  • In today’s video, we're showcasing our top list of some of the world’s best multihull sailing yachts you can buy over $500,000 and under $1 million, including their current list price and features. This is the second part of a new series on the best multihulls under different price points. Watch until the end to see the best yacht on our list!
    Multihull yachts have enjoyed an increasing demand in the sailing world in response to their wide variety of advantages. They are larger, more stable, and have ample living spaces compared to monohulls with comparable prices. There is of course plenty of negative talk about catamarans, but the twin-hull design actually performs better against head seas compared to most monohulls.

      Not really performance cats (even the Outremer is not) . The fastest cat under 1 million is surely the ORC 50 (previously Marsaudon Composites TS 5 ) : hits 30 knots ! For less money you can buy the ORC 42 which would beat your whole top 5 as it both won the Rolex Fastnet race and set a record of 10 days in the ARC rally !

    Have you ever sailed the 1600 seawind?
    Number 2 has the worst ever weather helm I have ever seen! Even experienced by top sailmakers left scratching their heads!
    6 auto pilots in first year and 3 rudders combinations! Even has weather helm just with the screecher up with no main or boards! Loved to know if you did a sea trial before nominating this Cat! Hopefully they have now worked out what went wrong with number 2!

      @@AORD72 I believe the comment regarding weather helm wasn't about the helm being in the weather, but rather the sailing balance where the boat tends to turn toward the wind direction. That imbalance creates more rudder load, and constant effort for steering by hand or be autopilot. I'd be very interested to know if this problem was addressed by Seawind.

    can you say "subjective"??!!
    it would great to see them sailing at the same time in the same conditions. this video talks about features.... but these are sail boats so wouldn't it be nice to be able to compare their sailing characteristics with objective data?
    with so many choices, does seawind really deserve to have two entries? Lagoon, Leopard, Catana to name a few...

    The Excess 15 seems to be a great compromise on sailing characteristics and living space with nice features. I'd be looking for a cat that's not particularly fast, but behaves well in rough seas and can sail a good angle against the wind. Don't need the real hole bunch of luxury but most of the usual features including lots of storage for real bikes in transport hardcases and dive compressor. A large solar array and no generator. A helm up with an hardtop like the Lagoon 450 has, as an alternative the helm of the Leopard 44. An cockpit save of waves from aft or salon doors safe against flooding. A high build quality with Kevlar reinforced hulls against collisions, light and strong but with quite some payload. There's none such design on the market. The existing ones seem to be whether fast and quite uncomfortable to sail on long passages or with quite bad sailing characteristics. I wonder if the fitting of hydraulic daggerboards into the keels and fully battened main sails would make the difference to update a cruising cat like a Leopard 44.

      @HarbourMastersTV  3 года назад

      You’ve raised some fine points there! Definitely a great laundry list of necessary features. Personally, I feel more secure with hydraulic daggerboards on fast and larger rigs, but I’m not experienced at all with custom builds. Thanks for sharing!

      I recommend you to check out the new Seawind 1370 - the price is climbing a bit but there is a considerable customization capability for a rig which is the sweet spot between performance and luxury .

      Hidraulic daggerboards and full batten sail will not make the difference, different catamarans are designed for different purposes, the hull cross section, the weight of the vessel, both empty and full load, are more relevant then let's say fixed keel or daggerboards. Every design is a compromise between speed, internal space and how much you can load it before it loses speed, you can not have all at the same time. The only way to cheat about this is to spend more money, a lot more. The massive use of carbon fiber, in the hulls and in the mast, helps in having a light boat, so a boat that you can load more, having a longer boat, let's say 60 feet instead of 50, allows to have more internal space without having fat hulls. I don't have to say how much more an all carbon fiber 60" costs compared to a Lagoon or similar 50", set your budget and chose the vessel that has the right type of compromise that you need, without hoping that battens on the main sail can make miracles, even the daggerboards will mainly only let you point a little better and have a little less drift, will not completely change the character of the boat, if is designed for space and load capacity will not become a fast boat just because of the daggerboards.

    • @andreachinaglia5804
      @andreachinaglia5804 2 года назад +1

      by the way lots of storage for real bikes in transport hardcases is not really needed, a real bike can be quite light if you go for an aluminium or even better carbon fiber frame and takes little storage space as long as you remove the wheels before you store it, thing that can be done in a very short time if it has that quick release nuts, you can have custom storage hardcases for the frames only, with the handlebar folded to be in line with the frame, you can also have pedals that fold, the hardcase this way is relatively small and you can find a place in most of the catamarans and still have your bike ready for riding it in a very short time, only few minutes once you have gone trough the procedure a few times. also the diving equipment is not a big problem, the compressor is heavy, but will not overload your vessel. But if you want to have a premium big tender with big engine and diving equipment and real bikes and maybe paddle boards and kite surf boards and some other toy then you will need a boat with a lot of storage space and load capacity. I was talking about how every boat is a compromise, but somehow you are part of the compromise, you have to make choices and give priorities, a larger boat can be a solution, ie Knysna makes beautiful catamarans that are more towards the semi custom then the mass production, but are sold at a very competitive price if you consider that come equipped with everything that is needed, from the navigation instruments and auto pilot up to the washing machine, are longer then the boats you named so are at least as fast and have more storage space being bigger, but a bigger boat means higher docking and maintenance cost and short handed is more tiring, everything is heavier and bigger, and to have electric winches is useful, but will not change that to manage a spinnaker that is 30% bigger and heavier can be a problem for a little crew.
