  • Amazing to get some video of a mother hare with her two little ones, including a couple of clips of one or other of them suckling. Apparently they only meet up once a day to be fed - the mothers milk is so nutritious that just a few minutes of suckling is enough!

Yes, only a few minutes of suckling occurs. But the milk is over 16% fat compared with 3% for cow's milk, so there's enough energy transfer in those few minutes. The leverets grow at about 23 grams per day and start eating solids at 7 days of age. Normally they're weaned at about 4 weeks of age, but during the southern Australian summer when food and water are scarce, the jill (mother) extends lactation for another 2 weeks.
A question: Who is the author of this clip? Academic protocols require that information be attributed to the specific 'author' (the person who actually took the video), not 'NatureCam Scotland'. I'm interested in the fact of the180 degree turn made by the juvenile at about the 1 minute 25 seconds mark; I do not want to copy any images.

Thanks for your comment, and all the information! Very interesting. I believe in academic work if you are referencing something from the internet you need only state the web source and the date you accessed it. Thanks
