Speaking of knowing multiple languages, my Nigerian friend from church taught a sermon one Sunday and began by asking, “I can speak Nigerian and English, so what does that make me?” The congregation answered, “bilingual”. He then asked, “so what are you called if you can speak 3 languages?” To which the congregation hesitantly answered, “trilingual?” Lastly, he asked, “so what are you called if you can only speak 1 language?” The congregation was silent, to which my Nigerian friend answered, “American”.

Hey, Bear! As a healthcare provider, hearing Nate's description of his "Trail of Tears" heading home from Lexington, I found myself mentally calculating his blood glucose levels and am surprised he didn't go into a one of those diabetic staring episodes that Dusty knows so well. I will say that after hugging Nate at Greg Warren's special (and having my own speechless Fangirl episode) I think he has definitely earned some Blizzards and ice cream with milk. He has lost a lot of weight and has clearly been working hard both on and off the wagon! I also wanted to throw out there that my husband's fantasy football team is called "Hello Folks"! Hello folks! First time listener, long time commenter here. I spend my day working with kindergarteners teaching them to read. Every time I hear Nate read a slightly difficult word correctly I find myself encouraging him out loud just like I do my 5 and 6 year olds. For instance, I was just listening to the comments from The Weather episode where Nate read the words “rifling through” and then he quickly stopped and asked “right?” immediately after reading the word “rifling” . I immediately answered “good job Nate!” Unfortunately I was listening on my ear buds so I sounded like a crazy lady to my family in the other room but that didn’t dampen my enthusiasm one bit. Which then rabbit-trailed into a two minute discussion that had nothing to do with the product. Then Nate showcased his comedic timing with a "I am not even sure if I am a part of this." 3rd Grade Teacher from Huntsville, AL here! I would love to help clear up Dusty’s COMpass confusion. In English, there are stressed and unstressed syllables in words. In an unstressed syllable, a lot of times we make a “lazy” vowel sound called a “schwa.” It can happen with any vowel. It’s why when you say “away,” you say “uh-way” instead of “A-way.” Tons of multi-syllable words have the “schwa” sound like lemon (lemUHn), president (presUHdent), banana (bUHnanUH), and compass (cUHmpass.) Yes, 3rd graders have to know this… but don’t worry, I didn’t learn about the “schwa” myself until I started teaching 3rd grade reading a few years ago!

Nate sometimes jokes about his intellect regarding speaking, reading, and comprehension. But then he talks about how language restrictions pushed people like Stern to be better. I thought that was incredibly insightful. Not many people realize that the lack of restrictions has hurt us more than helped us.
Also, I think there need to be more comics who could be G rated as Nate is. The fact that I can suggest his standup acts to literally anyone is rare. Nate, don’t ever lose that! Hi Nate, my name is Kassie Massey and I am a dietitian who specializes in disordered eating. Every week you seem to describe being stuck in what we call the restrict-binge cycle with your eating. You eat “good foods” for a while and then the pendulum swings in the complete opposite direction. You should consider trying to give yourself unconditional permission to eat foods, soon the novelty of your “junk” foods will wear off and you’ll likely crave more nutritious options. For instance, after the day you had McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, candy, etc. you probably didn’t feel well and seemed to enjoy your yogurt and granola the next morning all the more. You probably overdo the junk foods because they seem off-limits. Anyway best of luck!

Nate I’m so happy for you that you met your goal weight and were able to give yourself a congratulatory cheat week (or 2). A few years ago when I went from 198 to 160 lbs I was struggling about halfway through and what got me the rest of the way was decided to congratulate myself after with a gorge session of whatever I want and got to the point I was watching other people gorge on the foods I loved in RUclips videos.
Unfortunately my congratulatory cheat session never ended and I found myself about 3 years later at 208 lbs. this time you were my driving force. You openly struggle with sweets like I do and I kept at it alongside you (slightly delayed because I had to see you doing it first) and as of this morning am back down to 183 lbs (25 down so far) and another 8 to go. Not going to the 160’s again because last time people were asking if I was ok/had cancer/was sick/dying etc.

I am a big fan of Nate and was ecstatic to stumble across this podcast. I spent the past 2 months catching up on all the episodes and I was devastated to be caught up - because now I have to wait a week before starting the next one. I catch myself saying "GOOD NIGHT" several times a day and I'm trying to make 'in one fell swoop' the next buzzword/phrase overused in corporate America. I went to your show in Northampton, Mass and the opener was making jokes about Salem. The crowd (being typical New Englanders) were not laughing... and finally someone shouted 'We aren't even close to Salem!'. I died laughing... and was immediately suspicious that it was a set up. However, once I found the podcast I realized that there was NO WAY it was a set up and that the comic truly did not realize. Which made the memory even funnier. I have tickets to your show in Hartford in November and I don't care that its the same material. I have nosebleed seats but will do my best to shout out 'HEY BEAR'. I hope you can hear me. I work for Travelers and was chatting with one of the big wigs about trying to get you on the Travelers Championship Pro Am. He is also a fan of yours - so no promises - but we are going to try and get you a slot. It would be FANTASTIC to have you golf during our Championship. www.travelers.com/about-travelers/travelers-championship Thanks for being hilarious -

Regarding Dusty’s family & friends being in jail “a lot”: growing up my dad’s family members had enough people going to jail that if someone said, “hey what’s Woodrow up to?” (Real name, by the way) and they’d respond “oh he’s working for the state.” The family way to say he’s in prison.

one of the things I love about Nate is that I didn't even realize he was a clean comic until I started listening to the podcast and he talked about being a clean comedian. definitely doesn't need the language or the sexual content to be hilarious. it's nice to have a comedian to recommend to anyone without a caution statement

Hey Bear! Just saw Nate in Colorado Springs! What a fun night! Nate - amazing you did the incline. Rumor is that famous USA speed skater Apollo Ono used to train and do the incline on one leg each way. What is the comedic equivalent? Getting a laugh from a church crowd? I’m a pastor so you know…I get it. TN boy and love all your stuff and total Nateland fan boy.

