This is a weird one. I feel like there’s not enough context to say how we’re meant to interpret their actions. It could be a Death Note or AOT situation. Where it’s meant to be a commentary on human nature (maybe the consumption of meat). If we’re meant to agree with the MC’s then the series is at best wildly tone deaf and at worst a cringy xenophobic self insert for the manga writer.

I think the only reason this manga is so high up on ranking is the same as how Velma was the most streamed original series on Max. It’s either people checking out if it’s as bad as it is or people just doing it for memes. or just hate reading it it is incredibly likely

0:36 saying one punch man is currently bad in the manga is actually a nuts take. Is it frustratingly infrequent? Yes. Is it hard to know when new chapters release? Also yes. But when the chapters do come out they are phenomenal.
I'm just expecting Death Note 2.0 at this point. The new character seems to be another L style detective, but like, the mc's are bumbling idiots and clearly out of their depth. So, instead of evading the detective through geniusly crafted master plans, they're going to do it through sheer dumb luck. I feel like if the author didn't want us to sympathize with the aliens, he wouldn't have drawn the missing posters of the five young aliens that were brutalized. It shows that they have families and people who care about them. I don't get the sense that mc's actions are being glorified, if anything, it feels like a horrorific tragedy unfolding before our eyes. This might end up being an anti racism manga. Showing a cautionary tale of where those xenophobic and racist sentiments can ultimately lead. All the drama surrounding this manga can also be an argument for why media literacy is important. If we can't explore and criticize these sentiments in fiction, then how the hell else are we supposed to reconcile with them? Or even understand them? I will only drop this manga if the killing of aliens is somehow glorified or justified in some way that makes you want to root for the mc's. So far, I don't see that. If the author is employing horror manga style shading during a murder scene, it's not meant to be taken as a good thing, imo.
Yeah, the glorification of killing is what made me drop overlord after the lizardmen arc. Like we got to love these characters just for them to die, 2 get revived and what was the point. Right? Like if we glorify killing and especially of the killing of minorities it’s horrible. But seeing through the veil of racism and seeing it as a cautionary tale is a great way of looking at it, and might be true. We also have to look at the people jumping to conclusions, and then people jumping to conclusions about people jumping to conclusions it snowballs into a problem.

Just read the first chapter of Drama Queen and I definitely like it? Like obviously these characters aren't meant to be glorified or celebrated but I like how human they feel, flaws and all. I feel like stories like this and Mujina: Into The Deep that deal with polarizing topics like racism and immigration within our society but in a fictitious way are necessary. I want to see where this goes, let them cook!

On a lighter note, you know what new manga I've been enjoying? Ichi the Witch Sure it follows the formula of "Person who doesn't fit into the power system gets power" but Ichi's simple world view has been making me enjoy the story. And Descarras and other witches are great supporting cast.

The Streisand effect. When you go out of your way to "deplatform" and censor, it attracts more attention. And when you force creatives to coincide with a particular messaging to be "accepted" and to get rid of hate, you create more resentment and frustration. One can argue it's better to stand up against racism and xenophobia but not at the cost of castrating human expression. There is a difference between being racist and writing a racist story.
I disagree with it being left wing, right wing, that's putting Westernization on everything Japan has had a really hard time accepting foreigners to the point where even if you marry in you aren't considered Japanese, neither are your kids from what I've been told. This manga just feels like a heavy representation of what happens when Japan actually starts accepting foreigners. I think looking this much into something that doesn't directly involve the Western civilization and politics is ridiculous and only happening because of the recent presidential election. One the lines associated with it is that Hate Destroys the the world, so not only is it SUPER intentional, I would say it’s clear that the author is trying to villainize what’s being depicted. Which means, quite frankly, I’m interested to see where they are going with this.

