  • An elderly widower was punched to the ground and killed after he confronted a cyclist for riding his bike on the pavement.
Retired engineer Michael Dawson, 78, motioned for Nathan Pilling to dismount and walk his bike after the younger man rode near him on the sidewalk in Bury, Greater Manchester.
Founder of Cycle Legal Kevin O’Sullivan joins Talk’s Mike Graham to discuss this further.

Please don't tar all cyclists with the same brush. I have third party liability on my bike just incase a pedestrian just walks out in front of me without looking. Don't forget pedestrians walk across cycle lanes without looking. The roads are appalling and dangerous to cycle on, motorist's know the roads are bad and complain so imagine being a cyclist. I don't ride on the pavement as when I first started cycling you couldn't ride on the pavement if your bike wheels were over a certain size. I rarely take my bike on the pavement, only at really dangerous junctions where it is safer to cross the junction by using the pedestrian crossing.

I totally get that, asteve. I've been forced to use my bike now, because of the costs involved for me running a car, so I sold it. But if I'm on a main road, and I see a queue building up behind me, I will always pull over to let the traffic flow. I've been stuck behind inconsiderate cyclists, when driving, and I am convinced they do it on purpose.

Oh fuxk off @verdeboyo you cu_nt, I'm ex plod, if some-one like Mike Graham asked me to validate my allegation of a crime from even 40 years ago I could, I wouldn't be saying "It happens all the time, but I can't tell you of a particular incident or how often, just take my word for it 'cos I said so" This 'solicitor' Kevin O'Sullivan is a lying turd who advocates for and excuses scum and won't take responsibility for the actions of his clients and their wider pier group. For the most part, casual adult use of a cycle (from the shed) could be covered by existing, licence and motor insurance for 3rd party liability.
The fact is @verdeboyo you could be struck by a cycle today, suffer a broken limb (costing £1000K+ paid for by NHS tax payers) or you could suffer dental injuries which could easily rise to £10k for which you would have to pay privately, while the human excrement (same as you) cyclist would ride off unsanctioned.
It would cost very little to have all cycles marked on the frame or behind the saddle with a unique number. The fact is we have a situation in the country where police are happy to issue RTA fines/penalty points to motorist, on the paltry, uncorroborated evidence of their private go pro, in for example minor non-contact infringements such as failing to give way to undertaking cyclists (an offence for any other road user) And YES YOU CU_NT I can give you prosecution of such. But the same Plod would do nothing if a cyclist committed a moving violation or damaged property - unless of course the cycle ran into a police car and damaged it's woke pro LGBT+ logos.

As a spokesperson for the victims family I want to explain that this isn’t really an issue against cyclists.
This was a thug wearing a balaclava on an electric bike tearing through the pedestrian town centre without lights and acting menacing. He startled the victim and then approached him with violence. Sad that the media have gotten this confused… this scum bag isn’t a “cyclist” and this isn’t a fight against general cyclists at all.
Would be happy to have a conversation and shed some light on this case.
The victim was an elderly man and was attacked and killed, his killer got 5.5 years for what’s essentially murder.

I had a friend whose husband started a new job in Hastings, a few years ago. She didn’t drive, and new to the area, decided to cycle along the promenade from where they lived, to Hastings library to join. It was a wild, windy day, not a soul to be seen on the prom. Suddenly an overweight police officer appeared, held,up his hand, and stopped her. Asked “what do you think you’re doing?” She explained she was on her way to the library, and had just moved to the area. He told her she could have knocked down an old lady.
Asked for her name and address, and treated her appallingly. As I said, not a person was around. What a welcome to the town. Her husband had taken a job at the local council too. Now, older, and living on the coast, although a different town, it’s impossible for her to walk along the local promenade because of cyclists, sometimes 2 or 3 abreast. How times change.

I was taught from that early age that it's illegal to cycle on pavements. The problem is that there are not enough police about to enforce the laws regarding cycling on pavements. Vehicle hit and runs are often by people who have no license, no insurance, no MOT and probably on cloned/ false number plates. - In 2022, 91 pedal cyclists were killed in Great Britain, whilst 4,056 were reported to be seriously injured (adjusted) and 11,546 slightly injured (adjusted).

First of all, you're getting e-bikes mixed up. There are two kinds: legal, lightweight mountain bikes that are legal under UK laws with Bosch motors, Shimano, TQ, Pinion, Brose, etc. If the motor is a mid-drive, it'll be legal and lightweight and restricted to 15 mph. These are not like the rear-wheel motor e-bikes alot of youtubers are building these and selling them on to public it has to stop! they can weigh up to 50 kg. I'm an e-biker (eMTB) who spent a lot to have a legal e-bike. I hate these Chinese e-bikes that are being imported with speeds of up to 40 to 70 mph. What the heck? 15 mph is right on the limit of speed you would care about if you're not being a jerk with them! These people are giving real e-bikes a bad name! The e-bikes we ride that are legal are in no way any different from a normal bike on straight roads, etc. They only really help when riding up hills! The effort I need to put in is the same as on my normal bike, and I've never gone past 20 mph on the road when the motor cuts out. So there has to be research into these bikes before judgment is made. It's that simple!

I am a cyclist myself, and I feel appalled by this cyclist behaviour in response to the man. I agree that he should have gotten a longer jail time for killing someone. But there is also a more profound problem here that, if solved by law and by culture, would prevent cyclists to use the sidewalk. I'm referring to the behaviour of drivers of cars that constantly put cyclists at risk of life when riding on roads. I'm not defending that cyclist should use the pavement, I'm saying that cyclists should use the roads but roads NEED TO BE safer for cyclists.

Elderly Man killed by an idiot who happened to be riding a bike - it's not cycling or cyclists at fault here. Also Mike wow chill out and stop over reacting just because of your own bias - shameful treatment of your guest.

This is a horrific outcome, but please do not paint all cyclists with the same brush. Recently I was riding my bike with a friend, in the Netherlands mind you, and a car almost brushed my handlebar in passing (less than an inch away). So I got mad, this guy tried to kill me with his vehicle, and went after him. He ended the "conversation" with you cyclists are the problem!

If every road had a cycle lane people wouldn't be on the pavement - I use both for my own safety - the roads are very congested

In Australia they changed the law to allow cycling on the pavement, as a way to ensure cyclists are safer when navigating dangerous roads. The problem is the lack of safe cycling infrastructure that forces cyclists to use the pavement. Of course this was an outrageous attack, but let's not forget the many more pedestrians and cyclists who are killed by cars.

There are a number of issues covered here, the bits tried to emulate the European concept of cycle lanes ect, brilliant idea which I agree with. The problem is, bits don't behave in the same way, just we tried to have European style street cafes/bars. We have a lot of feral people out there, unfortunately some of them are cyclists. Your film clip showed a road junction with a keep left bollard, just note how many didn't, just so they could access the cycle lane on the opposite carriageway. The councils designated footpaths dual purpose not taking into account the Blind/ partially sighted. If they're training for the tour de France, then they should be on the road.

I have ridden a bike since I was a child in the sixties and we stuck to certain rules - these days there is a certain type of cyclist who thinks they can behave in outrageous ways - so many of them do not adhere to the rules of the road which we did years ago -

I have cycled all my life, commuted in London, if you jump lights you can get hit by those things called cars, i raced in a club,in the eighties, a lot of these people ride bikes but aren't what i would call a cyclist, they are just yobs on bikes, don't tar everyone with the same brush
