The name of this pattern touches me in a way that makes me remember when I wanted to be a teacher. Since I was 12 I’ve dreamed of being a teacher, but I was stopped by well-meaning nay-sayers so I didn’t pursue it. Then 4 years after college working as a legal secretary, a dear friend told me about a Masters degree program where I could intern as a teacher during the day and attend classes at night. I was already on my own making a good living, but I wasn’t truly happy. It took a year of soul searching and dealing with my inner fear, but I did it!! It took many changes in my current life, but I did it! Now I’ve been teaching Elementary school children for 30 years and counting and I still LOVE it! I will never let fear stop me again. Peace to you and your lovey Tim. 😀❤️👍🏼

Oh this is so beautiful, I have to make it. I struggled with fear for so much of my life. I would say I've faced my fear and became sober a week before my mom passed away from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I was 5 months pregnant and homeless, but I pushed through and fought for my baby girl. I am now 8 years sober, happily married to her father, and have a place to call home :) Thank you for this today :)

This is a beautiful pattern. Very inspiring. My daughter recently asked me to name one thing I had done that was adventurous [which I think is when you show up bravely in spite of fear]. I answered her that my most brave and adventurous act was when I had adopted her as a single mother! She was in an orphanage in India, and I just knew I could give her a good life. But afraid--yes I was! She's now almost 30 and I am thankful each day that she is in my life, and that I did what I did, despite the fears and doubts.

At the age of 18, I stepped away from the shelter of my parents and eloped. I was so young. Now that I am a mother to a 17yo, the fear of that moment hits me now. The man I eloped with became an amazing husband and father. We’re still on this wonderful roller coaster of a life. This is year 29 for us.

I love this idea of crossing fences to reach our dreams. At 52 years old, with my son, daughter-in-law and toddler grandson living with me, I started Ultrasound school. It was terrifying and challenging but with Gods help I succeeded and have a wonderful fulfilling career. Follow your dreams!

Your comments before the video actually made me cry. I’ve been fighting my “fences” for quite a long time. Fear is an awful thing that keeps us from our dreams. Thank you for the encouragement to bust through the barriers that keep us from the lives we could have if we just had more courage to step into the unknown.

A year ago I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I was asked to help in a community kitchen as an assistant, mainly the washing up, but also baking desserts. Here i am 15 months later, coming up to 59yrs young, now kitchen lead, making 2 course meals for 30+ people who may not otherwise get a hot meal. I'm no chef, but it's the most satisfying thing when people tell you they love the meal you made them. In the evenings, I crochet to relax and wind down. I've made many of your patterns, Chandi, they all work up so beautifully. Sending you love and gratitude from England ❤👋🇬🇧

Thank you. The story behind this pattern is amazing. Fences.
I feel that I have overcome so much in my life. I grew up poor, and just a crazy life as a child. Carried that fear through most of my life. Was a young parent and decided I needed to be strong for my son. Many hurdles later, fear was not going to win. Life has won.
I truly find so much inspiration from Expressions. Thank you for being there.

This is beautiful. I love the shades of green. Reflecting back on my life, the first biggest fear/fence I climbed was when I was 18. My parents were of the generation that believed women did not go to college. I had wanted to be a special education teacher for as long as I can remember. I applied to my local college, and when accepted, I worked the whole summer after graduation saving money to go. The difficult part was returning to my parents' home each day for 4 years knowing they didn't approve. I did finally achieve my dream and became a special education teacher. I taught for 35 years and loved every minute. It is one of my favorite accomplishment. 😊

Fences are real inside the mind! I jumped one of my fences when I decided to take the National Boards test for Massage Therapist.. it cost a lot of money and I was afraid of failure. The future of my practice depended on my passing this test. My best friend helped me realize that my "test stress" was unfounded since I've never failed a test before. I still studied hard beforehand and passed easily! Thank goodness for my special friend who is always willing to show me the best in myself!

