Still didn't explain the real explanation for the huge price difference. A couple extra days in the month doesn't double up your bill. And it hasn't really been any colder this year than any previous. In fact it seems to have been a mild winter so far.
The back up heat strips are electric heating coils! Very expense way to heat your home! When temp dip so low, heat pumps can't pull heat from the air, so the auxiliary or back up coils provide the heat! Most customers don't know any thing is different, because they still have heat, very expensive heat! If the heat pump get low on refrigerant or the condenser unit stops working, same thing, running on auxiliary until repairs are made! Everyone wants to blame the power company for equipment malfunctions, or colder weather! Get you heat pump checked!
