When I was in my 20s [1973]I worked for a roofing company with 40 guys. We used to come in at 6:30 and our trucks were loaded for the day. We usually had a half hour to 45 minute drive to the job. New construction usually ranch or split level. We backed the truck up to the closest gutterboard and we would felt the roof with 15# to start then shingle up 6'. From there we would stand on the shingle pallet and toss bundles to the edge stacking up 6 bundles at a time. From there we would continue shingling. Best day ever was 8 hours and 17 2/3 square hand nailing 3-tab.
Ross Horan You're saying that because it's not your job. If you got paid the amount he did to stand on the roof and watch people work i believe that you'd have a quite different outlook :P
Thanks for the info. I'll look into my local code before doing my roof. So many videos on RUclips of "fast" roofers use 4 or 5 nails during hand nailing.
why not nail all the nails when you are on that shingle? why take the time and go back? 15 sq is nice by hand but my best day I can do almost 40 with a gun....nailing the whole shingle off (6 nails) when I lay it down
Roofing is a young Man's game! I did it for years, I once carried 200 packs of 80lb shingles up a 12 ft ladder, and walked them to the top roof in 1 day and flipped them into on the top peaks of 3 subdivision houses we Where roofing! Talk about sore AF the next day! Anyway, I prefer a gun, but I can hand nail almost as fast..
+DirtyChode23 Where do the nails need to be placed? I am starting a position as a roofer next week and I have never done this line of work before. Any bit of information will help. Also, 15 squares is that 15 square feet?
No sir a square is a section that is 10'x10' or 3 sheets of plywood. You ideally want to place one nail at both ends no more then an inch from the end of the shingle and the rest of the nails should be dispersed somewhat evenly between the end two. It really depends on the roof pitch where in the nail zone you put the nails. For a steep roof over a 5-12 you can nail right on the line but with a 4-12 or lower pitch you need to nail just a little bit higher so you don't have water bleeding back on the nail heads. Go online and find instructions from elk, iko, Owens corning or gaf cause they are some of the biggest material manufactures in the us and have plenty of installation instructions for you

I have to believe that the title is referring to the amount of time that can be saved by simply setting yourself up properly. His method of setting himself up(or having someone set you up, which I prefer because it allows the nail gun to continue making that money, instead of listening to the unprofitable sound of silence, anytime the nailer is not in use) is the most efficient way I have come across that will help most shinglers be the most efficienct, at least compared to the infinite other methods I have tried. I am not implying that it is the best or only way to do it, there absolutely could be a better way out there, and you also have to consider that different shinglers are more comfortable using different methods. Most of the time, comfort leads to productivity and if not, losing a little production is worth it if it allows your workers the chance to work comfortably. I am a firm believer in letting someone do it whatever way they feel most comfortable. After shingling for 8 hours, being uncomfortable is not something you want your shinglers to be, especially if you expect any production from them tomorrow(this rule does not apply to those young bucks whose backs, knees, hips, elbows, ankles, wrists, feet, hands and fingers are still intact and functioning properly).

Watching videos like this is very informational. However I've only seen the gun installment rather than manual with the good ol' nail and hammer!
Ya 20 inches with no nails is extreme this is not good quality . You only need 3 or so inches on the side of each seam so a 6 -8 inch space with no nails is sufficient at the seam.
pretty awesome really. I don't care if he then fastest in the world. the quality of the work is solid. I'd want that guy work in on my roof. old school style with the hair. ... for sure drives the nail in instead of couple of misfires on a gun
Is this 1970 or something? Why are you all hand banging. The one guy is kind of fast, only puts 4 nails in though which is bunk. And the rest of the crew puts a shingle down every minute. Buy a compressor and some guns! It will make your days go by quicker, instead of the slow guys putting a shingle down every minute, they could put a shingle down every few seconds, with 6 nails on the nail line.
Yeah that would be a weird law. Hand banging is so slow. And have you ever realized when you rip a roof that was hand banged, it comes off extremely easy? I'd love to see someone try and hand bang a 12/12, or 18/12. Would be nearly impossible, it's much easier with a gun because you can hold the shingle with one hand and nail with the other.
youd need multiple compressors and guns for this huge crew lines tangle reloading gun maybe new build and doesnt have power yet so add a genny to run the compressors hammers and kneepads are cheap most likely why
Almost every roofing crew I've seen runs gas engine powered compressors. More power and no risk of breaking circuits. You could cut the required crew per job in half, spread them out over multiple concurrent jobs, and probably do 4 times the jobs per day. There is no advantage to hand nailing that outweighs the benefits of using pneumatic nailers.
i agree with using nail guns. if u knpw anything about nail guns u wpuld know they can be adjusted so they deliver just enough power. . no advantages to hand nailing. rookies. hand nailing is for cavemen. takes double the time.

