The link is only when the child has not been born physically and only during the birthing period and postpartum, after that the baby is born separated, both are on their own. Most people do well, about 10-20 percent have complications, but with medical interventions most people survive, without medical interventions they will die especially in poor 3rd world country. But regardless most people do not want to take that small risk or chance, for complications.
