The first time I truly understood how important your mental state is in determining success or failure was during my very first pickleball tournament. I made a huge mistake by entering without preparation, picking a partner I had never played with before, and just walking onto the court. I was incredibly nervous, and it showed. Even one of my trainers at the gym told me, "Hey man, you need to calm down a little." Unfortunately, I ended up losing every match, but not by much-just 9 or 10 points each time. That experience still sticks with me, especially on days when I’m not mentally focused. I’ve learned that when I’m not "in the zone," my performance really suffers. Now, I know the importance of mental discipline and consistency. Staying mentally strong, pushing through rough patches during matches, and playing when I’m well-rested make all the difference. It’s all about preparation and mindset.
Perfect timing. I'm recovering from smashing my small two toes into a chair leg in the middle of the night, and missed my league play this week. Hopefully by next Monday the black swollen toes will have healed enough to try these out. Always appreciate your excellent content and congratulations on the win!
Great video. Much needed as there are too many really detailed videos on how to keep the mind clear. My mantra is Goldfish. As in a Goldfish mentality of essentially forget it and remain in the present Great that you mentioned Inner Game of Tennis. It’s a good read. Really talks about the game within the game and how to get over the mindf**k that tennis and very similarly pickleball can be too
@@johnnyguy9442 yeah honestly this summer I was a head case. Even in rec play, my friends had to have that rough conversation with me. The “you have so much potential but you can’t even see your wasting it because of mentality” Then one of them told me about the goldfish. I needed to have that conversation. It turned things around and then some. I’ve really started tapping into my potential. Lots of self reflection too.
Excellent video. The mental game is a constant struggle. I still get upset with bad shots and tournament nerves are a pain. So many good takeaways from this vid. Thanks heaps
Ouch! Stepping all over my toes with these lessons. Just what this player needed to hear, see, and learn. Thank you Coach! Next play… or next video in this case. ❤
Thanks so much Kyle. A super relevant video for me. I most appreciate your enthusiasm and love of the game. I'm a senior, and I play 5 days a week, and it's the absolute best for both physical and mental health.
This is really good. The timeout segment is worth its weight in gold medals. Someone asked for advice for their first tournament just before you released this. It's like you heard him!
your logic is funny af man i love it. The "hero mode" : when you go for that shot that you haven't hit once allll game" sooooo true haha. Anyways, NEXT PLAY!
What did Bobby Jones say about golf? That it's 90% mental and 10% physical? I'm finding the same in pickleball - my mental game is much more important than my physical game. Like most sports, it's usually the player who makes the fewest errors who wins and not the player who hits the most winners. I like the way you've broken the mental errors into categories. And the new graphics on the screen you're using really help me visualize things. Thanks, Kyle.
So, it was just an elaborate ruse to get me to come to the comments looking for the answer to “Why no #8,” enticing me to write a comment and boost your post. Well played, PickleballGuy, well played. 😂 Also, great video, with loads of really useful information. Thanks!
Kyle: You went BEAST MODE at the end of that match! You could see that HUGE adrenaline and hyper focus! Your scale of shot selection part on this video was super and so true! At 4.0 to 4.5 play you don't get very many #9 shots(we call them meatballs) unless you hit a 7 shot to force that meatball.
Great Video! Wow! Great Tech too :) All of this resonated with me, but 1 thing that really stuck out is how my partner and I have often, after saying "ok let's take this thing home, suddenly change up our game to high risk low probablity shots. Like attacking with #3 and #5 shots instead of working for a #7 and then getting that #9. Fighting the emotional roller coaster with breathing and a mantra or action that puts you back in the now and out of the past and future is possibly the most egregious mental error holding many of us back. Thank you Kyle, you absolutely crushed this video!
Your words "Baby Bird" calm me. I get frustrated and tight, I think of something you posted a bit back, "Baby Bird" You said to hold the racket like you are holding a baby bird. This gets me loose again. Very good video!
Great video both content and delivery. The new board and your ability to use it are awesome. Adds a new level to pickleball instructional videos. And I will also ask about #8(which maybe is 'pay attention'? which at my age is much easier than 'remember' 🤪) I will also ask about your Bert at 10-6 or 10-7 i think. What level shot was that, by how much did Lucy miss the counter and what would that have done to the end of the game if she had made it?
I insist on riding the emotional rollercoaster 🎢 , dwelling on points I missed 6 months ago / 6 minutes ago 🤔, just winging it when it comes to placement 🎯 , never taking a timeout 🙅🏻♂️, and doing all kinds of hero shit as I am the main character 🦸🏻♂️. Do you think I should continue watching? I got to your first point of the video and felt personally attacked. 😅
Love the video tips Kyle, killer screen demo!!....one suggestion to consider....ditch the background music...it competes with your voice and message...sound overload...for people like me....mildly adhd the added music is super distracting.
I always think if a team can go on a series of runs, so can we. Me and my partners have come from behind on so many games I can't even count because we literally do not give up.
Oh and this would be a great opportunity for an auto response. You tell us to leave a comment like “number 8” and when we do, an automated response shows up in our private messages along with links or other info you want to share.
Just watched this video before a tournament. I just played the worst 3 games in MONTHS. My serves were horrible, my shot placement was garbage. I have beautiful 3rd shot drops that my partner BOMBED. I tried every mental gymnastic to get out of it. And I couldn’t, so… on the 3rd game in front of everyone. I purposely lost the game. I smashed it into the bleachers, I made no effort to do anything when they served it to me. I even left my hand in my pocket. Needless to say. I backed out of the tournament and quit. Sometimes you just gotta know when to quit.
Yeah, a sore loser and left your partner with a quitter. No thanks. If it’s open play finish the game and go home. You if it’s a tournament you paid to play. Give it your best shot and don’t quit, don’t purposely let se, don’t quit until over. Then go home. 😡🤬😖😤😡
could someone explain why the umpire thought it was a fault? buddy was not in the kitchen when he volleyed. What was the rule that was supposed to have been broken?
Thanks mate for very helpful tips. I play well in any sport when I'm happy, relaxed and just having fun. I have learned to shut down those negative things out of my mind when I play.
If it was indeed a foot fault, it would be because one or both feet were in the kitchen and then not re-established outside the kitchen before jumping and volleying.
I’ve been playing ranked matches a lot lately, and recently got completely blown out. Mentally, I got blown out as well. I think this video will help me get over the hump when I get behind in points. Thanks.
I will tell you exactly what happened. 9-6 foot fault. Kyle’s basketball “HOOPER” brain kicked in. I’m not saying other sports aren’t like this but there’s something about a hooper when one little thing happens and you just flip the switch.

