    Did Husak fluently speak German?

      Gustav Husák was originally lawyer and I guess basic knowledge of German language was normal at that time. There was dignity in his behaviour.

      @Jerry V Yes, almost 10 years, almost victim (capital punishment) of fabricated court tirials in 50's.

      Of course he spoke fluent German
      When he was young, his birthplace was bilingual- at least all people who were educated spoke fluently German and mostly Hungarian in Bratislava at that time
