Old SAE hp figures and new SAE hp figures can't be compared across the board between all makes. Making a blanket statement that pre-1972 cars don't have their rated hp is simply a fallacy. The very real hp drop in smog era American cars perpetuated the myth. A L24 has every single one of those 150hp. 426 Hemis were rated at 425hp, its more like 490hp. Also the 396 makes 50 hp more than claimed. Carbureted, points ignition cars are easy to tune and easy to make produce more power than what they were rated at stock.
"That is extremely common because you can go from 130 horsepower to about 200. Better compression, a little bit more displacement" When asked about the autonomous bore adjusting carburetor he responds with this " No no no so the 240 is a 2.4L the 280 is a 2.8L if you put carbs on a 280 you get more displacement than if you had the stock carbs on a 240" So the 2.8L block is bigger than a 2.4L block but only if the 280 has a carb and 240 doesn't. Is that what this dude really believes, because he worded that very specifically, to unlock the phantom 0.4L you need a carb. Even though the engine is larger the universe will simply hide the 280's larger displacement essentially turning a 280 into a 240. But if you buy a carb and pray they universe might restore the 280z engine to manufacturer spec.
As he said, he was saying it wrong and couldn't find the right words to describe what he meant. What I think he meant was more fuel/air mix. He's saying you have more fuel/air throughput if you carburate a 280 than if you have a stock carbureted 240 or a stock injected 280.
A couple months ago, my little cousin (fresh out of HS) was given a silver 260Z that was parked in my neighbor's backyard in a shed for 25+ years in exchange for fixing her fence (not a euphemism, ACTUALLY just fixed a picket fence). Him and his dad plan to restore it but it honestly doesn't seem to need THAT much in the context of its age. I'll also try to advise him on how to carry the project out (telling him NOT to 2JZ swap it) even though I'm not much of a Nissan/Datsun guy myself, I respect them but I'm more into late 90's/early 2000's Toyotas and Lexus's.