A beautiful pattern using beautiful yarn. I think hearing the word “it is malignant” “cancer” makes you realize that we have no control over our lives except to take a deep breath, push forward and learn to truly live each day as if it could be your last. Do not wait to hug someone, tell someone you love them. Be happy, love, smile at others, be kind

This is so gorgeous. I'm currently struggling with agoraphobia. Every day is a challenge and it basically makes me feel like a prisoner in my own home. Luckily I have a wonderful therapist who I see every other week through video calls. Recovery is a slow progress and it's so easy for me to get discouraged and want to give up. But I refuse to do that. I was actually able to leave the house with my husband to buy my mother a birthday dinner! She lives an hour away so it was a huge step for me since my comfort was so far away, but I did it and was able to have a great time. It was the first time in a long time where I was actually happy! I'm hoping that I can continue to make these steps so my life doesn't have to feel like it is on pause. Thank you for sharing this lovely wrap!

Such a beautiful pattern and shawl. Your yarns and patterns are always gorgeous. I love the message that comes along with it as well. Thanks for always providing positive thoughts along with the patterns. I've had a lot of fears before. I've suffered from an anxiety disorder since I was 11. I had to be taken out of school for intensive therapy and had to go through lots of exposure therapy. It controlled my life, but I learned to take back the control and not be fearful. It taught me a lot. Now as a teenager, I've learned that fears can be overcome and there's always hope. ❤

You've come up with another very lovely pattern. I can already see making a couple of these for some of the people in my life. I've faced many obstacles/fences over the past 70+ years, the latest being the passing of my soul mate a few years ago. We always loved to see new places and explore together. It took a couple years of just travelling with the kids and seeing family to get used to the idea that I could go on and still see new places to explore and bring his memory with me. I'm still not totally comfortable traveling with only his memories but I'm getting there.

Thank you Chandi. It's a beautiful shawl, I prefer the wider version. Since I remember myself I was afraid of water and riding bicycles without the training wheels on the sides. After getting to know my husband who's a fish in the water, I let him teach me swim. After the children were born and the oldest got her bicycles and learned to ride them without the training wheels I decided it's time and she and my hubby taught me to ride at the age of 40 😅. I fell so many times but it finally clicked. I still don't like water and rarely swim but I love riding with my family. Good luck to all who are facing their fears. Hopefully you'll learn something new about yourself, your strength and what you're capable doing. It's not always the result that matter but the way there...

Thank you for yet another beautiful pattern, love how each one you offer has meaning beyond just making something lovely with yarn. I’ve always believed that fear tends to be something from the mind (unless of course you’re facing a wild tiger or other immediate life threatening situation) so when my heart says one thing and the mind says the opposite, I try to follow my heart. My life has been full of “fear fences”, from small things like speaking up to career, educational and personal big decisions. Yet when I go with my heart, things work out in the best possible way, even when I didn’t think it would in the beginning.

I love this pattern - it’s beautiful and I can’t wait to make it. After my father passed away, I was kind of drifting. I had been considering returning to school to pursue my masters degree in nursing, but by that time I was 40 and terrified to go back to school - I thought I was too old and would fail miserably. My father always encouraged and believed in me so much, though, that I decided to give it a shot for him. Well, I did it, and have moved so far in my career and my confidence. I’m so glad I faced those fears and did it scared. ❤

This is a fabulous pattern and I love the green gradient. In my life we spent 6 years living on a sailboat. When we moved on board I didn't know much about sailing and everything made me nervous. We spent about a year fixing up the boat and when we first set sail we had to go through a narrow opening bridge to leave the safe harbor of our marina. That bridge made us very nervous and we hesitated to take the boat out through it. It stood in the way of the adventures we wanted and so we finally decided to do it and everything went smoothly. I am now a competent and confident sailor and I love the adventures the boat brings. Now whenever we realize fear is holding us back from something we say that it is just the next bridge to get through!

