Jawa Jones is an Indonesian-English DJ, vinyl collector, radio host, and founder of Wanita Music which provides space for female vinyl DJs to shine and play records by their favourite female artists. She regularly runs two music events in London: Wanita, a female-focused vinyl night at Walthamstow Trades Hall and East Asia Beat at Spiritland with her DJ partner Lucky Cat Zoë. On the first Friday of every month, she hosts the Wanita Music Show at Radio X Frankfurt City FM 91.8 where she invites ladies working in the music biz to share stories and play their favourite records. Jawa has DJed at music festivals and club dance floors across Europe where she plays garage rock, psych, East Asia beat and soul.
Enjoy a technicolour trip to the ‘60s and ‘70s with a selection of heavenly voices by extraordinary female artists from South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Turkey, France, Hungary and America.
This mix aims to spotlight the many incredible female vocalists, songwriters, producers and musicians in the psych, folk and garage rock genres and celebrate their talent. Some are legends in their own right, while others were less known but ahead of their time, influencing artists today.