Nate’s point about cursing is what I was saying about ads commercials and tv shows now. You have daytime tv and ads that can be very sexual innuendo heavy and I remember growing up tv wasn’t like that.

I for one truly appreciate Nate being a clean comic! And I’m sure I’m not alone. I once heard it said that cursing is the crutch of the intellectual cripple. This makes sense when you listen to how many times people interject cursing into everyday language.

I learned a great deal in this episode; 1. Aaron is Michelin grade chef with his word salad! Just big words drenched in simple ideas that is garnished with questions posed as answers. 2. Breadbox is the walking stereotype of the southern christian man untarnished by the secular world. 3. Dust Pan has a child??! 17 months, almost a year and a half, how long has he been on the show? Has this supposed child been referenced before? 4. Reader Mode, what is this reader mode? Had no idea which feels like salt in a wound, finding out on this show, whom go on to say how much they hate reading. 5. Lastly The Dead Language which is technically not dead. Latin, although does not have native speakers but due to an overwhelming presence in European & Western science, medicine, & literature, it will never be classified as a "dead language." I've been watching/listening since the start & witnessing not only the evolution of the show but the bear folk of the show, has been equally entertaining. Keep it up!

Language was a great topic for this week's Podcast because of it's huge diversification encompassing the Vagaries of our language. ie: In the word scent, is "S" silent-or "C"? Why is there a "D" in fridge, but not in refrigerator? Ever wonder why the word funeral starts with FUN? Why isn't a Fireman called a Water-man? If money doesn't grow on trees, how come Banks have Branches? Why are goods sent by ship called CARGO and those sent by truck SHIPMENT? Why do we put cups in the dishwasher and the dishes in the Cupboard? Why is it called 'Rush Hour" when traffic moves at its slowest pace? And how come Noses run...and Feet smell? UNBELIEVABLE....TO BE CONTINUED.....Loved watching the four of you. Always entertaining and enlightening.

I meant to comment on whatever podcast it was where you mentioned Travis Walton’s alien abduction but I’m a procrastinator so I’m commenting on this one instead. My husband and I met Travis Walton at a MUFON conference in Pennsylvania 10 years ago. I asked him how come they had him found naked in the movie Fire in the Sky, when in his book and in his presentations he said he had clothes on when he was found, and he said something like “That’s Hollywood.” So I asked him which movie or TV show portrayed his story the most accurately. He said the episode on the TV show Paranormal Witness. He said they did it the closest to what really happened (at least as of 2012 when this conversation happened). Anyway, after meeting him and talking to him and looking in his eyes, I believe that something really did happen to that man. p.s. my surname is pronounced like Hind in hindsight.

I think Nate should name a comedy special "Words Are Hard" .. I believe Nate said that phrase on an earlier podcast episode and I about spit out my coffee laughing because he sounded so defeated while saying it. Also maybe Dusty is thinking of Slush Puppies instead of Icee's? I grew up on those and Dusty and I came from similar backgrounds.. My Dad used to take me to the carry out/convenience store and buy me a slush puppy while he bought a 12 pack of beer. I got slushed while he got sloshed.

We heard someone else yell it and I replied "Hello folks!". The girl stopped mid-step, turned to me, and said "what was that? Do not ever do that again". We haven't spoken since the hike. Thank you guys for helping me dodge that bullet early. Love the podcast, come do a show in NW Montana please! Closest cities are Missoula (2 hours away) and Spokane WA (4 hours).

I always wanted to sit in the truck bed growing up. But no one I knew ever had a truck. Then, my dad borrowed a truck from a friend and let me sit in my bed. I was having the time of my life. Only downside was, the truck had a topper on it, with no windows, and the bed was full of tools. So, I was back there, but not sure I had the full experience.

Why “Go.” is a complete sentence: a sentence is a group of words giving a complete thought and must contain a subject and a verb (although one may be implied). The sentence “Go.” is an imperative sentence, meaning it gives a command. The actual meaning is “You go.” The subject, “you,” is implied, but the thought is complete.
Although not technically a complete sentence, Aaron Weber has demonstrated that the following IS a complete thought: “Enough.”

A couple of my favorite facts about the english language are:
You can use the word “had” four times in a row in a sentence and it still makes perfect sense. For example: “What he had had had had an effect on other people.”
Also “strengths” is the longest english word that’s only one syllable.

My family loves a snack we call "peanut butter popcorn." It's basically melted peanut butter mixed with Caro syrup, then poured over a bowl of freshly popped popcorn. Mix it up and voila! Since I use microwave popcorn, there's always some un-popped kernels that my kids just know to watch out for. When my son was 10, he had a friend over to watch a movie and asked for peanut butter popcorn as his friend had never had it. Of course I made a big bowl for them to share. A few minutes later, I realized that I should mention to the friend to be careful of the kernels. I went back in the room to discover the rest of my family, including my husband, had joined the boys, everyone enjoying the snack and my son's friend casually spitting the kernels back into the bowl. Everyone was glued to the movie, not noticing. I shuddered a little, but decided to let it ride. If only my son would've invited little 10 year old Aaron, whom I could have trusted to eat the
un-popped kernels instead of shooting them back into the bowl like some Skoal dude at Dusty's trailer.