Your reflections on fences really hit a chord with me, it reminded me of the fences we build around us for protection during hard times, especially if that is during childhood, and how we have to learn to work through and past them later… I had to overcome the fears basically inherited from mum, very caring but also very worried all the time, to go out and try do what I wanted to do. I went to live in several cultures and countries as a result, and while it was quite hard sometimes, it was also wonderful and enriching, and I don’t regret choosing that path!

Love this shawl! Those colors are beautiful. Green was my mom’s favorite color. I lost my mom over 29 years ago and still miss her today. I absolutely wish my mom was still with us but crochet keeps me close to her. She taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl. Crochet brings me joy. I just retired last year and wondered if I should have kept working longer as I retired at age 56. Worried that retirement was enough. Have not regretted it once. Especially, having crochet in my life and wonderful RUclips channels that I enjoy. Thank you for all you do!

I absolutely love this pattern! About 5 years ago I needed to make a decision about a procedure to help the pain from the arthritis in my lower back. I was terrified of agreeing to do the procedure! I put it off due to my fear for 2 years. After doing it, I lived for over 18 months with minimal to no pain. I have had this procedure done twice since the first time with the same results. It is only a temporary fix but being pain free is so fantastic! I am so glad that I faced my fears the first time! I just love this shawl and the symbolism it gives. Can’t wait to try it!

We lost my dad during heart surgery when I was 9 and I have two younger siblings so I had to help the family at a very young age. However, mama always said you can do anything anyone else can do. In 2011 I was battling post-partum depression. One thing that helped was to start running. I started with one mile, then built up to running 5K's, a 10K, two half marathons, and the grand finale was a full marathon in 2012. Doing this was less about physical fitness/athleticism and more about staying on top of the depression. Having finished the marathon, a strength was unleashed in me so that I know I can face and conquer any challenge life throws my way. Now, my 16 year old son will be running his first half marathon in a couple of weeks, and I will be there to cheer him on!

Ah, I love this so much -- the design and the idea behind it. And that Wandering Hues colorway? Ah! Gorgeous! I just love those greens.
I was always pretty fearful growing up of just about anything and everything (particularly failure), and when I transferred to an on-campus community college, I was so terrified that, before the first day of classes was even over, I dropped them all and gave up. After a couple weeks of contemplation about my future life and prayer, I decided to face my fears and go back the next semester, promising to never give up on my life again and leaning fully on God to help me through. It was very difficult, and there were times I felt like giving up. But I didn't, and it became easier over time. To make a long and rather winding story short, I now have my PhD and am a researcher building instruments to study the wonders of my Creator's amazing universe.
To anyone reading this and facing a similar sort of fear and desire to give up on life or on going after your dreams, especially if you've been told all your life that you'll never make it or amount to anything, your life is worth you living it -- to the fullest -- and shooting for more than you think you're capable of. If you work with dedication, resilience, and passion -- and most especially if you lean on God's grace -- you'll be amazed at the doors that will be opened to you. And who knows what wonders lie on your path if you'll just take the first step and then the next and the next? So go out there and be a blessing to the world!

This is a lovely pattern with a wonderful thought behind it. Since I was very young, I dreamt of England and when I graduated high school I left my home and went to live in England. I left my home and loved ones, but it was something I felt compelled to do. I didn't let fear of the unknown win. It was the most awesome time of my life.

What a beautiful yarn and pattern, definetly one I would like to try. The store about the shawl is so true about what we do to protect ourselves by building thoses fences to keep ourselves safe.

lovely quotes, pattern and yarns- what a combination! and what a coincidence - i'm watching this video while eating mulberries after decades!!! yummm!!
there were quite a lot of "fears" thru out my life, learning to build a "fence" either to keep the fear out or to protect myself made life all the more easier to live! looking back at those fences still makes me feel that i took the right decisions at the right time, no regrets!! now i can sense that "fear" before it comes close and can either build a "fence" if needed or thwart it! swish, swish!!

