Great video. Jomox ModBase 09 mk2 is the best kick in Eurorack. Terrible design choices, but sounds unmatched. And it’s analog.

    Excellent Video Concept and Execution
I prefer creating my own drums
    Any Digital Osc = Kick
    Colored Noise = Snare
    White Noise = Hats
but i do enjoy running a drum machine through Modular
Malgorhythm Mk2 is so nasty for this .....

I am using a Michigan Synth SY0.5 for kicks (or MI Plaits alternatively) although I have kept an eye on Mandrake for a while. Space is at a premium in eurorack unfortunately... Your videos are really informative by the way. The one you made on Mimetic Digitalis was an eye opener :) Thank you 🙏

Mandrake is a large unit indeed. I've always been curious about that SY0.5, have never had the chance to try it out in person. How's the kickdrum (I know you can tweak it any way you want but does it have the kick of a 909 or the boom of the 808, etc)?

I believe you could get there :) Adding a bit of EG to the pitch on the attack or extending decay would do it. Though I am not so much after 809/909 :) Could send you some samples if you are interested. This is a sub monster in any case. And yes I really like Mandrake :)@@briesmodular

It doesn't always need to be 808 or 909, just something that cuts through the mix enough. I like something between a 707 and an 909, the 707 is too boxy but the 909 is too oomphy =) @@OlivierSarfati

Thanks for the video - great. I actually really like all the uploads you’ve used the Crater on, seems like it’s always solid and punchy. Interesting to hear your opinion.

Thanks duderonemillion. It sounds very punchy indeed, and I do like how it sounds, it's just a bit weird to mix bc it gets in the way of the bass frequencies of the synths.

An all in one flexible rumble kick fx module would be great. That Andrew Yang module was close.
    Awesome videos dude

Thanks! I haven't played with that fx module, from what I heard from other people getting it on release it was a bit underwhelming. Kickdrum is the one thing I rarely send through an effect, so I really don't know. Some filter style EQ with a waveshaper or wavefolder behind it could be already a very versatile solution. Not all in one though.

@@briesmodular well I mostly use my modular for sound design and sample it to make tracks out of the pieces, often very long pieces. You seem to be more of a preformed with it.
C4rbn is so great for kick processing I bought 2.

I totally agree with you. Mandrake is an absolutely killer kick for Eurorack. I find that it holds up really well in a mix and is capable of being heavily eq'd and compressed after the fact without turning into garbage. I love making my own drums most of the time, but the sound, ergonomics, playability, and cv control make me start patches with the Mandrake more often than not. Malstrom is off to a great start with the Mandrake and the Arkan. Fingers crossed for more cool modules from them.

Yeah it's great. Looking forward to what Malstrom will create next.

do you have tracks/beats on soundcloud to listen to? I´m curious how mandrake sounds mixed. I think it is a very nice basis for the kind of kick i´m looking for.

mandrake is the best kick drum you can get in eurorack right now. no contest.

      @spenzasequenza 8 месяцев назад

@@inf0tr8r ok, let me probably rephrase it a little bit: Mandrake is the Eurorack kick drum with the absolute most amount of sweet spots that fit my kind of music perfectly : ) …Ultra Kick is a whole different beast! But tends to not really fit into my sound
