This is a review of the Cobra Elite frogman - the Hydro-Viper, also known as the "Demon Of The Deep". Distinguished from the ranks of Cobra Eel frogmen, the Hydro-Viper's get their sinister nickname from their genetic modification and creepy accessories. The figure is very distinctive due to the left hand being webbed and unusable. In fact, many people seem to remember them from just that feature alone.
This guy was my first Joe so he'll always be special to me. Bought to me by my mom. She bought Blizzard for my older brother. Ah, memories.
I always assumed or at least in my Joeverse it would work that you would start as a blueshirt, then either become a Viper, or an Eel. From there you move onto the specialists. Eels become Lampreys, Snow Serpents etc
I have a Hydro-Viper carded. Definitely one of the most visually interesting characters. I've always liked his card art.
I think this guy is a left over of Cobra La. i was glad you showed the others to see how well they fit together. It was land, sea and air together.
Hi Kevin,
Very interesting comment mentioning that the 1988 Nullifier was originally meant to be a Cobra La motorbike driver and the 1988 Hydro-Viper could have been originally designed as a Cobra La diver.
As you say, there are many organic motives in the figure that lead to think in that way. Also the purple color (shared as well with the Nullifiers) match with the Cobra La color schemes.
Something also leads to think that there were higher expectations for the Cobra La line, and maybe, if they would have been fulfilled, we would have possibly got a '1988 Pythona' as a carded figure, and the Royal Guard figure re-packed as a carded figure as well for the 1988 line, to army build it....!
It doesn't sound crazy if you think Pythona would have been the next female character in the line, after the 1987 Jinx.
ln fact l find it one of the best and most memorable troopers
I've even written a song inspired by this guy when I was 17 or 18, called "The diver runs", which was later performed by my talented friend with a guitar and many people heard it and loved it around the world. :)
I would love to hear it!
I could only find an instrumental version without the vocals unfortunately, but now you can find it among my uploads. ;)
Weird but awesome figure. Used to have one as a kid. Sweet review
Hasbro needs to make a 25th anniversary-styled Hydro-Viper..
I loved the Hydro-Viper! Mine was stolen a few months after I bought it, I still have all of his accessories. I'm glad that you finally reviewed this one. Thx. I haven't checked yet, what can I expect to pay for one?
Just the figure alone should cost about $5.00 but I wouldn't be surprised if you can find one even cheaper at a flea market, thrift store or garage sale.
Cool, thx for the tip. I Thrift stores never cease to surprise me, I picked up a HISS Tank (minus the turret) for $0.40. I was pleasantly surprised.
I actually liked this figure enjoyed the review
if you could I would like to see a entire viper review
Will next week's review be the second version of Deep Six?
Sorry, I won't be doing Deep Six v2 for this Navy theme month - I'm planning on doing him after a new HD review of the 1984 Sharc/Deep Six v1 next year. Next week will be the Cobra Battle Barge, then 1990 Topside and October will start the Iron Grenadiers theme month.
