- Dropping a board in a jewelry cleaner and calling it "cleaned" is really not okay. We have to spread the word and encourage best practices so that our industry can continue to inspire customer confidence.
This video shows you exactly what we are missing when we fail to desolder the EMI shields and tackle the bottom side of wet iPhone boards. This is a MUST for proper water damage cleaning for anyone charging money for the service.

"Cleaning" a water damaged iPhone without desoldering the shields, is like cleaning a cat litterbox by scrubbing the outside of it. Either way, there is going to be a lot of crap inside when you're done. Here's what you should be doing instead....
+iPad Rehab hey can you show me where you get your tools
+iPad Rehab and when you remove the baseband chip...i have spare chips from china if i do replace it will it change the imei ....
+iPad Rehab hey and will changing the logic board, still do the job
+slim wiz changing the logic board is pretty much the same as buying a new phone
Jessa Jones thanks for replying.....i know ur really busy but lets say a friend of mine has a baseband chip for iphone 5,if i changed the original chip on the motherboard with this new chip..will the phone work ..nd will it have a new imei
Great job - thanks for taking the time to explain how to repair a phone that has water damage!
Most people are idiots. If I'm not arguing why you do not use a jewelry cleaner then you are arguing that you have to remove the shield so the cleaner can at least get to it. There is no hope.
Louis Rossmann maybe we should start a school for this stuff....
Louis Rossmann Its like telling people to back up their data or herding cats. An exercise in futility.
I just tried like 5 different unathorized repair shops. Thei aither do not use ultrasonics at all, or use qutips. Some of them do not "deal with this sort of things". So its not only about end users.
ya know, someone really smart once wrote, "engineers know how to fix iphones, engineers don't want to fix iphones, regular people want to fix iphones, regular people aren't engineers...". Perhaps they aren't idiots, maybe they just aren't engineers.
Highly educational video. Clears up many misconceptions!!
i have watched so many so called iPhone repairers, this lady here is the best . Ipad rehab knows what she is talking about
Struggles taking off EMI shields though 😂
Hello mam, I have two iPhone 5 phones, one of them is water damaged, so I gave it to the local repair guy and he replaced the screen on it with a cheaper lower grade C screen. now the new problem that arose due to this is that the phone heats up and the touch is really bad, so what I did was , i tried to replace the cheap screen on my own with the original screen from the other spare phone I have. However when I put the original screen onto the other phone it doesn't seem to work for some reason :(
All i see on the phone is horizontal black and white lines like an interference pattern when I press the power button. no picture at all . and this is really strange because when I switch back the screens to how it was previously i.e. put the c grade screen into the water damaged phone and original screen into the other phone, every thing works fine. both screens show full colour and picture . I really want to understand what could really be the issue . Can u please help me out with this problem. The touch of the cheap screen is very bad and I want to change it. is there anything I haven't considered here, are screens from other phones not compatible or something?
Awaiting your reply. Is there any way I could contact you personally over mail or something. some pro tips would be really appreciated.
Thank you for a great video.
What is it that you are using to hold the board there Jessa?
Cristie Roberts It is called an Omnivise. I use it all the time, it is just a heavy little round thing. Probably too expensive for what it does.
Hi Jessa. Could I ask u what station is on the top of FR-801 rework station? Thank you.
Hey Thanks for sharing this video. I have a MILDLY water damaged iPhone 6. It's almost as if a drop only touched the LCD connectors b/c the phone works fine (camera and all takes photos, videos etc) except 1) the LCD has lines through it (it was one vertical line now worse after I attempted to clean the connector with 91% alcohol. and 2) the flash (and flashlight) don't work. Other than that, everything functions and the inside of the phone looks great. No rust, corrosion or anything. In fact the water damage sticker is still white on the sim card tray and the top one is slightly pink with a bit of red in some parts.
One video explained that it was just the LCD connectors and that using a toothbrush in alcohol was all that would be needed, but that did nothing. It actually now has more lines :/ Any suggestions? Is there a way I can send you photos of it?
+Rosie Foster lines in the LCD is a screen problem. I wouldn't advise putting money into any water damaged phone, but a new screen would probably solve.
Hi iPad Rrhab, can you tell me wich composition has the BRANSON EC? I#m living in Germany end we do not have thi Producer...Thx an i apreciate your videos. They are great !!!
