Thanks for covering the game again! We'll do our best effort to improve Cataclismo throughout the Early Access, but we're already super thrilled so many players enjoying it 😍
please make ai smarter
at this point I'd buy it for the sole reason that _at least it's not yet another _*_mother-¥π¢#{&$ card game!_*
_edit:_ ...looks fun too tho don't get me wrong
One of my biggest annoyances is watching an army of 50 archers each simultaneously target and shoot a single enemy unit at a time, so that an enemy of like... 5 units still manages to engage in melee. By now devs should be making units behave smarter distributing their attacks among the enemy units, staggering their fire instead of all shooting so unnaturally synchronously (volleys i guess would be the exception and have a little tighter synchronicity but shouldn't be perfectly so)
There's a really easy solution to this actually. In a single player game there's no need for projectiles to actually be physical objects that have to hit to do damage. So when an archer unit fires, you just instantly calculate the damage against the unit it's shooting at and then the arrow flying is just visual. You can even delay the actual damage display for the player until the arrow hits, but in the background the HP from the unit is already gone in the logic for the units. And you would have an internal order for all of your units so when a bunch of archers are shooting at the same group of units they won't waste arrows on the same target and you get a sort of "natural" spread. You could introduce some fudging to this if you don't want them to be exactly perfect on spreading out their damage but it's really not that hard to accomplish in my opinion.
I wonder if they need to use/implement GOAP to aid with better decision AI decisions.
@@bigdog91paper Nice suggestion! I think somewhat on the edge of making the experience worse if they'd mess up the ballistics, at least I'm a fan of arrows/grenades/etc actually having to account for the enemy's movement rather than have a guaranteed hit the moment the projectile is fired, but should otherwise be very effective if they separate the logic from what we see on screen (which would probably be the biggest challenge in implementing this)
I've come up with 3 more potential solutions:
1. Add a slight variance to the attack speed to each attack of each unit, say between -10% and +10% from the base attack speed, so it still averages to the desired base AS over time. It should reduce some redundancy in shots fired as the target selection would happen at different intervals, but could be improved further by accommodating for different projectile speeds/unit types (archers could have a much higher variance than grenadiers, for example). I think this should be done regardless just to make shooting feel more interesting, since right now it's a bit "too organized". It'd also be very easy and cheap (computing-wise) to implement.
2. Track how much incoming damage an enemy has (i.e. incoming projectiles that haven't hit yet) and if that value exceeds the enemy's current health it becomes an invalid target during target selection. Could be simple (and expensive) or not depending on the game's current logic but would completely eliminate the annoying overshooting a single enemy.
3. Be more generous with the initial pool of potential targets - right now the game seems to have a clear priority target that just happens to be the nearest enemy and everyone shoots at that. It should be pretty easy to extend the target pool to multiple attractive enemies - just the right amount of strict that it doesn't feel too random/generous but also not do what is currently happening - and add some distribution model to it.
I reckon #1 and #3 should work well together. Both to make shooting feel more interesting and reduce a lot of that overshooting the same enemy.
Attack command in some games does that sometimes.
Like in Warcraft 3 if you do attack command on empty ground near enemy, units will start attacking nearest enemies to them randomly and not 1 fixed target.
There's actually a per-unit toggle in this game that sets them to focus on different units or parameters. The tutorial mentions it.
The wall building is insane how intricate and pretty you can make things look
It's not just walls. You want to make stacking structures for shacks and filters and all kinds of stuff. Like a vertical city.
@@TheRealXartaX Dude I never thought about doing this. This just opened a whole lot of room for me lol
Haha! Literally re-watched your older video from a year ago after seeing it on steam, and thought "huh, its on the steam front-page, wonder if Splatt will look at this again". Here we are, thanks for the upload!
this, but saw the steam card and said "i'm sure splat has covered this and I'm hungry so I guess I'll go grab a snack and sit down."
Been waiting on this game, it has such stunning style and seasoned with some Adobo to boot. Some of these levels are genuinely hair pullingly hard, but it is really rewarding to make the most of every inch including vertically. The inclusion of blueprints is perfect. Hats off to this company.
The difficulty curve is great. It doesn't feel like it pigeon holes you into doing the exact perfect build to survive like similar games. It let's you have fun and play how you want to. At least for my limited time with it so far.
the campaign too does a good job easing you in to the game, like one of the stages is strictly building and it gives you a lot of ideas on how foundations work etc.
This is a great game, i played the demo. i only waiting for full release to get it. cool art. cool easy building (that somehow i spend too much time doing it....) i like they are billions and RTS. We are at age where i start to see decent amount of good RTS games return, what is nice.
Here is my advice for all of the rising RTS developers out there, FORGET ABOUT ESPORT. People just want to play fun game, either to build death stack (me) or be efficient. both are valid way to play the game.