Mike Brennan we get paid when the job is finished. We have to go fast to make a living. We need to be onto the next job. And for us with experience, going fast for us isn't excluding workmanship. If someone has little to no experience and going that "fast", then it's a problem. We understand everyone thinks they're special and their house is the only house that matters, but you aren't. And it isn't. It's just another house. We do this everyday for years. We can go fast and do it right. If we didn't, or couldn't, we wouldnt be in business very long. People need to make a living.
As a customer, fast is irrelevant and my house is the only one that matters. If you treat your customer's life long investment as just anther house, you won't be in business long.
Thurston Crawford when you've been doing it for a decade or two it's just another house. Sorry to say. It's done right and that's all that matters. Also most people DO want it done fast because they don't want their home to be a construction site for more than a day or two. Not to mention that with years of experience shinglers tend to go at their own pace, which is generally "fast". There's a difference between fast and sloppy/indifferent. If I give you a 10 year warranty on labour and whatever manufacturer warranty on material there's not much to whine about. Im sure you don't complain when your car needs repairs and it's done in a timely fashion. Same thing.
Good job, nice for show, but how long can he work at that speed? He looked like he was tiring out towards the end of the video. Have you ever heard the story about the tortas and the Hare?
Why only 4 nails? Also, I am faster with a gun(6 nails) than this guy is with his hands, and since I manage my air pressure properly in all temperatures, and my air tools and hoses are kept well lubed and in good working order, blow-throughs are uncommon. There is no need to hand-nail anymore. It's a waste of effort, time, and money. Even in the winter. I've been roofing this entire snowy winter with a gun, and I've had no problems.
I agree, here in florida I nail until around noon in the summers and come back around 5-pm and nail until dark. No need for hand nailing. Besides 99% of leaks are flashing details.
If it was my own house and I had all the time in the world to get it done, I'd hand-nail it, sure. As long as I can sip a beer in between bundles and work at a leisurely pace blasting the radio without a care in the world, my boss not hounding me for not getting done 7 squares per man per day tear off, dry in, and shingle, I'd hand-nail that roof. Any mechanic worth his salt keeps his gun and compressor in good working order at all times. If you blow through shingles or shoot low(or high) nails in shingles, that's your dumbass fault. Should have taken better care of your shit.
2 nails short, but definitely quick at the hand bang. Maybe where you are 4 is ok, but in Florida its 6. I miss laying shingles but would not want to do it every day again.
The proper tools can make all the difference. From there it's a matter of proper practice, building skill through repetition. Somebody designed an excellent nail holder, solving a big problem. He's got more nailing to do on every shingle though. I'm sure he knows that.
I have seen a few manage 3-4 square and hour...but most people would prefer a good straight job instead of fast...he is much faster than I ever was but does it look good?
3 nailing, using a shaker . It's tap, slam tap, slam.. in that order. There's always someone faster. He's fast, but I'd be right with him, at least. Been roofing for 26 years, as far as the nail gun comment , Hitachi, 33 square side , I nailed on 25 square in one day. Metal work is where the real money is, flashing chimneys , relining box gutters, soldering, standing seam, fold lock panels.. there's so much more to roofing than nailing shingles on. .
Guys that do this for a living should remember ONE thing. This is a young man's game. You won't want to be doing this when you are 50. Or likely even 40. I garawndamtee.
15 squares a day is average for the best guys in Houston. I once hand nailed 22 squares. The champ was a guy named Melo, with a wino helper he started and finished a house , then started another. 40 squares in two days. The Central American guys have taken it to another level altogether
Any complicated roofs you guys can do? Something more complicated then ideal roof under ideal weather with bunch of helpers and materials being craned on a deck? And 3 nails? We did shingles - easy shit. 2 houses per day with crew of 6... All by hammer too. Anyone can use tin snips?
I've done 24 sq in a day. 8.5 hrs. 7/12 pitch re- roof 1 1/4 nails Hand drive.. I was 19, ...😊 51 now, still squeeze out 12 or 13 in a day still, every now and then. Nail gun now though. 33 yrs still at it.

Murat Sabanovic Bosnjak no you don't. I'm in texas and I always use a nailgun
Logan Smith yeah really. It takes a lot of talent and time to roof as fast as this guy but in the long run it's pretty pointless
this is how every construction job gets done. one guy working, one recording him and about a dozen just standing there trying to look busy
Does he get paid 4x as much?
+Dan Burke YOU BET HE DOES...THE PIECE WORK PAY OUT FOR A SKILLED SHINGLER IS VERY rewarding. sorry for the caps
dam hes fast
+juan aranda That's what she said.
+Warlor Dustin noooooooooooo
When the boss works for 5 mins then expects the same outta you for 12 hrs lol
I seen one guy lay them and another shooting way faster then 3 of them guys .if you do that for a living you should be no brainer fast
It’s like a group project where one person does all the work but everyone puts their name on it.
You call that roofing now try do that with rag slate
Why is this satisfying to watch
The only thing faster is how fast the roofing comes off because it was nailed in quickly and not correctly.