Hi there, greetings from Brazil. I am a HW engineer who loves to fix things,
sometimes for need other times for fun. Your channel is a place I feel
at home, not only for your successful fixes but for the deep content in
your videos. They're for PROs, that's why I love them. Keep up this
great job. Take care.
great and informative
Hello, I from france with your video I learn a lot thanks. Sorry I don't speak english well, Big Thanks
as far as the webcam video quality, just don't shoot the video towards the window. The light is coming from the window behind the monitor makes the picture darker. Window curtain could solve that issue for you. :-)
This is what I went to wildpcs for but I got the scrubbing bubbles method instead.
hi so i had droped my phone in the water like any regular person i put my phone on rice and after a day i tried turning it on so this is what it does it shows the apple logo like if the phone is turning on but it doest turn on the logo goes away and it doesnt turn on i try turning it on again and it does the same thing you think if i do this what you do on your video will my phone turn back on?
Jose Martinez who knows--sending electricity through a phone that had electrolytes dried on the board isn't good. Sometimes they come back after cleaning with alcohol, sometimes the damage is too extensive and it needs component level repair. You can take it to Apple and get an out of warranty exchange for two-three hundred bucks
You should have someone to take professional video record from you to show what you are doing. thanks.
I did, see my microsoldering video series on iFixit RUclips channel
Hey Jessa, just a quick question:From watching your videos, as well as Louis' videos, I understand that a good, top of the line ultrasonic cleaner is going to work much better than the smaller, cheaper ones.I am going to try my luck at water damage repair, mostly with my own devices as a learning venture rather than offering it as a service to my customers. If I get good results, maybe then I offer a service. However, just starting out, I just cannot allocate many hundreds of dollars on a top of the line cleaner. My question is this: are the smaller, cheaper cleaners still better than nothing? How long did you use the smaller one you show on your bench? Did it improve your success rate, even if not as much as the bigger, better one you have now? Would it be fine to get a cheaper model as I am only just starting out, or would I be better off just keeping my money?
thank for the informations good job
I love your Channel Congratulations At professionalism Besides being Bonita !!
thanks for the encouragement my SE went through the cloths washer.... was still working less touch screen. took it apart and washed it again with rubbin alcol and tooth brush. put it back together, and has touch now... in the toaster oven at warm for 15 min to make sure it is dry. LMAO Thanks again.
Hello there my iPhone 6 plus is typing by itself and opening apps also. The display is not very responsive to touch.Any clue how to fix this issue? Thank you.
You cannot fully stop water damage. You can clean as best you can and fix at component level but once corrosion gets its teeth in its possible further failures may arise in the future, not saying it will but im saying its possible. Once oxidisation starts it can speed up degrading.
Hi great video, i have an iphone 6 that has water damage, everythign
works exept that it doesnt get recognized by the computer it even
charges but like i said it wont get recognized by any computer, do you
happen to know what part needs to be fixed in the logic board, i have
tried with other charging port from other iphone and nothing, thanks in advance
i though it was my phone everytime it sounds the notification JAJAJA
I have a iPhone 6 plus that was water damaged 4 days ago I would like to contact you to see if it can be repaired
Hi Jessa, do you use the CP500HT or the CP500D? On my CP500D, I have a setting for power, which was defaulted at 9. Do you think that'd be fine? I already did one board with great success, but would like to know your input! Thanks!
If you will blow hot current vertical from up it is easyer and you can save the shield to solder it after repairing.
Ipad Rehab, i cleaned Iphoen 6 16GB Water Damage, but when it comes Up, the screen is too low Birhgtness and the touch dosent work anymore.... i let the Phone into the alcoolhol isoprophil for 8 hours and brush it later, and let it dry four some hours, and still Touch dosent work anymore, and the screen comes low birghtness (crazy), some times it comes low, some times it get a high ? What should i do ?
the screen wasent the problem...
Hi Jessa.
What is the price tag on that UltraSonic-cleaner ? 800-1200 ? Have you ever tried to use straight rubbing alcohol for cleaning? Branson seems to be a good brand, but why not use rubbing alcohol? Thanks.
Because it is not a detergent.
I just have called numerous unauthorized services. They called me they do not use ultrasonics cleaners, as they break the logic boards (they use qutips + IPA). This is BS, right? Do they say that "we can't afford a real cleaner" (I am calling from Poland, its still a poor country) or what? Could someone try to get into their minds?
