  • Because the phrase "Peanut Gallery" has racist origins, I should not have used the phrase in my video:
    "Introduction to Uniformly Accelerated Motion"
    www.flippingphy...
    I am sorry.

This was not necessary at all. There is absolutely no need to apologize for using the words "Peanut Gallery". Almost no rational person associates that with racism. You are not making the world a better place, but it is in fact creating a world where people can't say anything. There is literally nothing that can be said that doesn't offend someone out there. Rational people understand the place you are coming from. People with axes to grind are always going to be finding someone else to target and tear down because their own lives have inadequacies. You're videos have helped 1000s of kids of all races be better at Physics. That fact alone makes you a good person and not the fact that people online are try to turn everything into something to be offended. You cannot EVER please these people.

No don’t do this. Peanut gallery refers to not wanting advice from poor people, not just from black people. It’s a class term not a race term. Just because there is a correlation between class and race, doesn’t mean all class words are race words.
Poor white people and poor black people had to sit together in the peanut gallery. I find the term to be quite a unifying class conscious term that reminds us that the financial-military-corporate-lobbyist industrial complex still doesn’t want to know what poor people of any color thinks. Our government oligarchy (DNC, RNC) still thinks of poor people as the peanut gallery. I’m going to use the term with pride to solidify my common cause with poor Americans of all colors. We’re all the peanut gallery now.

The phrase does go back to post-Civil War vaudeville and does refer to the cheap seats which were likely to heckle the performers. But any connection to racism is pretty tenuous.
Giving in to the speech police is not being sensitive, it is allowing people who want to take phrases that are innocuous and seek to find offense with them for control. This is a counterproductive trend and serves to divide rather than unite.

I am also very happy that you chose to go this route rather than simply remove the other video. It is absolutely exactly the case you mentioned in this video! Not only will my students learn about UAM, but they will also learn about the racist origins of the phrase. Something I think they could definitely use as high school students in a very small and sheltered rural community! Thank you!!

As a fellow science teacher who also makes videos, I appreciate you having the courage to point out the unintentional racist undertones of a common phase of speech (especially one you've innocently used in a past video). You could've just quietly self-corrected, but you chose to put it out there as a teachable moment for everyone. I also had no idea and I bet most people don't, so this video will help. Top shelf move.

@@FlippingPhysics I've been thinking of this video and the range of comments you got all week. While I certainly understand the meaning of words change (my science teacher brain thinks of decimate for instance), you have the choice of using it or not. You haven't asked anyone else to stop using it; you just made a personal judgement based on what you learned about its origins. You should have the freedom to choose that... There are plenty of words out there.
Anyone who disagrees on this particular word would surely agree there are SOME words that if used could be offensive and hurtful because of the historical backstory. If I'm going to offend someone I'd at least like to know I'm doing it. 😆
It's been good food for thought. Thanks again.

Dude. Take it easy on yourself. You are a great human. The phrase is more classist and bigoted than racist. I never really knew the origin either. My parents used to say "cotton picken hands" because it is what they heard back in the 30's and 40's . I had no clue about its origins. Racist???? Maybe. Ignorant? Yes. Btw I am an Honors/AP 1 Physics teacher (in my 30th year) and I love your approach to teaching. Keep up the good work. But thanks for the apology, though I am not sure it was necessary. Philosophical question. Where do we draw the line between free speech, censorship, ignorance, accountability and real racism?

No one cares if two black friends call eachother nigger or nigga. Because it has a different meaning in that context.
If you were not saying something racist in your use of that word. Then you were not being racist and you shouldn't have to apologise.
