런 곡은 여전히 좋다. 음악적 스펙트럼이 넓어지니 장르를 가리지 않고 그냥 내가 듣고 좋아하는 곡이 명곡이라 생각된다.

Notice the super clean stick spin by the drummer before he starts his solo(what a great sounding kit!), both sister's pounding their fists in the air to the beat as a crescendo builds up to be released by Ann's legendary scream..... just absolutely mesmerising and what a live performance is all about, the magic of the moment.