To what extent are ultrasonics noninvasive? The reason I decided not to use qutips was I was afraid I will take some of the board component with my qutip... I would say that qutip are more invasive than ultrasonics.
do you take phones and fix them????? ........... I've taken mine everywhere it has been down since june 14th 2018 in vegas i dropped it in pool please send me in the right direction if you won't take it how can i contact you its pretty rusty inside please respond
yes, go to ipadrehab.com
I use a Sonicare electric toothbrush on my boards after they have been in the ultrasonic bath, iv found using that instead of a regular brush is a lot softer on the board, so you are less likely to knock components off, but it gets the oxidation off really well because of the way the head oscillates at ultrasonic frequencies you don't have to press it very hard at all :) , it cleans your teeth well too lol.
Hi. I recommend putting boards in silica gel in a static bag to really absorb all the moisture that say alcohol (which at least has 1% water for 99% alcohol) and baking can't really get rid of (coz' I would guess like water undeground, some water won't evaporate if it's underneath something and reheating things is taking the life of components molecularly like it would with food when you keep reheating it. God bless. Rev. 21:4
Hi Jessa I was just wandering, as you did a video clip with a lady called Sunday , you advised to always take off the shields or it's not a professional job on water damaged phones when putting them in a ultrasonic cleaner right , as under the shield is still dirty/soiled right , so my question is if the ultra sonic cleaner can't clean under the shield , I take it it won't clean under the ic s ????? Apparently after some research I found out on micro pcb s the frequency needs to start around 130 kHz frequency as the cavitation (bubbles imploding) are too large and will not reach the tight spaces with the 30 - 45 kHz frequencies , I'm a newbie so if you could advise I would be grateful thanks
Hi I just want to see how you change the small capastors on the iPhone board
8:35 Question, what does rust do to diodes? so, just having rust on or around diodes, can fault them? (obviously I don't know squat, but this is a question thats kicking around) I would think that rust on top (surface) wouldn't affect the conductivity. UNLESS its just straight rusted through, in which case a cleaning wouldnt help much, and a complete replacement would be in order.
I think I get it, your just clearing away so you can get a good look at what exactly your looking at...
look up what a diode is---they are pretty rare to find on a circuit board compared to everything else.
OK, great video. Very in depth. Loved it. Ok again. 3 boards done. 1 revived.Q- can I really put it back together without the shields? Should I apply that tape to all the areas the shields were on?Thanks again. Sooooooooo Much. Xxxxx
I just started my business with no experience. Your videos as well as Louis and a few others have given me a crash course and made me successful so far. Even bought a amscope, crest, and small hakko. Cant wait to make enough to buy the right stuff to micro solder. You guys are great! Thanks for the vids!
What can you suggest on my problem. board is water damage. no power but one of the network IC chip is heating up when battery is inserted, the battery pin positive and negative is shorted. I have checked one of the capacitor near the power IC with both side shorted with negative(I have learned that with one of your video). I tried removing it but when i tested the pin on the board still both are shorted with negative ground. any suggestion?
Thank you so much. I have just subscribed to your channel. If you dont mind sharing the Equipment's name and model. Also, what are the courses that you are offering?
You are brilliant! 'm going to repair a water damaged iphone 6 and I see now that I have to take off the shields. Is it possible to remove the shields with a solder iron without using flux? After the repair, is it possible to have the kaptop tape permanently instead of the shields? Thank you for the videos, everyone, lowend to highend technicians are surely enjoying them!
my daughters iphone 6 was dropped in water.... every thing came on after rice but the board has not been cleaned and battery not replaced, the phone does loose charge quickly almost hast to be pluged in to operate,,, every thing works but the volume, no sound from speker or head phones..... what to do and can i send it to you to fix
Hi nice video! Do you know a similar product like "Branson EC Electronics Cleaner" that I can buy in Europe (Germany)?
Thx
AV out on your TV to AV in on your camera.
You can plug you Microscope and or TV directly to the computer you use to upload as well.
USB for micro and HDMI for TV
Wow.. u just wanted to say that you are incredible! You have no idea how much people you are helping from all over the world, im a girl and im 19 and im really into iphones, so this helps me alot!
