I love this song and video /precisely/' because it makes people uncomfortable. If it was just the song, and not the video with its queer leanings, people love it. The message is clear. "You didn't like me, you made fun of me, you /hated/ me. Well guess what? I'm going to keep rising, I'm going to keep making you mad." I love it because he is just purely himself, and isn't hiding. He shouldn't have to hide.
Also, in the shower scene which makes so many people go WHAT?? the dancers are wearing what's called 'dance belt'. They're not naked. It's a fantastic, and fun bit of trickery.

James, I’m not usually too much of a rap fan but one of my friends introduced me to Lil Nas X music. I really liked it.
It just reinforces your views that you shouldn’t pigeonhole your musical tastes. Always be open to liking new things.
And I’m glad you picked up on the fact that much of the imagery is what we regularly see, but involving women rather than men.
With the little I know, I believe that Lil Nas X came out as capital "G" gay as a sort of symbolism to show that he's tired of hiding it and feeling shamed and fear about it. It's like 'I know you are all going to judge me anyway, so why don't I come out in the most flamboyant and aggressive way possible?'. Then there is no misunderstanding that he has broken free from the restrictions he's felt in the past.