The esports either need to die or, spontaneously arise from a game just somehow attaining that status. But yes I agree lol
@@paxluporum4447 *_The esports either need to die_*
E-sports just need to be ignored by videogame companies, like piracy. Just ignore it exists, if it explodes into popularity nice, but don't interact with it beyond the minimum necessary legal work.
Look at how Blizzard shit the bed of it's reputation even more by trying to force esports games, it's like trying to fight piracy, you're just fucking over the average normal player that doesn't care for some stupid tournament stuff except that it took away from the game he's trying to play.
The building stacking reminds me of how construction plays in Timberborn; though faster because support blocks are built immediately.
2:09 maybe this is a me thing but as i got older, i find Story mode to be more fun in RTS, Not saying i am against endless mode because growing up. i used to spend hours playing Stronghold crusader as me and my allies vs the computer custom matches.
Been playing the campaign and so far it's pretty good. The points he gets every night here you get between missions in the campaign, and you can spend them to improve your units, hero or building capabilities.
My favorite thing to do was make maps in Stronghold :D I loved it!
@@thundreturtle Recreating that one stronghold extreme map, where you have the lions on your side but this time for AI.
The voice lines from Stronghold Crusader live in my head rent-free
@@BigQuadsOnCampus WOOD NEEDED. WOOD STOCK ARE TOO LOW. YOUR POPULARITY IS RISING.
We need a series for this, just like the playlist you have for they are billions ❤
I love how you always throw in a random word that I need to look up in the dictionary!
Copastetically: working in excellent order
Great video, as always splat! Keep them coming!
@@chadowen4379 I think the word in question may in fact be _"copacetic"_ (FYI)
_🌈 The More You Know™🌠_
This was a day one buy for me. I've had a lot of fun with it but man is it chunky right now. Unit programming definitely needs to be looked at, as the units will often just ignore commands,
The building works well and isn't too tedious. They did a good job compared to other 3d builders - looking at you castle story. The wall height calculation is kind of annoying when building with advanced pieces, but I'm sure it will be fixed.
The art style is gorgeous and the voice acting is good, which I find refreshing.
Love you splatty. Hope you're doing well.
I recommend giving TerraScape a look. Its the first game by the dev team and the first game released by the company of a german youtuber that recently announced that he would start publishing games.
I haven't seen many outside germany make videos about the game, which is understandable, regional algorithm is a thing and its a cozy casual city builder so it is probably pretty niche, but it is really well polished.
This is giving me 'Myth: The Fallen Lords' vibes, and that's a good thing!
Played the demo and enjoyed it. Bought the early access while watching your vid, another great Splat find.
Building on towers? That gets my jimmy movin’..
@splattercat - just one more voice in the sea, but thank you for doing such a great job demonstrating not only this, but all of the games you demonstrate. Your channel is my guide for all the indie games I try and buy.
Thank you!
It is really weird his new video has comments locked, wonder what happened. . .
I remember watching you when I was a legit kid. I'm 23 now.
Wanted to see your preview (again) before I made a for sure purchase or not on the game.
Try use longer pieces everywhere they are cheaper per block length
This seems like an improved version of castle story.
i just watched your previous video on this yeaterday because it's on sale and i wondered if i should get it, and now today there's a new one.
Lego sure was something special in terms of hands on building BUT I would have to say that I preferred K-Nex...I remember building all Battlezone 2 : Combat Commander vehicles with K-Nex. Good times, better times. I watched you play around with this game last year sometime? I could hear so much better...you could say my ear drums had their own version of Cataclismo but unfortunately not enough resources to rebuild them efficiently lmao
4:59 - "the higher your oxygen production is, the more oxygen it produces" Very true!
"Double thiccy-boy it out." That's a technical term, I assume?
5:21 I had to pause and google "copacetically". Pulling out big words like that in the middle of my relax-time with splattercat videos...
ThankYou SirSplatt
Cataclismo looks really nice ;) !
Kool game... Looks like you can do a tower defense style as well with the game
I love TAB, one of my favorite 'doomed stronghold' games. I don't why it wasn't more successful, the studio is dead. This seems like an interesting take! Wishlisted.
I just got the game and like it. Hope we get different units or enemy selection. Would love to see orcs/trolls. To get that LOTR ich😅
Looks like Age Of darkness too :D
35:25 I think you skipped hard over the wall building tutorial mission Splatter lol, there's whole lego criss-cross bonus/buff system going on with stone that you learn.
Splatt not reading directions or tutorials is set in stone, lol.

BRUH that last minute was so lame XD but thanks for showcasing this game :>
splatt, why did the comment on the latest video get locked? what happened?
This is a great game! Enjoying it!
so, basically is castle story but more to the point and without bugs
It’s crazy u’re not at a Mil subs yet
Legitimately interested
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
This game looks awesome!
The only thing i dislike about the game is that you have to buy unit cap through the point system. I rather want to unlock a building that increases the cap, and that you can unlock better buildings for it that increases more, but the cost of the buildings should be expensive (the same with points for unlocking), and gets higher the more you build that specific building. That way you can't spam it.
