GuitarGuitar Edinburgh kindly let me borrow a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212.... So I decide to blast it full volume in a sound proof rehearsal room. The amp can be had (second hand) for £575, but be quick...! It must be version 1 or 2, as it comes with Eminence speakers, not the Celestions from versions 3 & 4. Great amp, I even liked the Drive channel, against public opinion. Very heavy amp though!

That's the best review I have heard and seen yet if the deville. Basically a mesa MK 2 loved the Santana. And everything else thank you so much. I bought one today
Ah, thank you so much Shane! Delighted you enjoyed it, and I hope you enjoy your new DeVille 👍
Tasty playing Paul 👍
Subscribed.
I'm a blues guitarist too. I bought a Fender hot rod deville 4x10 60 watt version 2 I think for £300 last week. Always had hot rods as they're solid good Fender clean channel which is great pedal platform.
My other amp is a 1973 Bassman Silverface in a custom made 1x12 enclosure with a Jensen alnico .
But I've bought a volume attenuator box which goes in fx loop of hot rods. Then that becomes your main master volume for the amp. Then you put clean channel volume to 5 and half and bring in main volume on the box in the fx loop and hey presto you have wicked blues on the edge of break up.
It's only pre amp break up not the power valves but still is that sweet break up blues tone. Which is where it's at for me too. Clean channel break up is the best. 👍
I like what you’re saying Danny, sounds like we like similar guitar tones. I’m intrigued by the attenuator in the loop of your Hot Rod.... good idea. Anyway, thanks for watching and subscribing, appreciated 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Totally man. Brian Warmpler himself in this video shows the attenuator box in loop.
10 minutes 15 seconds onwards. 👍

I’ve got that same master volume setup on my DeVille 410. It’s made a world of difference as far as controlling the volume is concerned. I paid $35 Canadian for it on ETSY, but you Brits will pay less as it is made in the UK. It’s an affordable alternative to more pricey attenuator/power soak devices.
@@aitken1965 Nice. I don't even have a hot rod amp now. I sold it and now have a EHX Mig 50 head and a Victory vertical 2x12 to run it through. 👍
Still have my 1973 Bassman Silverface 1x12 combo though. That's never leaving me.
wonderful performance and very nice tone!! sounds really great! thanks for sharing my friend!
Thank you Tak 👍
Hahah nice. Love the video. Nice amp indeed. And lovely interview.
Thanks Robert! Yes, and I’m really enjoying that DeVille more than I thought I would.... Now if only I had some spare cash! Thanks for watching Robert 👍
Great stuff man.. love my HRD.. rare is the occasion I get to turn it up like that where I can literally hear the wood grain speak.. beautiful.
Thanks William, cheers for watching. Yeah, that HRD was only on loan.... but I gotta admit, I’d like to have kept it.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 How's it going! I've been watching all of your videos over the years. I've decided to FINALLY after 9 years if playing, go to tube amps. They really are WAY better than solid state in EVERY way! I'm gonna buy a fender hot rod deluxe and I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!
@@JeremyMcCant Hi Jeremy! Yes, I remember you - you bought a 2x12 Katana in 2017. Well I’m delighted you’re still watching my silly wee videos 🤣. And yes, there’s just something delicious in the way a tube amp responds. Happy jammin’ Jeremy, enjoy whatever new amp you end up getting 🤘
@@paulstaffordcook8799 No problem! I love your playing and feel, tone, touch and everything else! I can't wait to get out of this rut with this new inspiring gear!
I luv my HRDeluxe and/but I've yet to crank it to the point where the
wood grain speaks or with me MIM 1999 the particle board spits, but
with the Eminence 12" all broken in (?) Oh yes (!)
Gorgeous tones, and very tasteful playing.
Thank you Canadian Gear-Head 👍
Your playing and that amp sounded great, but that interview was top of the line stuff. Thank you Mr. Paul and the Captain.
Yes the captain was great!
Thank you James. Yes, the Captain stole the show 🤣. Cheers for watching.