+serena hekken thank you, best of luck :)
Why did you truned the board to the other side? dont you use the basket? if so isent it enough, shouldn't the ultrasonic waves/liquid do the work on all over the board at the same time?
Sos Mac mostly habit. The last thing I had in there was a set of cymbals from the kid's drum set. brass cymbals plus Underdog the worst pug in the world = serious corrosion. I did notice a performance difference as I put them in first one way, then flipped over. No clue why! I always flip over MacBook boards, so sometimes I do for cell phone boards as well.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner--just saw this! I wound up just getting a new phone, but thank you for the tip. Keep up the great work :)
Do any of you use dielectric cleaner? Is this a viable option for repair professionals.? If not what are the reasons for using an ultrasonic cleaner over or rather than dielectric cleaner. Thanks Frank
good mickie :) but low working distance :/
Wow you explanation and video was a lot better than most of the videos many guys have posted before! The recommendation of removing the shields might be my solution!
Thanks for this and all your other videos.. I worked for Canon repairing copiers for 25 years, had to end my really cushy job when my wife became sick. been self taught repairing phones for about 2 years, but not to the level I'd like to, kinda felt like winging it, terrified I'd damage a clients phone, knowing I can't barely afford to replace the equipment I'm working on if I brake it, but still replacing anything I damaged.. came across yours and Louis videos a few months ago, and you guys have been such an inspiration, good honest ethical people can do well in business.. and the tools you give people are priceless. Thank you so much :)
You are welcome :)
Do you have another one of this video that is more clear picture wise? I cant really distinguish some things your doing?
+Jeffrey Hughes no
Hey Jessa, what is the model number of your crest unit? Awesome videos. I would love to come and join you and Louis in one of you classes. Seeing if I can fit into my schedule. Thanks!
Something like 500 ht
Hi Jessa, what ultrasonic cleaner do you recommend or what do you use? Thanks and you are an inspiration.
Hi Tom, thanks! I use Branson EC as the cleaning agent. The machine is a Crest sweeping frequency ultrasonic cleaner with heat and time functions and a stainless basket. Similar models are made by Branson
I have iPhone 6 plus water damage , I tried to repair it with local shops but no results, is there any way I can send you my phone to u??thanks
Is a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol enough?
wow, amazing (for a leyman like me its sorcery...but more facinating).
How can I send you my iPad 1 to get it fix it fell on water and can't get it to turn on need help getting pictures out the apple simble is on it tries to power on but it does not
Data recovery ranges from $300-$400 depending on turnaround time required.
What temp and power do you guys use on crest? specifically for iphone boards
u2 still on the board draws power or battery on iphone
Could you please share your email with me. I have water damage on the phone and tried to dry it in rice but when i tried to turn it on... no response. When I plugged it into a charger the screen turned on red.
i have over 1,000 pictures on that device and you would be saving my life if you could help me out. Thank you!
+Garrett Cioffi we do a lot of data recovery---send us a quote request at www.mendonipadrehab.com
just submitted one. Get back to me when you can as soon as possible. Thank you for your help!
Very good and thorough training. What microscope would you recommend?
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MRAAR4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005MRAAR4&linkCode=as2&tag=rossmanngroup-20&linkId=8c3b94523f849afcbb9e232f303e4670
so what you are saying is that if you are not willing to pay thousands of dollars then you cant do water damage repair?
I'm not quite sure what you mean here. As a consumer, data recovery after water damage is offered at a reasonable price--currently $200. Replacement of the phone is far less than "thousands of dollars"
As a pro, I'm saying I don't do water damage recovery "for the sake of the phone" at all. It doesn't make sense with a no fix no fee model.
I do think that anyone serious about microsoldering should absolutely invest in $2-3k of equipment, plus training. That is a ridiculously low barrier to entry in a rapidly growing field.
You don't go to the dentist and watch him use a dollar store toothbrush and some baking soda and water to scrub your teeth. He's a pro. You expect quality tools and workmanship. If he offered a "value cleaning" that got most of the plaque off, I'd walk away....