ok so half of these arguments are "if you look at it from this direction then..." I feel like that argument is kind of too much of an umbrella argument don't you? Like take any anime with a monster race of intelligent beings (like AOT, Dandadan, Bleach, and even something like hunterxhunter) and you can make similar arguments right? In hunterxhunter a foreign race comes from a far off land and make a settlement that is under threat now from the settlers who don't like the minority group taking their land. later on the king of these minorities decides on peace but a white old man stuck in his ways kills him and dooms his whole race to be disposed of. That is the chimera ant arc summarized in the same language. I mean no disrespect to people who think it is bad but how is this any different from serial killer manga? It is just a different species being murdered. I think that maybe we should give it time to cook as the idea is cool and I want to see where it goes. try to remember that non-murders make murder stories and non-racists make racist characters as well. They dont have more rights stop acting like a victim. They pay taxes just like you and dont benefit from social security, while risking being deported. Yes there are cases of bad ones, but youll find that in any demographic and its statiatically shown that immigrants, illegal or otherwise, commit less crime per capita and as a pure number.
This somehow feels like a metaphor of the distain that some Japanese people have for foreigners Is the author simply utilizing the MC as satire way of showing the ridiculous hate that some foreigners get by natives , or is this the authors way of simply showing their own personal distain…? I don’t know about Kagura Bachi, but let me just say this: Kaiju No. 8 is not cooking anything. That’s got to be one of the worst things Shonen Jump has put out in the last decade, and I’m dead serious. I’ve read about 70 chapters, so I know what I’m talking about. From an educational standpoint, please enlighten me-what exactly do you enjoy about it? Because I don’t get the hype at all. The anime was decent at best for its first 12 episodes, but the amount of glaze it gets from NPCs is insane. I genuinely can’t find a single redeeming quality in that entire manga.
I really can’t get behind people jumping to conclusions and attacking this series for being racist or hateful. Cause there just isn’t anything concrete that shows the author or team working on this series holds any type of view. It’s a new series about aliens kinda assimilating into earth and The main characters don’t like aliens for a few reason and view it as an invasion of sorts. It’s not exactly a one in a million story, there are countless stories about aliens and invasions and conflict. Tbh with what is available right now I feel all that can be said is that it released at an unfortunate time. Manga aren’t made over night and this series just happened to start publication when the series can lousily parallel irl situations. Maybe that was intentional on the authors part maybe it’s just an unfortunate coincidence but blatantly saying it’s racist without any real evidence is just not right. As nick said, there only two chapters and everything is just people’s interpretations rn. So maybe it’s racist or maybe it’s just a very unfortunate edge lord story.

Plus, there isn't a universal way to decide which opinions are valid, so trying to simplify people down to right and wrong just seems tyrannical. So if Drama Queen does turn out to just be racist, then I'm able to just ignore it instead of ruining someone's livelihood for the sake of my feelings.

I don't think that is clear that the Manga is racist just by that. Like, the protagonist are racist. But it dosn't really states that the protagonist are right. They could be bad people. Nobody watch Dexter or Death Note and thinks "Oh this show is promoting murder and justifying being a killer." You know, or at least you *should* know, that the protagonist is not a good person. This Manga dosn't really speaks to me as trying to convince the reader than the aliens truly deserve to die. I don't know, I have to see where the story is pointing at, and if it really is a hate on Immigrants propaganda, or if is just adressing a quite real and not much talked problematic in Japan with their perception towards foreigners. So far to me it feels like saying "Schindler's List is incredible racist, it has Nazis on it".

Story is simple, aliens do a non violent invasion of earth, and are treating the earthlings like lesser lifeforms without any justice. So the protagonists want to get rid of these invaders.

I’ve been here before. For whatever reason, you find yourself reading something “interesting“, only to regret it. You think about never having anything to do with it ever again, but is it your reasoning that it might actually do something “interesting” with the aspects and concepts you didn’t like, or is it a stubbornness to stop now that you’ve come so far? It helps a lot more when you don’t have to wait and see where the story is headed and where it’s true nature lies.
Considering media literacy is dead. If this series is just 95% depictions of hate crimes, then at the last minute, try to flip it. Most people will just ignore it and opt for the 95% being in the right. Two questions for those in the comments that are more versed in life in Japan. Nomamoto’s paycheck of 100,810 yen, how much is that compared to the cost of living? Sub question, would that paycheck be for a week, two weeks, or a month? It doesn’t say in the manga, but what is common for Japan’s workforce? Mainly I want to know for better context. The note said the pay was roughly equivalent to $1000, but that doesn’t tell me enough. Where I live $1000 a would be barely scraping by money for a month. However for a week it would be decent enough pay for a modest but comfortable living.

