    Great video! Before buying SBGA085, did you look at the larger 40mm models? Does it wear like a typical 39mm watch? I really like the SBGA373, but like the 39mm size of the SBGA283.

      Thx Stranger (I sound like John Wayne haha).
      yes I did. I was looking at the Snowflake but it was just a little large on my wrist. However, the titanium made it feel lighter. And oh that dial! ;)

    Wanted to say thanks for this video. I Bought this watch last week and watched this video every night while I waited for customs and Parcelfarce to process and deliver it. 10 days later I’m watching it again wearing the watch. Normally that’s the sort of embarrassing shit I’d keep to myself but in Watchgeek circles... I’m among friends 😁

    Spring Drive!!! Fantastic. It's not a hybrid... It's a fully mechanical watch with magnets used to slow down spring instead of the escapement wheel, and the quartz part is being charged from the spring energy, and it's only for the magnet regulation to provide accuracy no other mechanical movement can achieve.

    • @artl52
      @artl52  6 лет назад

      Hello Andrew. Thanks for watching. I agree - Spring Drive is unbeatable technology

    • @patrickmacleod2415
      @patrickmacleod2415 6 лет назад +2

      It's a hybrid, plain and simple. I don't know why you and some others have a problem admitting that. Your own statement says it all, "the quartz part..." It's a great movement. It is unique, and it provides the best of both worlds, but to say it's not a hybrid is just silly.

    • @artl52
      @artl52  6 лет назад +2

      "It's a Hybrid" There, I've said it. Not sure why you think I wouldn't. And what does it matter?

    • @Databyter
      @Databyter 6 лет назад +3

      The reason Spring Drive fans are sometimes defensive, is because this movement is often dismissed out of hand as being a "quartz" movement watch. This IS a mechanical watch, with an automatic movement, that has to be respected for all the reasons that all automatics should be respected. It IS a hybrid, no doubt, but it is not a quartz watch in the classic sense, and it must be defended as an electro mechanical masterpiece, unlike most quartz. In my opinion, it is the pinnacle of movement evolution. It is a watch that needs very little maintenance (despite the recommendations) by design, is self powered, self contained, and has impeccable accuracy. We need to draw attention to the differences between this and a standard quartz movement, and educate about what a mechanical masterpiece it is. As they go down this road, they will leave solar and kinetic in the dust. No batteries required. Most watches have some sort of reciprocal motion at some point that makes them wear the tiny gears in time. With spring drive there is no quartz jolt, there is no reciprocating reversing component. Watches are jeweled and lubricated to last the time that they are capable of, which can be decades in some cases of very high quality watches, but realistically they should be maintained more often. Bit Spring drive, has the capability, at least on paper, to be super jeweled and lubed with much longer maintenance free periods (Altho they will not want to market it this way because they think they will lose money). It is a watch that could be made to last a generation without being maintained. Even the ones they are making now, probably could last 3-4 times longer than the recommended maintenance intervals, and that is only because the oils and jeweling that is used is designed for watches that need to be serviced more often. I predict a watch that can go (and should be marketed this way!) for a generation without maintenance. Worn to wind, no batteries to change, set it once or twice a year at most if you wear it enough to keep it wound. I would like to see a removable crown as well. Something you can use like a key when you want to set or wind manually, but then put in your watch case for the rest of the year. Anyway, I go on. This is my grail movement, so yea, I am a Spring Drive Fanboy. I want to see them market this as the pinnacle of movement evolution.

    • @artl52
      @artl52  6 лет назад +1

      well said, Databyter. I wholeheartedly agree. The only other modern watch movement from an evolutionary point of view might be the Defy movement from Zenith. Thanks for watching.

    I bought this watch when it first came out many years ago. Still has it.
    IMHO, I think the finishing of the the watch is superb. The way light bounced off the bracelet and the case is quite outstanding.
    Except the dial. GS has the most remarkable dial designs but not this one. This one is a plain Jane. The legibility is very good though. No distraction, just a good old black matte dial.
    The sizing can be challenging without micro adjustment. Luckily it came with enough half links and the link removal process is not too difficult.
    I do feel the watch is a little top heavy though. I could feel every mm of this 12mm case. For its size, this is quite heavy.

      this was one of my first videos. I think the audio has gotten better over the last 2 years. In fact, I just purchased a new mike and some new audio gear to improve it even more. Let me take a look at this. I think I still have the original mp3 sound files and I have been thinking of a re-edit of this video. Thanks for asking and watching Brandon.

    It's a shame that Rolex give up the caliber 6694, the Three Center Hands manual wind watch, though it's not good enough for a watch collector, with the low beat, low power reserve, and not being a certified chronometer. They should upgrade it and give the Grand Seiko SBGW series a run for the money. Being mass produced, we cannot expect Rolex to have finishing like the GS, but, they can try to match the mechanism. Then perhaps, they can gain a bit of respect from people who knows a bit about watches.

    • @artl52
      @artl52  5 лет назад +1

      You are correct Canon - people who know watches know that Rolex is the epitome of mass produced production/quality, but that Rolex is not all that respected for finishing or movements. There are many brands including Grand Seiko that surpass Rolex in the finishing and movements. Even at the same price point.

    • @canonyeo4286
      @canonyeo4286 5 лет назад +2

      @@artl52 Agree. I think Omega makes better watches. The De Ville Tressor is a Three Centre Hands desired by watch collectors. It runs at 25200bph with 60 hrs power reserve. It's a chronometer and does has a hacking second hand, quite a rare feature, in swiss manual mechanism. it's cased in gold and selling for about 10K, pre-owned. Well, the GS SBGW is in stainless steel. They don't need gold to make it shine. It's a way better watch in every sense. And, it only cost 3K, new!

    Nice watch but from a distance it just looks like a slightly fancier Sarb033. I fully appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into GS watches but I think they need to be a little more creative with thier designs.

      It's a watch for the nerds to stare at through a loupe, and in macro shots. But nobody does that in every day life.
      Big picture, it's the same design as a SARB. And that's ok, that's what they're going for. Just don't know if I want to drop 3 grand on an enhanced SARB.

    bah spring drive is not an engineering marvel, bulova precisionist is as good for a lot cheaper, you can get a sub 150$ brand new bulova precisionist 1/1000sec chrono on ebay with the same accuracy and almost the same smoothness as a Spring Drive , where as the latter will run you at leat 20 times the price for a simple time & power reserve complication

    • @FatSamEIE
      @FatSamEIE 5 лет назад +1

      A casio g shock with multiband 6 can be more accurate than the bulova for a fraction of the price too
      The accuracy of a GS spring drive is one of the many reasons people buy them, not the sole reason.

    • @jonabitstream
      @jonabitstream 4 года назад

      Remember, Spring Drive is regulated by a quartz crystal, hence it will be as accurate as any good quartz movement. And even cheap quartz movements are likely more accurate than any mechanical movement you can find.
