accuracy is great. The problems I was having in the video were due in part to shooting about 250rds of hot 10mm and some 44mag prior to doing the test...basically I had a bad flinch. Weather was supposed to be junk the next day so I just decided to do the test.
Never even heard of this cartridge until 5 minutes ago. Energy is on par with .460 rowland from a 5" barrel. Always good to know about higher power rounds like this. Thanks for uploading! Some of those manufacturers' loadings were fantastic, with DoubleTap being the big disappointment.
Very little third party support. Only found one or two places making barrels for $300 something. If you get starline brass and reload you can probably reload it for 10mm price
holding up fine. I think it really helps I use heavier recoil springs. I just set my father in law up with a G21SF - 22lb brass stacker spring/guide rod, and kkm barrel (has full support). Runs great shoots great and doesn't hurt his shoulder - (just had a shoulder replacement)
Really appreciate your well done videos as I'm learning about these powerful pistol cartridges. Just ordered everything I need to mod my Glock 21SF to shoot .45 Super. Also, just subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work.
@Blake 400 Corbon is made from 45acp length cases not 40 super. 40 super is made from rifle cases. also the 400 Corbon use 45super case but there the same length as 45acp
@@anthonysmith3132 There are very few semi-autos that fire .45 win mag. Believe me, I looked. You'll find 2500 dollar guns, and higher, like AMT, Wildey, and the LAR Grizzly, which is a monster-sized 1911-style. That's about it.
@@davidsirmons I'm really looking for another self defense round for some reason. I shoot .40 I'm accurate and comfortable with it but nobody wants to hear about a glock .40 anymore so I just wanted something different. I like all the wildcats. I wanted 9x25 Dillon but I'd probably have to go with 357 sig instead out of a g27. I want something capable of 500+ ft/lbs that's all. Idk if .40 can do that I'm around 483 with the loads I currently have
There is no such thing as a .450 Win Mag btw. There is a .458 Win Mag, but that is a rifle cartridge. The parent case to the .40 Super is the .45 Winchester Magnum, which itself was derived from the .45 caliber NAA Co. round they developed for their Brigadier pistols. (Big bore clones of the 1930s Hi Power 9mm pistols.)
The G20 & G21 frames are identical ..including internals. The slides are different. G21 has a larger breach cut on the breach face, a larger firing pin safety, different extractor ...I've heard of people firing a 10mm barrel out of the G21 slide but the breach face is wider so the 10mm barrel doesn't lock up very well...breach end moves side to side. Yeah you just need a 21 slide & 45 460 rowland barrel and G21 mags. With the G21 mags you probably need the wider 10 coil mag springs.
btw just in case weren't aware but the G21 and G20 frame are identical so all you need (if you have a G20) would be a G21 upper half. But why waste time with 45 when you could just get a 460rowland!!!! lol (G21 upper with 460rowland barrel& brake)
I 'm curious how glocks could handle such powerful rounds. 10mm , 460 rowland and 40 super ? all of the above catridge generates at leat 700 ft/lbs of energy.is there something special about their structure?
''Load X Ammunition" is also a mfgr of .40 Sup. among many other calibers. It must be a good ammo producer if 7 time Bianchi Cup womens champ Vera Koo uses them (in .38 Super Cal.)
I just run a SS guide rod and 22lb ISM (flat spring like glock factory) on all of them. Functions/cycles them all no problem...even weak 45 is no problem. Keeps things simple.
yes. buddy and I are currently working on a solution. But the main problems seem to be with the long slides and not so much the regular slide. I know this sounds strange but right now the best solution on the table for the long slide seems to be a G21 mag with 10mm #2 follower, g20 mag spring, and insert.
Thanks for the information, I really enjoy your videos. I went ahead and purchased a lone wolf 6"barrel for the 40 super and I will be using a 22 lbs spring. Is amazing all you can do with Glock pistols. Thanks
Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to do these tests and share them. Do you have any info about accuracy (vs typical Glock accuracy) and muzzle flash?
well glock sure didn't design the gun around the 460 or 40 super. So those require a heavier recoil spring and a brake on the 460 also some heavy duty springs inside the mags. most 10mm isn't that powerful. But if you use the really powerful stuff the general rule is to upgrade the barrel to something like KKM or bar-sto and a heavier recoil spring.
They really hog out the support on the 45 barrels. I personally wouldn't take a chance with any +p ammo in one not to mention 45 super. Hence why I set my father in law up with a KKM barrel. KKM or barsto seem to be the only ones out there that have a barrel that fits right, feeds right and has the full support.