I mean, it's lazy. Its a lazy, uncritical premise for a story. Either the main character learns theyre a racist piece of shit and become better or they stay awful and the reader roots against them. Theres absolutely no nuance that can be added because the entire premise is that the protagonist is overgeneralizing. I think its fine for bad manga to exist, but i think one has to be honest about what they signed up for.
It's a mixed bag. On one hand, I can easily see the aliens having used non violent means to conquer or influence Earth and how that has led to mild social stratification. This is worrying. On the other hand, we're viewing this story through the point of view of two people who are clearly xenophobic assholes who seem to care more about hating the aliens than the well-being of other humans. Just because someone is the protagonist doesn't make them a hero. Everything is up to interpretation at this point because it feels vague still. But I guess we'll see. Thanks for the video.
it's certainly controversial as a series, and the main characters are not good people quite the opposite, but it's not like every story has to have good people as protagonists. but the ability of Americans to have to see an oriental work necessarily in an American vision of the world is ridiculous. It's quite evidently a story of colonialism, more inparticular than the American one after WW2 it seems to me, even if certain things can be seen from two different points of view, technological supremacy can only be made to make sense in one of them. the boss who doesn't know the language of his employees, a person who was put there to expand the company abroad. the neighbors, western people who moved without knowing the social norms of the place. etc. then they are not put together in the best way, it would be necessary to see the original text that some lost in translation is probable, but this ambiguity seems quite intentional to me, wait at least one volume before judging the narrative direction. I won't talk too much about the speech at the beginning about the manga situation, although it is true that with manhwa the competition has increased, the manga world is anything but downward, maybe things at the top a little but if for example you read something a little more niche, not super niche, you would find a lot, a zatchbell 2 a Helck and its sequel (on hiatus for now), kengan omega etc. Shonen Jump is no longer the end of all manga fortunately.

This is an interesting manga. I seen the drama on Reddit. An a minority myself living in a more affluent community I can see the value in a piece of media like this. The whole read I’ll be hoping to see them get what they deserve but I will see this one through.
I'm calling it now. They're both part Alien, which is why they get nosebleeds around aliens. And its called Drama Queen, specifically because they're overreacting oddballs.. Nick, big fan been watching since prob 50k on nc hammer. Obviously I’m not gonna melt down and stop watching, but this is the absolute worst video of yours I’ve seen. Not because of script or quality but because this is an anime channel. I can respect digging into the controversial new stuff but not the extreme bias throughout.Introduced as if you were gonna look fairly from both angles and let us decide, but then most of the asides was explicit catering to left ideals. I can understand being incredibly opinionated as I am, but stretching things to that degree to come off as being right is just lame to me. Ex. Comparison of the aliens having Jim Crow esque parking lots and housing, to native Americans being sequestered to the fraction of the land they have left if they wish to live their way of life. The aliens aren’t targeted as minorities by the people of Japan the way natives are in the us/canada. Bias ex. While we never saw noma moto get struck, the aliens behavior of extreme rudeness to humans, refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing and dodge responsibility (hit and run), as well as her boss clocking another guy a not caring, we can assume that he was hitting her. Skip to the cooling spray scene, she was watching her abuser die, not an innocent man. Could go on but this is already a book so I’ll just end by adding that I send no hate and will continue to be a viewer, just really wish to see less biased or just not politics at all, also targeting someone to try to de-platform them is the exact thing extreme alt ON EITHER SIDE expect and want people to do for more ammunition to use for their own side. Aside from the garbage attempt to ironically poke fun at the far right, the story is not even good. What is even the plot? Eating more aliens? That will get monotonous quick. I read it and not only was weirded out by the racism but didn’t even feel compelled to read more.
Even if it's bad, should it be deplatformed? It might need a long while to sit in the oven. Great manga like Vinland Saga are anti-war and established a tough and war filled world for the whole first season. This manga could do something similar, and we just dont know yet.

There are several good manga going on atm it sucks no one’s really talking about em unless they’re a social commentary on racism. But like, there’s MAD which has been going for a while and NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT or Bug Ego(what if you could use “hacks” exploits built into reality) or Asura’s verdict could really go either way tbh but it’s not like there’s nothing at all.
This is a weird one. I feel like there’s not enough context to say how we’re meant to interpret their actions. It could be a Death Note or AOT situation. Where it’s meant to be a commentary on human nature (maybe the consumption of meat). If we’re meant to agree with the MC’s then the series is at best wildly tone deaf and at worst a cringy xenophobic self insert for the manga writer.