I don't know anything about roofing. However, I do appreciate the man's skill.
5 nail minimum... this roof warranty is void... sure was fast tho o_0
Tom Mann hes doing 8 per shingle!
back in the day , I could lay 20 sq a day with a freaking hatchet !!😎
He’s so fast he put three nails in half the shingle And one nail in the other Half of the single 🤪
get a fucking gun and be faster. absolutely no point in manual nailing. it's 2016...
youd need multiple compressors and guns for this huge crew
lines tangle reloading gun maybe new build and doesnt have power yet so add a genny to run the compressors
hammers and kneepads are cheap
most likely why
Vance S Some roofers over drive the nails with a gun and have poor nail placement. There are advantages to each hand nailed or gun nailed.
There is also gas operated roofing guns no need for compressor at all.
Rest in peace James (Dewayne) Lindamyer) Fastest in my book!
This dude's fast though. Great video
Only 15 square. That's why I work with immigrants. The slowest roofer we have is faster than this guy and puts 5/6 nails
I have ripped 15 sq two layer roof got my own shingles and cleaned up the ground myself in 8 hours . the best dream I ever had lol...roofing is one of the most manual labor there is ..respect..
.
LMAO
All working for 6 dollars a hour. Slave labor
@@lilcourtny08 lmao $350 a day
@@angelmedina3367 sure buddy. No company paying illegals 350 a day. I can make 350 a day at my job an I am not on a damn roof in the summer. Two weeks vacation every year, 401k, insurance, sick time, holiday pay, and guarantee salary all year. Westlake chemical company. I use to work construction and it's not worth the toll on your body. What OSHA violation can you spot. Not a single person tied off on the roof. No fall protection. One person falls off the roof and the company is done. Cheap ass company don't care who falls off a roof and you think they pay 350 a day? Ok illegal immigrant.
17 2/3sq. Hand nailed. Installed the 15# felt by myself. Tossed the shingles up off the back of the stake body truck by myself. 4 sided hip roof house. Ridge caps. 8am-4:30. 1974
I'm sure I'm not the first to say this...I doubt his rows are straight
When you haven't eaten all day and you get your lunch break after you finish your work load.
He's not the fastest lol
good shit bro!! most don't get how hard it actually is to hammer and nail!!
I don't want my roof put on fast. I want my roof put on right!
Same thing.
Right, these guys are just blow and go and will be back in the winter to repair.
I'd rather have someone hand-nail my roof simply because they couldn't cop out and blame their tools if it was fucked.
Gun or hand nailed it would be under warranty if you hired a roofing contractor that was worth anything
I miss laying shingles but would not want to do it every day again.
pro my ass!
The proper tools can make all the difference. From there it's a matter of proper practice, building skill through repetition. Somebody designed an excellent nail holder, solving a big problem. He's got more nailing to do on every shingle though. I'm sure he knows that.
leaky roof in 3 - 4 years... nails are to close to the edge... fast but slow is better as long as u do the job right...
TOO KOO I agree quality not quantity
thank you mexican for making me look good , im not as good on roofs , but I build most of the U.S WALMARTS in 2000 to 2008 steal iron erector ,
I know nothing about roofing, but I keep coming back to roofing videos for the comments
I used to em like that from the pouch we didn't have that fancy nail gizmo 20 years ago lol
Wow all these experts get so upset when they see someone faster than them. Very impressive, I would hire him anyday.
That’s great let him do most of the work…take it easy boys 👌
Yes. He is fast at hand nailing.👏
Bad ass.
I'M FROM TX AND HONESTLY I'VE NEVER SEEN A WHITE BOY WORK LIKE THIS MOST OF US ARE LATINOS. THAT ARE USUALLY THIS FAST. HATS OFF TO THIS GUY
I love how he uses his hammer to line up the shingles before nailing them
I've done 24 sq in a day. 8.5 hrs. 7/12 pitch re- roof 1 1/4 nails Hand drive.. I was 19, ...😊 51 now, still squeeze out 12 or 13 in a day still, every now and then. Nail gun now though. 33 yrs still at it.
Close and mike construction will smoke the roof doctor. Every roof done in a day
It ain't hard to be fast when ya on that cold .. 😂🤣🤣
I worked with 2 guys that would both go out and do a separate 15 sq recover, clean up the trash ,bring the trash back to the yard in the morning dump the trash in the dumpster and do it all again, every day
Was the pneumatic roofing nailer invented at the time of this video? I think we can get his time even faster with one of those.
I'm sure osha loves this 😂
Person getting new roof: I will take the Hare. Thanks.
I think he is using an AJC magnetic head hammer and is very good at placing the nails in the nail zone on the shingle.
Sick with the Hammer!
... but why no guns at all on the job ??
Is that a custom nail tray he's wearing? I feel like getting nails from my pouch to the shingle is where I lose the most time
