As a complete newb when it comes to this machine and coffee brewing in general I can't thank you enough for this video. My tired old eyes could barely read the instructions that came with it.
In terms of water if I use artesian or Icelandic spring, do I still need to soften the water? Is there any kind of water I can use that doesn’t require filtering/softening the water at all?
Hi ODB, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately I do not have total hardness and alkalinity info for the brands you mention. If you can get that information, you do not require filtration if total hardness + alkalinity = 6 degrees or less. If test results are expressed in PPM divide by 17.8 for results in degrees.

Hi MP, The Gaggia Classic Pro has a manual steam wand. Older Classics had an auto frothing wand. There were regional differences in the Classic a few years ago. Classics in EU and other areas outside North America did not have a 3-way solenoid valve in some models.

Hi a, It's normal to hear some odd sounds on initial filling of the machine. I do not think anything has been damaged inside the machine. To be sure the boiler is full you can open the steam valve and press the brew and press the brew and steam switch. Keep them on until you get a solid stream of water from the steam wand.
Hello Nick, thanks for this great explanation, I just a have a couple questions regarding the BWT Bestcup filtration system. The one mentioned in the video is the model M? Correct me if I'm wrong. Second thing was, since I'm located in Europe, does the BWT Bestcup fit onto Gaggia Classic Pro model sold in Europe, or is there a difference. Just so I know before commiting. Hi cs, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's true, you'll want to get a nicer tamper. But if it's plastic turning you off know there's a lot more plastic inside similarly priced Breville machines which also have smaller lightweight portafilters and no heat transfer from grouphead.
It has been splashing indeed from my very firet experiance with the pressurised basket, it'll be nice to know more about the little peace of nut that prevent the splashing

Question for a low to medium volume coffee shop: Instead of investing in a $12,000 three head commercial espresso machine could one use three GCPs side by side by side to substitute and therefore save about $10500?
Hi HC, sounds good on paper but reality is it will not work. You could try but the workflow would drive you crazy. Single boiler machines like the GCP cannot brew and steam simultaneously. That's a big issue!
@@Wholelattelovepage thank you for the informative reply! Hi! I just purchased the Gaggia Classic Pro and I have a question, is it normal if the portafilter doesn't lock n the 6 o'clock position? It's locking a little beyond that position. Thank you!
Hi JCP, Thanks for the question. Yes it is normal for the PF to not lock in to exactly 6. Usually in a new machine it'll be a bit short then get closer as the group gasket breaks in.
Thank-you Rick for your comprehensive step by step instructions. I felt I had digested all the information, and was excited to make my first espresso. I placed my ground coffee into the portafilter using the small commercial basket, and tried to lock it into the Gaggia machine. It would not accept the portafilter. It seems I had too much coffee in the basket. I removed a fair bit of coffee and finally managed to lock it in place...turning the portafilter counterclockwise until the handle was aligned straight (facing me) but it seemed like a lot of torque was needed to lock it in place. There are no indications on this video as to how much coffee should be placed in the basket...no markers or "maximum level" mark. Would you offer some advice on this? Thanks-you Phil Jacques
Hi Philip, Thanks for the comment. When new, the group gasket will be stiff. It breaks in with use so it will become easier to lock-in. For coffee dose amount - Filling the filter basket loosely and level to the rim is about the most you want to use. Tamp the coffee firmly after filling. If after pulling a shot you see an impression of the shower screen in the used coffee puck then you've used to much coffee. Hope that helps!
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for your prompt reply and this tip. I will check the top of the puck for that impression. I was also wondering about weight. I have an accurate electronic scale that would allow me to be precise with the "dose". I was going to check with Gaggia to see if they had an ideal weight for each of the two commercial baskets. One final note: You clearly put a lot of effort into this video. I am so appreciative of you and others who freely offer their expertise to help first time users to navigate through what can often be a complicated process. How can I achieve a slow flow of water? Even if i use Gaggia pressurized filter basket . I do fine grinding and still the water flows fast. I can't get 25 sec, or close to 20 sec. Or i need change spring from 15 bar on 9 bar?
Hi JC, You need to use a finer grind. I've used Classics for years and never changed the spring - it's not needed. Any decent burr grinder made for grinding to espresso fine should be able to choke the machine - meaning no flow/drips from the portafilter spouts because the grind is too fine.
Would this machine work with a 3000 watt modified sine wave inverter? I know it’s rated at 1500 watts but don’t know if it requires are a pure sine wave inverter.
Hi John, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately inverters and sine wave requirements are beyond my level of knowledge. I'd check with the inverter manufacturer on whether it's appropriate for powering this type of equipment.
I have a question, I bought a Gaggia Classic and made a mistake. I accidentally didn't insert a long hose into the water. I didn't notice that hose was clamped between the walls. And after warming up a little, I turned on the water supply, there was a little water at first and then only steam . After I let it cool down and checked again, it seems to work fine. Hi I purchased this machine 2 years ago have only used it once. Because I was frustrated that the decompression duct (or drain pipe as it’s called in the booklet) does not fit into the slot. I got it to hang very loosely & I had to put the tray in first. Then fit the drain pipe & it hung down inside the top left hole on the tray. Which it looks like in the instruction manual & video it shouldn’t do. My husband & I got the machine out today to try again. That piece will not sit in that hole. When I watch your video & others this should be a simple process it’s not. I don’t want to force it. What can I do? Thank you looking forward to hearing from you. I did purchase this from Whole Latte Love. Also can you do a video on using the machine for just iced latte? To make sure I know what I’m doing. My old espresso machine from Starbucks years ago I had to do a step with the frothing wand. I’m so sorry I’m not very technical. I appreciate your time.
Hi Kristie, Sorry for your troubles with the drain pipe. It's likely a very easy fix if you or the husband are just a little bit handy with a wrench. The piece which the pipe slides into is a nut which can be unscrewed from the machine. Inside the nut there's a little rubber o-ring causing friction to hold the pipe in place. If you can't get the pipe in very far and it's kind of loose I suspect the o-ring is turned out of position. If you remove the nut you should be able to see the position of the o-ring. Make sure it's seated properly deep into the nut. You will probably have to remove the top cover of the machine to get access to the other side of the nut to hold in place when removing the external piece and/or hold it in place when reattaching the external nut. Although this video does not show the repair I'm describing it does show how to get the top cover off the machine to gain access to the back of the nut: ruclips.net/video/Ps8QAkhSG44/видео.html For the iced latte here's a video showing how to make one with no milk frothing skill required: ruclips.net/video/TgW9XIJIlCg/видео.html

In the manual it mentions something about what to do if no water comes out and doesn't seem to be a big deal since they provide steps on how to fix it. I wouldn't worry.
Yeah the Encore would work but only with the pressurized filter basket, NOT the real basket. A cheap option for grinders that can go fine enough for espresso are hand grinders. You could probably get a decent hand grinder for around 250$. 1ZPresso would probably get you the best bang for your buck but there's plenty out there that go on sale from time to time.