I'm just expecting Death Note 2.0 at this point. The new character seems to be another L style detective, but like, the mc's are bumbling idiots and clearly out of their depth. So, instead of evading the detective through geniusly crafted master plans, they're going to do it through sheer dumb luck.
I feel like if the author didn't want us to sympathize with the aliens, he wouldn't have drawn the missing posters of the five young aliens that were brutalized. It shows that they have families and people who care about them.
I don't get the sense that mc's actions are being glorified, if anything, it feels like a horrorific tragedy unfolding before our eyes.
This might end up being an anti racism manga. Showing a cautionary tale of where those xenophobic and racist sentiments can ultimately lead.
All the drama surrounding this manga can also be an argument for why media literacy is important.
If we can't explore and criticize these sentiments in fiction, then how the hell else are we supposed to reconcile with them? Or even understand them?
I will only drop this manga if the killing of aliens is somehow glorified or justified in some way that makes you want to root for the mc's. So far, I don't see that. If the author is employing horror manga style shading during a murder scene, it's not meant to be taken as a good thing, imo.

Yeah, the glorification of killing is what made me drop overlord after the lizardmen arc. Like we got to love these characters just for them to die, 2 get revived and what was the point. Right? Just read the first chapter of Drama Queen and I definitely like it? Like obviously these characters aren't meant to be glorified or celebrated but I like how human they feel, flaws and all. The "drama" surrounding Drama Queen is what made me check it out in the 1st place. The story is interesting and I think everyone should check it out for themselves
The Streisand effect. When you go out of your way to "deplatform" and censor, it attracts more attention. And when you force creatives to coincide with a particular messaging to be "accepted" and to get rid of hate, you create more resentment and frustration. One can argue it's better to stand up against racism and xenophobia but not at the cost of castrating human expression. There is a difference between being racist and writing a racist story.

Japan has had a really hard time accepting foreigners to the point where even if you marry in you aren't considered Japanese, neither are your kids from what I've been told. This manga just feels like a heavy representation of what happens when Japan actually starts accepting foreigners. I don’t know about Kagura Bachi, but let me just say this: Kaiju No. 8 is not cooking anything. That’s got to be one of the worst things Shonen Jump has put out in the last decade, and I’m dead serious. I’ve read about 70 chapters, so I know what I’m talking about. From an educational standpoint, please enlighten me-what exactly do you enjoy about it? Because I don’t get the hype at all. The anime was decent at best for its first 12 episodes, but the amount of glaze it gets from NPCs is insane. I genuinely can’t find a single redeeming quality in that entire manga.
I really can’t get behind people jumping to conclusions and attacking this series for being racist or hateful. Cause there just isn’t anything concrete that shows the author or team working on this series holds any type of view. It’s a new series about aliens kinda assimilating into earth and The main characters don’t like aliens for a few reason and view it as an invasion of sorts. It’s not exactly a one in a million story, there are countless stories about aliens and invasions and conflict.
Tbh with what is available right now I feel all that can be said is that it released at an unfortunate time. Manga aren’t made over night and this series just happened to start publication when the series can lousily parallel irl situations. Maybe that was intentional on the authors part maybe it’s just an unfortunate coincidence but blatantly saying it’s racist without any real evidence is just not right. Two questions for those in the comments that are more versed in life in Japan.
Nomamoto’s paycheck of 100,810 yen, how much is that compared to the cost of living?
Sub question, would that paycheck be for a week, two weeks, or a month? It doesn’t say in the manga, but what is common for Japan’s workforce?
Mainly I want to know for better context. The note said the pay was roughly equivalent to $1000, but that doesn’t tell me enough. Where I live $1000 a would be barely scraping by money for a month. However for a week it would be decent enough pay for a modest but comfortable living.

Idk man a lot of this is a mirror when it comes to the UK and over here in the US as well like the Daniel Penny case and Japan watches this and sees the hypocrisy because it's obvious but people in the UK and in the US just don't want to be called racist or other names instead of just pointing out the hypocrisies.