Right after I buy a corbon conversion barrel and hundreds of brass I learn about this lol dammit. Might skip this and just go 460 rowland eventually -- already doing 45 super
@Blake 9x25 Dillon can go above 2,000 fps. Double Tap offers a 95 grain that goes to 2,000 feet per second, and a 80 grain load that goes 2,120 feet per second. I've seen a loading once that shot the 65 grain bullet almost to 2,400 feet per second, though those were a buddies hand loads.
I got my G21SF with 6.7" Barsto out to the range this past weekend. With the 220gr hardcast, I could not hit a 12" steel plate at 25 yards in several 10 shot strings. Switched to doubletap 200gr, 100% hits. 185gr extreme penetrator handloads, 100% hits. Saw some of my 220gr rounds hit 2 feet high! Did you have any issues like this? I I didnt bemch test it but I am sure the hardcast are shooting very randomly.
40 super shoots a 40 cal bullet so wouldn't work. If you meant 460rowland - you'd need to get the barrel reamed out .06 more I think it is. Pretty sure KKM would do it.
muzzle flash nothing on 40 super. I did a couple of videos on G29 and G19 comparing different barrels like factory kkm storm lake lone wolf. Search through my other vids.
exotic ammo? underwood is hardly exotic, just basically full power. and about the same price as the more common brand names. the spring is $10 give or take so not an issue. the 40 super gives you 10+% higher velocity and 25+% more energy. whats hard to get?
I can't find this conversion barrel for my glock 21. Tried a search at lone wolf, kkm and storm lake. I have a account with then all and got nothing. Any suggestions?
through the same barrel? no. It's a Glock 21 slide - so obviously you could shoot a 45acp barrel, or 45super through a fully supproted 45acp barrel or 460rowland through a 460rowland barrel...which is essentially a fully supported 45acp barrel that is reamed out .06" further. Some guys even shoot 45acp, 45super, and 460rowland out of a 460rowland barrel. Now here is where it gets tricky - kkm used to make a 45-10 conversion barrel. I know if you were willing to wait a while. Bar-sto would make you a conversion barrel and since the frame is the same you'd just need to switch mags. So basically if you wanted to wait and also spend a lot of money. You could get the following conversion barrels for a G21. 45-10mm , 45-9x25, 45-38super, 45-9mm, 45-40sw, 45-357sig. The only co. that would do this stuff is Bar-Sto. Probably a lot easier to just get a 10mm slide and get the conversion barrels for that, which are actually produced. 10mm, 9x25, 9mm, 40sw, 357sig, 38 super. But it could be done with just a 45 slide. Sorry for the long answer. But you got me thinking. lol Or you could just load 10mm to nuclear levels which would be basically where 40super is. Problem with 40 super or it's limiting factor, is that it uses a small pistol primer. Soo from people who have taken the underwood rounds apart, these levels are pretty much max loads. You really can't get 40 super to go any faster. BECAUSE of the small primer. 10mm on the other hand has room to go. - I've heard (and the data is out there) of guys pushing 200gr to 1400-1425fps. Brass is pretty much done in one firing. But guys do it.
Another thought - You could use the 40 super barrel, then get a 45-10mm barrel and shoot 40sw out of that...it would index off the extractor. But it works for practice stuff.
Thanks for the answer on the first sentence. Also thanks for the information on the multiple options and barrel companies I can look into. I have been debating over the last couple of weeks whether I wanted to do my conversion on a G30 subcompact, which I own, or just buy a full size G21 to get the most of these super bullets. I just realized that buying a full size Glock 21 its now cheaper and longer barrel will provide more ballistic benefits, specially for high power calibers, such as 10mm, 460 Rowland and 40 super. Im buying a used Glock 21 G3 for ~$450. Thanks for all the info.
clima for gen3 g21 - i would highly recommend the 22lb wolff spring and wolff non captured guide rod. in short the 20lb has 1 to many coils. and the 24lb the thickness of the wire is to thick. 22lb is ideal. The captured guide rods do not provide as much recoil reduction. Functionality wise - you can shoot 45acp with it to. It'll cycle fine
Ammo Test That seems like a fair trade-off. I don't care much at all for Glocks but if I had one, it would be a Glock 21 hands down. The 40 super is exactly that already. It's a longer cartridge than the standard 45 ACP which makes it longer than the 400 Corbon which is based in size on a 45 ACP necked down. No, the 135 G at 2000 fps would cause extraction and feeding problems. You can only use so much recoil spring. The downside of one that is too strong is that when the gun gets into battery it slams too hard. You may save the frame from recoil but the opposite effect can and will damage it. You can even try for more than 2000 fps but at the cost of a new gun every few shots. Your hands may also be blown to pieces. There is a limit to everything. If you need more speed, shoot a rifle. The 400 Corbon is made of a stronger case, such as the 45 super. The 40 Super is the same size as the 460 Rowland. These two are both longer to prevent chambering them in standard barrels.