I come here expecting for a nice list and you give me empty number 10 and for number 8 I have to ask in the comments?!!?!?
I want to get good enough to where mental mistakes come into play. But seriously.....Novak Djokovic, who knows a bit about winning, says the difference between great players and struggling players is that great players get pissed about bad points, but snap out of it quickly. ruclips.net/video/VQGv6PzWrEs/видео.html
You really should stop talking about that foot fault. It is very clearly a foot fault. I'm a ref. There's no doubt. Slowed to 0.25 and you don't get reset from stepping on the line until 6 frames after you hit the ball.
Kyle is the real deal. I am seeing and playing the game at a different level since enrolling in That Pickleball Skool.

Before the video I was convinced that playing smarter was the key to getting to a higher level. This confirms my thoughts. Nicely put together Kyle.☺

GREAT stuff Kyle. When I have a lousy day on the court, these are the things I do wrong. But when I breath and thing of the positive I do better.

I always think if a team can go on a series of runs, so can we. Me and my partners have come from behind on so many games I can't even count because we literally do not give up.
Well said!!
That’s the key!
But Kyle, you went into 'Hero Mode' with a Bertie when they had match point. Odds of missing that shot are super high.
Nice board work! (From an old educator)
Thanks!!
Why no 8?!?!
Great video and good timing - my wife and I have been repeatedly discussing target focus, shot selections, and hero shots.
This was a great video! I even took notes! Now …. I’m trying to find that 8. Are you tricking us?

Hahah the board is pretty sweet!
Good vid but the music was a tad loud.
Touch screen is a great add.
dang it! great feedback. There's such a balance to nail the music. I'll work to make that better in the next video :)
With the new volley rules, that wouldn't be a foot fault even though it looked like it was with the old rules.
I got a 10/10 so I thought that no matter what you answered you got a 10/10 and you were just trolling lol