I mean, it's lazy. Its a lazy, uncritical premise for a story. Either the main character learns theyre a racist piece of shit and become better or they stay awful and the reader roots against them. Theres absolutely no nuance that can be added because the entire premise is that the protagonist is overgeneralizing. I think its fine for bad manga to exist, but i think one has to be honest about what they signed up for.
It's a mixed bag. On one hand, I can easily see the aliens having used non violent means to conquer or influence Earth and how that has led to mild social stratification. This is worrying.
On the other hand, we're viewing this story through the point of view of two people who are clearly xenophobic assholes who seem to care more about hating the aliens than the well-being of other humans. Just because someone is the protagonist doesn't make them a hero.
Everything is up to interpretation at this point because it feels vague still. But I guess we'll see. Thanks for the video.
it's certainly controversial as a series, and the main characters are not good people quite the opposite, but it's not like every story has to have good people as protagonists. but the ability of Americans to have to see an oriental work necessarily in an American vision of the world is ridiculous. It's quite evidently a story of colonialism, more inparticular than the American one after WW2 it seems to me, even if certain things can be seen from two different points of view, technological supremacy can only be made to make sense in one of them. the boss who doesn't know the language of his employees, a person who was put there to expand the company abroad. the neighbors, western people who moved without knowing the social norms of the place. etc. then they are not put together in the best way, it would be necessary to see the original text that some lost in translation is probable, but this ambiguity seems quite intentional to me, wait at least one volume before judging the narrative direction. I won't talk too much about the speech at the beginning about the manga situation, although it is true that with manhwa the competition has increased, the manga world is anything but downward, maybe things at the top a little but if for example you read something a little more niche, not super niche, you would find a lot, a zatchbell 2 a Helck and its sequel (on hiatus for now), kengan omega etc. Shonen Jump is no longer the end of all manga fortunately.
Don’t listen to some of the triggered people in the comments. They’re just mad when something bad that leans right wing gets spoken on it makes them ashamed of it. The left and the right wing have bad things about them and anyone would be biased liars if they denied it. This is very much comparable to all those topics you are mentioning. While it’s still only a speculation; things like this need to be discussed in general.
It’s a bit extreme for everyone to dog pile this yet with only two chapters, I think this take is bad faith and a little volatile we don’t know anything about this world or what’s happening if anything. Everyone should just chill on this until there’s more to digest, I haven’t heard anything about the author yet either

I'm still holding out hope it becomes a Death Note-esque story, with the protagonists being the villains. Or maybe like AoT, where Nomamoto finds out she's part-alien (though hopefully she doesn't completely go the Eren route). But yeah, these first few chapters had a ton of readers just blatantly exposing themselves as racist online.
Or it's a story about people being oppressed by their government fighting back........
This is an interesting manga. I seen the drama on Reddit. An a minority myself living in a more affluent community I can see the value in a piece of media like this. The whole read I’ll be hoping to see them get what they deserve but I will see this one through.

I'm calling it now. They're both part Alien, which is why they get nosebleeds around aliens. And its called Drama Queen, specifically because they're overreacting oddballs.. Like I'm all for speaking against racism and hate, but this feels awfully political. In which the video went, it seems to hold some disdain for the "right" like in both "left" and "right" there is racism, classicism, and sexism so forth and so on and also good individuals on either that sincerely wish to end these things. Just my personal opinion, can't we end the "who can piss the furthest" between the two, but staying on track I believe most people have taken a history class and seen hate don't do no good. Nick, big fan been watching since prob 50k on nc hammer. Obviously I’m not gonna melt down and stop watching, but this is the absolute worst video of yours I’ve seen. Not because of script or quality but because this is an anime channel. The aliens aren’t targeted as minorities by the people of Japan the way natives are in the us/canada. Bias ex. While we never saw noma moto get struck, the aliens behavior of extreme rudeness to humans, refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing and dodge responsibility (hit and run), as well as her boss clocking another guy a not caring, we can assume that he was hitting her. Skip to the cooling spray scene, she was watching her abuser die, not an innocent man. Could go on but this is already a book so I’ll just end by adding that I send no hate and will continue to be a viewer, just really wish to see less biased or just not politics at all, also targeting someone to try to de-platform them is the exact thing extreme alt ON EITHER SIDE expect and want people to do for more ammunition to use for their own side. Aside from the garbage attempt to ironically poke fun at the far right, the story is not even good. What is even the plot? Eating more aliens? That will get monotonous quick. I read it and not only was weirded out by the racism but didn’t even feel compelled to read more.
Even if it's bad, should it be deplatformed? It might need a long while to sit in the oven. Great manga like Vinland Saga are anti-war and established a tough and war filled world for the whole first season. This manga could do something similar, and we just dont know yet.
