My wife works there..came across this video. We keep that black cat, George, every winter while Berkeley is closed. When you said “that cat just bit me”..we had to laugh! That’s our George..
I’ve always wanted to visit this house. I read somewhere that there had been an interior fire in this house and the original staircases were changed when repairs were carried out. It’s a beautiful property. Thank you.
Great video. Berkeley plantation started out as a land grant in 1618 that became a little colony Berkeley Hundred named after Richard Berkeley who was one of its investors along with his cousin Sir William Throckmorton (brother-in-law of Gov. Thomas Dale) and several others. The Berkeleys and Throckmortons were cousins to Gov. William Berkeley and my Jamestown ancestor Col. Thomas Ligon whose wife Mary Harris’ family lived at Curles Neck not too many miles from Berkeley.
I worked there for a while and was part of establishing the Taps Monument, stair plantings and the like. Mr. Jamieson was a fine a man as I have ever worked for. He got me started in historic admiration of the buildings of the Berkeley era. Told me once" I started working the place with a mule and now I ride around in an air conditioned tractor". Trust me, he was a hands on guy. Also said his wife said Berkeley was his mistress. He said that is better than a real one. 🦇
I liked this one. The house looks like William Penns. Same style as Logans house Stenton. That cats not crazy looking. He needs attention. I loved the show, Turn, Washingtons Spies. Excellent series. We did need bug spray at Jamestown in June, many years ago. How come the video cuts off? It doesn't seem to end right.
I toured Shirley (my mother's name) and Berkeley, in the 1970s. Actually met Mr and Mrs Jamieson. He was gardening, and collected my money, and she gave me the house tour!

My mother middle name is Harrison, she says that we were from the Benjamin Harrison of Virginia line. Perhaps we're related.

Sounds like I need to visit William Penn’s house. Yeah this was one of my first videos before my editing got better.
My friends ancestors were enslaved on that land. I’m going to go pay my respect on Sunday.