What a beautiful sentiment and Inspiration behind this design. It can be scary to step outside what you know and reach for something new. For me this was interviewing for a position I really wanted but wasn’t educated or trained for. I was successful and the last 12 years of my working life were exciting and fulfilling as a result.

I think I am in love😍with this shawl!! I love lattice patterns! “Fences”, a fitting name for spring and summer time too as to keep your little ones safe as they play in the yard. While my kids were growing up, I was afraid for their safety outside in the world. Now the concern is for my grandchildren.❤🧶

Love this! I used to be in an awful marriage, which held me back and kept me miserable. Building up the strength and grit to leave and unwelcome this person in my life was the bravest I have ever been! Except for the fear of being in another relationship, but had I not allowed that to happen I wouldn’t have the most wonderful man in the world for me. Now that I am hospice, I think this shawl will be the one to comfort me and help me walk my final days.

Beautiful gradient on that yarn, such calming shades of green. I think the biggest fear I faced and overcame was finding my mother when I was 15, who I hadnt seen since I was 3. We had 30 years of life together until she sadly passed, and I've often thought how much we would have missed out on if I hadnt found the courage to get on that bus to meet her that day. Love you Mam, and miss you every single day ❤❤

About thirty years ago my parents gave me a sewing machine. I had never done any sewing and was really intimidated, but I just forced myself to learn. I eventually started sewing and selling Renaissance costumes on ebay (etsy wasn't around then) and ended up making a few costumes for two guys in an off-Broadway production. My name was on the playbill as one of the costume designers! You never know where your dreams will take you! This design is so pretty! I love the simplicity of it.

I very recently faced my fears and followed my dreams when I went on my first solo trip. I went to Hawaii entirely alone, and spent over a week adventuring by myself. I've always wanted to travel, but haven't been able to make it work until now. I've been back for less than a week. It was an incredible experience.

What a beautiful shawl for Summer. I faced my fears when I went to college in my 30's. I also learned to drive at 33 yrs. old in order to go to college. This was a big deal to me, because I am an introvert, pretty shy and had an extreme fear of driving.

My fear was i couldn't read or write or anything and didnt think i could ever be normal again, I aways love to dance, when i left school i started to go to college to learn English and spelling it was hard but got there but i cant hold full information but im here and can do some things good but the best of all i tought myself how to crochet and i couldn't read patterns. I am 53 now and still learning to read patterns and watching videos and seeing what the patterns was and the means of them which helps me alot to have to making something so beautiful for other people i love making for and still love to dance. So beautiful.
I have many fears, and cannot say I faced them well. I overcame them, but I wouldn't call that facing them. I guess being left off at college, hundreds of miles away from home, may have come close. As I watched my mom drive away, I squared my shoulders and turned firmly away to walk back to my dorm, keeping all that fear away for awhile, which was the same advice I gave to my eldest as WE drove away. Go find your place to be with courage.

Thank you for all the great inspiration for an artistic way of expressing ourselves. I walked away from my toxic and abusive marriage of twelves years. It was hard and scary but gradually it became easier. It has been ten years now and I do still have some struggles but I am 100% happier in life. I am rediscovering who I am and I kind of like her!! If I can inspire just one person with my story, please know that whatever the other person is saying to you to keep you under their control...it's all lies to cover up their own issues. You are beautiful! You are smart! You are talented! You are lovable! You are strong and capable!

Hello my little parakeet, Tim & all your flock. First off, I've read as many comments as I could & hit the 'Like' button. So many touching stories as well as inspirational. If I start with my stories, I will not finish it for many days. Fences. My father always made the fence and wall, the most beautiful vision for everyone who passed by. He had plants that flowered profusely in myriads of bright colors, with scents carried on the breeze. People just stopped to gaze & talk to my father. He wanted company. He couldn't live without it. I am the same way. I'm in a lonely place but I'm also in good spirits because every day I see or hear of kind words and actions. There are homeless people in LA, even in upscale communities. I was able to provide a week's worth of fluids for one person who I would see every day under the overpass. She is not there since last week, although all her precious belongings are still there, covered with a blanket. She was sleeping on the ground on a comforter, until someone gave her a tent. She seemed to be ill. Now I wonder whether she's in a hospital & worry whether she is alright. This is a fear that I have to overcome. I've done volunteer work, for several decades, including at a battered women's shelter, on the side, besides my full time job. My mind & heart is always touched as do all the profound quotes in your emails Chandi. I'm all tangled up in yarn just looking at Fences. 🌹🌺💖