@Splattercatgaming hi :)! Did you get from Door407 the access to 1.0 preview build :) ?
Well... Difficulty does not escalate in they are billions either, it just makes the last hord ridiculously big, bigger than all the other hordes together, which is kind of an issue... I remember I could never beat it as it was so ridiculously big I just ran out of soldiers and towers before it ended... IDK if it has changed in the last 3 years though :D
This is definitely a buy for me but I am going to wait until its out of early access because i feel like i would play it and get burnt out before its finished..
Looks cool. I tried, but I just can't get into They Are Billions so I might give this a try.
Castle Story but well programmed.
Sometimes I wonder If I should offer my services as a 3d modeler. Some of these games look like no one ever used a 3d software and just learned on the job.
I want starcraft myth, and warcraft on steam, why do the best games have to get killed off? This game looks nice, very fun to watch.
Dark spore qq
Dude, those archers during the opening look lazy AF. doo doo doo, ho hum, leisurely draw my bow like during practice. No rush, we're not being attacked or anything. LOL
Maybe archers are doomers xD
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, trying to rush archery makes you miss!
excellent!
oh god the They are Billions campaign.......... The Train Track is what got me killed in the first mission as a lone zombie crossed it and infected a power pylon i had setup. You'd think the devs would add a train gate for the campaign but, they didn't
EDIT: I had replies saying there is a train gate but, i have not seen that for the first campaign mission. Am i supposed to use the regular gate for that or do i have to unlock the train gate?
There is a train gate.....
you can put a gate across the track LOL
@@pbsixgun6 is there actually? The first mission i was only allowed to build wood walls
doesn't scratch my itch. Infested Planet was fun and it came out years before They Are Billions or this and has better graphics.
Castle Story revived!
Was just thinking about that!
Does anyone know if you can put a tower or archer on that little mount?
At the end of the video.
The son of Castle Story, much better and with good optimization
Okay I don’t have money for both, either this or Norland?
Norland
lol 😂 literally just wishlisted this ready for payday, let’s see if it stays on that list.
Billions was such a let down - this looks better in every way! Looking forward to picking this up.
😂
Can you get to wave 100?
I challenge you to! : )
The game is 20 bucks and has 3 hours of campaign, yeah i would maybe wait till they finish it im pretty disappointed
Hey, you used a lot of big words that I had to google. But I want you to know that at 14:36, you used the word Paddock incorrectly.
This larinized names make me laugh so much hahaha
My Ocd says don't block the doors please
The Cybertruck is funny. Almost every single one I see has been wrapped (probably because they are rusting/discoloring) and the only one that sorta looks ok is the black wrap. I have seen chrome, yellow, blue , green and standard refrigerator. A "modern" Pontiac Aztec... Ugly day one to its final day. The rear looks like a utility vehicle except its missing a ladder rack and orange cooler with some water in it...They shouldn't have done the stainless steel and just done regular metal with colors. The new Hummer is way more head turning than the Subzerotruck.
🖤
I was kinda hoping this would be closer to Colony Survival, but still looks cool
The creatures resemble the **Whitespikes** from the movie "The tomorrow war".
Must... Not... But another game based n art style
I didn't think I'd ever see Atari 2600 graphics again.
...NGL: Don't miss them.
You should enunciate "Game Map" a little more clearly. :-P lol
okay, I have to say that you not stopping to actually read gets really frustrating. I get it, you get some engagement out of folks like me getting baited into anger over it, but hearing you say "Oh, I guess we don't have doors" after you had sat there on the Stone Pack 2 - whose ONLY items are gates! - is beyond aggravating. It would not kill you to take an extra half a second to actually look at things before making statements, and it greatly harms my ability to enjoy your content.
Have to disagree, sandbox mode without story progression is for me rather boring and pointless, I play Games for the Story told, I can be part of, railroad or the story changing according to my decisions.
the units definitely need hitscan
You were getting 14 lumber without/before you built foundation to get 12...
I can't say I'm a fan of adding a resource as silly as oxygen.
It's probably relevant to the narrative, and it's a smart way of getting the player to think more vertically.
It’s no different from a resource like food. More people=more food/oxygen.
It’s related to the game’s story/setting, essentially an event called the Cataclismo unleashed the mist upon the land causing people who breath it in to mutate into the horrors you fight. The people fled to higher ground with the last city standing above the mist covered land. In order to operate in areas covered by mist your units wear masks and oxygen packs. The oxygen filters are needed in order create clean oxygen for people to use. Even some of the buildings like the barracks or house have its own oxygen tank . Clean oxygen is valuable that it’s possible to trade it for other resources like stone or wood.
love they are billions but... errr... this is not like it.
If the graphics are as good as the game it's a bad one.
Well turning off comments was a tactical error...
why is he yelling
no F this art stile, go back and finish the beepin textures and map bro
Stile? Lol. Nah this looks great.