Pity its distorting the iphones mike. The bass sounds like its through a fuzz pedal. Still liking the Katana sound better. Just got my 100w 2x12 the other day ;0)
Delighted you got your Katana! I hope you have many happy hours on it. Whilst I’ve never used Tone Studio, everyone else says it’s fantastic with endless possibilities. As regards the DeVille in this clip..... actually, the bass sounding like fuzz was actually how it sounded in the room, and was due to me deliberately setting the amp’s Bass way higher than its’ Treble / Middle. This was in an attempt to darken the amp’s sound. And I actually love that sound, where it sounds like the speakers are crapping out when hitting the wound strings. But hey, it’s all just personal preference. Cheers for watching 👍
The facial expressions are worth it.
Love the humour 🤣
Thanks Ross. I think Captain Jack stole the show 😀
This is my gigging amp, with pedals of chioce.love it! It'll make you honest! 😎
I like that - “it’ll make you honest”. Love it. Heavy amp mind you, but I really liked it. Cheers for watching my vid 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I found one online, was told it needs to be biased, selling deville iii 1x12 for $450, is it worth spending since it needs service?
Hey I’m pretty sure I saw that exact amp in Edinburgh guitar guitar , I was in there in July too haha.
I also have one of those, but only use the clean channel and never had the volume above 4 haha and that’s with the band
Yes, I bet it was the same one! I definitely liked it more than I thought I would. But you’re right, SO loud!
Hi Paul, I used to gig a hot rod DeVille. Used it for my LOUD gigs!! Now use a Katana Artist instead. Nice tone as always ..🎸👍
Thanks Joe. Yes, the DeVille is really heavy, as I’m sure you know. I think you’ve made the right choice, especially for the sake of your back 😂. If I do ever gig again, I think it’ll be the Katana!
trate tiene Bro Whats Is your settings crank The amp un clean channel please , volumen ,basa ,trebble AND mid
?
Badd treble and mids
Great channel !
Thank you Midnight Raiin! Cheers 👍
Lived the Jeff Beck
Great stuff. What backing tracks are you using.
Hi Kyle, cheers. These backing tracks (all on RUclips) were in order of appearance:
Cause we’ve ended as lovers (JusticeMusician)
The thrill is gone (MaxMarkony)
Slow blues in C Joe Bonamassa style (The Blues Barn)
Europa (SMZ Guitar)
The Messiah Will Come Again (I cannot find the version I used but others are available)
Cheers Kyle
More reverb maybe a little delay to bring out the best tone. To dry for my taste but great playing.
Thanks Mark, glad you liked the playing.
Ahahahahha...great interview, Paul!!! But before that...it's always a pleasure to listen to you. However, in my opinion, you're not a "Fender amp" guy, if you know what I mean...:)
Thank you Luís! Yes, I think Captain Jack Sparrow stole the show 🤣. Yes, I’m not entirely sure what kind of amp I love the most.... I KNOW I love the Marshall Astoria.... and my love for the Katana is obvious.... but I could have played that DeVille all day and never tired of it. And then there’s my NEW amp, which will be revealed hopefully within the next week or two... I want to live with that amp for a few months and see how that feels. I’m also intrigued by Supro amps..... So I guess I must be on “sonic journey of discovery”, ha ha, but it’s all great fun :-). (Except for my bank balance of course). Thanks for watching Luís
Actually real Pirates play Squiers.
Yes, I should have a wee disclaimer.... Paul Cook really DOES like Squiers, Epiphones, Harley Benton’s..... Cheers for watching 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Of course.....who doesn't!
I laughed Paul. Loved the "interview." Knowing that you like Squiers, have you tried the CV thinline? I absolutely love mine actually. Possibly play it more than my Fender Deluxe.
Loved it with the Tele, not great at all with the gibson
Thank you Scamp. It’s been a while since I watched this vid, so I watched it this morning. It might be my own preference for bassy, darker tones, so I’d probably had the amp’s EQ set towards that side of the spectrum.... Anyway, cheers for watching 😀
Paul, I think you probably would have found it less painful if you hadn't sat directly in front of the speaker. You should have sat to the side....and In another room, in another building.
Yes, when I watch it back, it does seem silly to sit directly “in the beam”! Lesson learned, ha ha. Cheers for watching 😀
Just use a volume pedal in the loop and cranck that amp.
Good advice actually, very old school. I like !
faces should be consquences, not causes
can never hear you talking.
Nice amp, but Johnnie Depp steals the show!😜☠🇧🇷
Good old johny