I faced my fears when I lost my parents. My dad first, and years later, my mom. It was hard to realize that everything was going to be okay, but it is.
After my dad passed, I helped my mom as much as possible, even though she was an hour away. I went down almost every Saturday. It got hard, trying to raise my family, at the same time…but it helped me grieve my dad.
After she passed away, 5 years ago, I hated Saturdays. I dreaded them and they were something I got through. She knew I would do this and we talked often about how lonely Saturdays would be “someday”.
But now, I find that I fill those moments to honor her, and I don’t dread them like I used to.

I had a biblical reason to divorce my husband, he was cheating on me. I chose, in that season of my life, to learn to be brave. I divorced him, becoming a completely single Mom. My son was 3 and right after the divorce, my ex-husband moved out of state and completely out of our lives, physically and financially. I was already working, and I had wonderful faith based childcare for my son. We had wonderful friends and neighbors. My son and I survived and thrived. My son is now 31. I am proud of the man he is today. Many thanks for this beautiful and inspiring shawl, Chandi. To everyone who read this, thank you for listening.

Growing up, I was taught to fear. Over time, I would meet people, sometimes a complete stranger, who would teach me to trust. Subsequent years of therapy have helped me to have a half decent life. But I don't know where I'd be without all those people's kindness and generosity of spirit. There are angels everywhere.

I remember the fear I felt before playing my violin at a grade school assembly, as I had kept my music pursuits separate from my school life, before this! I was used to performing at recitals, but didn't know what to expect in this new setting. I got through it by concentrating on the music, instead of worrying about people's reactions, and it all went well!

What a beautiful shawl and what a beautiful concept. My biggest fence is what if…. What if I can’t do it, what if I don’t like it, what if it takes more than I want to give to get a particular result, what if I fail…. The real failure would be to never have tried and to have never opened the gate to get to the other side of the fence. Thank you for your inspiration 💐

What a beautiful wrap. Love the fencing and the vines.
I had a bad episode a few years ago where I couldn't step out of our bedroom for over 18 months and a further seven months to leave the house.
I mean I didn't leave our bedroom to go to the bathroom. I used a commode and my amazing husband helped me have sponge baths. I have no idea what caused it and I really hope I never go through it again.
Crocheting and knitting are my safe spaces and help me through tough mental times.
Congratulations to the designer of this stunning creation. xxJane 🐑🌼

It's been about 15 years since I played violin in front of anyone. And then I was asked to accompany the junior choir. The kids were so excited after we practised the first time, they loved how it sounded. I still ended up being so nervous when we performed it for everyone that I was literally shaking. But sometimes you have to pretend you have confidence, lol.

that shawl is definitely perfect for a summer night in the NC mountains! Fear can be such a killer of dreams! It's a constant war with me, from big things to little. One of the most impactful times was when I decided at 16 to move with my parents to Brazil. We left everything behind. Way before internet and cell phones, so we had no communication with family and friends. But in the end, not giving in to fear led me to my adopted brother, my husband and therefore my three children! Fear may be scary, but to jump over that fence is worth it!

Ahhh this is a beautiful airy fairy pattern, perfect for summer like we are experiencing here. Definitely faced my fears during my second pregnancy. Going beyond all the fear based advice to cut me ope just because my baby was breech presenting. Well, I cried, I researched, I read more than I have ever done and in the end, freebirthed my sweet baby (who is now almost 8) in a calm and sweet candel-lit environment at home. It was an experience I will never forget and taught me SO much about fear, beliefs and about my Self.