Use Xsplit to screen cap and then you can do whatever you want with it. paid version is worth it imo ive used it before
nice work mam
i have a question please witch microscop do you use i need to buy one i need model number and the marka
really enjoy your videos, thanks
They have also told me that after ultrasonic cleaning the compass goes nuts. Is that true?
if I have an iPhone se and everything is OK but the screen has water damage is there any way to fix it
OMG, why are you not my wife :(
Hello Jesse you have a lot of videos on different problem but I haven't found any videos related iPhone no service?
I have an iPhone 6 Plus water damage somehow I made it work but after an hour later signals dropped only one signal left and now it has no service.
And I can't find any solution for that??
That's because there is no robust solution. The fault is poor connection WITHIN the board at the bb_cpu. You can reball the bb_cpu if you want and it will solve, but it will also recur.
Hi I have a water damage yesterday and now i put it on a ziplock with rice.what should I do next.t after 24 hrs I checked it and still no power or anything on screen when I turn on. I haven't charging it bc they say it will get worse.
+Francis Santos rice does nothing, so get it out of the rice. Do not attempt to power it on and send electricity through a board that has water and corrosion in it---as they all do the instant water hits the board. Take it to a local shop that can open the phone and properly clean the board, including desoldering the shields to address the corrosion that happens under the shields. Then dry the board and put it in a known good housing to see if you have board damage. If it works, put it back in its native housing and see if anything needs to be replaced---screen, battery, charge port etc.
+iPad Rehab okay got it. Thanks for the good advise. Hope their is no damage that much..😄
+iPad Rehab if I'm going to buy a new one can I still be able to recover all my photos etc.thanks
how much is the new ultrasonic cleaner and whats the model no ? where can I get it ? thanx

where i can bay the right liqued is need for this machine or wich is better what you use?
Will this fix restore error 1 ?
dave k possibly. restore error 1 kind of means "uh, something is wrong somewhere on the board" it is very general.
dave k restore error 1 is the baseband ic, replace it and it should be fine
Peter Campbell dave k There are several chips that all contribute to the baseband. Some require flashing from DFU after replacing in order to program. In general error 1 is a pretty broad error, it isn't something that is as simple as replacing one specific chip and that will solve.
I appreciate that, I have come across this 3 times so far and replacing the baseband ic has resolved it everytime so far
How often do you change solution in ultrasonic cleaner? After how many cycles/days?
Whenever it looks like the lazy river after some toddler shit his pants.
Jessa Jones Thank you for fast reply!))
Always the best thorough directions and instructions.
Thank you for the info.
no power on still
plz help
iphone 5s
lol you're a billion times better than Tech MD
where did you buy your cleaner?
great detail never seen a video like this your there best. sincerly paddy
Can you just change the mother bored?
That is the same as buying a new phone
TOP notch! Just love watching you work! Cheers!
You need more than a camera haha
You are by far the best person online on this topic!! Very thorough, very professional, very descriptive. I would love to learn your techniques!! GREAT JOB!! thanks for sharing, Chris H.
Thanks for watching!
I second that!
do you have any site online to send my iphone 6 plus for
you to fix it?
yes
can you share that website with me too?
www.mendonipadrehab.com
can you fix my iphone 6 ? whats the cost
please help
Hi can you tell me where you are based thanks
+jim bethel new York
Hi What temp is the hot air set at please? Thank you
Somewhere between 300-450c depending on the job. This always differs.
iPad Rehab highly recommends the Quick 861DW bit.ly/2xGDTXo for a cheap, affordable, powerful hot air station with an easy interface. It will remove all different types of chips without a problem, unlike weaker stations that can't stay hot enough long enough to do the job.
iPad Rehab
How do you install emi shields back onto iphone 6 i only see uninstalling RUclips videos thanks
Apply little flux and line it back up, reapply same heat used to remove it until you see the solder get wet/shiny. Continue heating for additional 10 seconds then let cool. Should have reattached itself
Great video. Very talented lady keep up the good work
Hi Jessa, what temp do you use your cleaner at. :-)
Gary Oliver I can't speak for her, but I run my company's Crest cleaner at 65c.
Gary Oliver yes--around 60 C, sometimes a little hotter
Rockstar solder mom heaven yeah lol
Very one. Have a start
i have so much important things i need on my phone
Great video! How much would a thorough water damage fix cost anyways?
+Zachery Smith more than the value of the phone in most cases, which is why we only address water damaged phones for data recovery.
you are genius!...
lol
I wish we had somebody this good here in Spokane.
What about soda?
