Why are My Eyes Sensitive to Light?

  • Light sensitivity can arise from dysfunction in the midbrain's control over pupillary reflexes and eye movements. The midbrain integrates pupillary constriction with vertical eye movements (saccades and gaze holding) and a patient whose pupils exhibit pulsating dilation when looking upwards may indicate fatigue in the midbrain's ability to maintain pupillary constriction during vertical gaze shifts. This instability can lead to excessive light entering the eye, causing discomfort or pain. Strengthening the midbrain pathways involved in coordinating pupillary responses and eye movements may help alleviate light sensitivity symptoms

Thank you very much, my eye movements make me see black spots and also going from a place with little light to a lot of light causes the same thing, I didn't know the explanation behind it.

Does the midbrain itself cause the pupils to constrict, or is it the inhibitory firing from the frontal lobe that suppresses the midbrain, which then constricts the pupils? It's a little confusing, as you would assume a midbrain with stronger/heightened activity would hold the pupils more dilated as opposed to constricted, in order to make the host more aware of and alert to their surroundings. Thanks as always for the insightful content Doc
