I think she needs to work harder on paying off her student loans. Only $300 a month? She could easily do 600 - 1k. If she did 1k a month she could pay it off in under 5 years.
Faith Kings She’s only 27 years old and has two jobs in the tech industry that she enjoys, bought a house, has 3 real estate rental income streams (spare bedroom, basement and garage), rents her car out, has 2 Roth IRA’s, a high yield savings account and plans to buy another property. @@JCizzleSoCal She doesn't have two Roth IRAs, that wouldn't make any sense. She has a Roth 401K and a Roth IRA. Why is it an issue? You don't have the whole picture. By that I mean you don't know the terms of the loan or interest rate. Aggressively paying off the loans may not be the best decision for her right now.
If the interest on her saving and investment is higher than the interest of the debt there is no reason to pay off early, also not to mention the tax deductions she can claim annually.
I paid my loans off slowly over time because I looked at it like I could make more of a return on my own with throwing all that cash on low interest rate students loans. My 401k averages around 10% a year, so I’m already ahead of the game when I put a big chunk of money in there every week.
My brother in law just got into electricians union a year ago and he’s making close too 100k a year and he’s only 26! Good for you Jamal. It’s an awesome career. Good luck 👍🏼🍀

@@anaadventures7669 She's buying security by paying off the mortgage first. Stocks average 6-7% returns each year, assuming good diversification and a good year. With a monthly student loan payment of $262, her interest rate is probably about 4.5%. If she invests the money that she would have put towards student loans, she'll have about a 1.5-2.5% spread between her investments and student loan debt, which is based on average market returns. This spread is beneficial only if she can make returns above her student loan interest, which might be hard across 13 years. Also, if she pays off the mortgage in 3 years or less, she'll stockpile cash quickly and can invest that or cover those costly home repairs that she mentioned in the video.
@@anaadventures7669 haha that's not what I said at all. I understand your point--she could invest the money she would have paid towards student loans. My point is that there's more risk in doing so across 13 years because her income could change. If that happened or if she lost her job, it would be far easier to stop investing than it would be to stop loan payments to a creditor.
This is the video I never knew I needed. I have a MS degree in Information Systems, but unfortunately I have no money, but I want to take my Comptia A+ and Comptia security + so that I can also get into Cyber security. Thanks for the inspiration.
That’s what I thought too. Better to pay it off upfront because you never know what could happen. Could loose that good job and then have to defer and end up owing more. Plus the interest accrued over 13 years would add so much more to the principle. She’ll probably realize that soon and pay off the debt. Doesn’t matter if you save 55k, if you owe 55k ur net worth is going to be 0!
She has goals, she has things to do with that $, if she strictly paid off the loan, she most likely wouldn't own her own house or have much in retirement (compounding interest). If she didn't have the house she wouldn't have over 1k a month, that's 12k a year plus principal pay down. Using loans correctly to leverage your $ is important, she's doing it correctly as long as she's got goals. If she's letting it sit in a savings account, then she should pay them off. But I think she wants to buy another house, then she would rent out her current house and make even more $.
She’s most likely paying the interest. She could pay the loan off in one go, or invest that money into a lucrative venture. It’s not always smart to pay off all your loans. Also, it could help build your credit.
Is it just me who feels like she doesn’t understand that she’s earning a lot like guys? Six figures is a lot for one person. And she’s saving a lot like 1/3 of her income
@@SK-mr6ov It really is a lot. I don't understand the hoity toity people who think it's not. Statistically she's crushing the median household all by herself. Could she save more? Probably, but most Americans don't save anywhere near 1/3 their income. Her case is a triumph.
KalbiKing I agree she is doing really well, but not well enough to where she should start spending all of it yet. The median household income shouldn’t be something you compare yourself to if you wanna be financially independent. So yes 112k is a lot for the avg but it’s not a lot for people who want to be wealthy. So saving and investing should be her first priority, not spending.
Wow, Gabriela. Your story is amazing, I'm a mexican millenial living in Logan Square. I felt the need to say that because I find myself relating with you so much! You're story is so inspirational. Latina girl Magic.
GameFuMaster I would agree if the plan was to pay it off in like 2-3 years. But the issue is 13 years is wayy too long and way too risky. She should be the first to realize that money is never guaranteed considering what she went through, so relying on her current situation to make plans THIRTEEN years into the future is a mistake. So many things can happen that may cause her to not have money to pay her debt down, so its better to pay that off as quick as possible just in case. Plus the difference between her interest rate and the returns is likely not that big. Student loans tend to be around 5% interest rate, and average stock market returns are (based on different sources) 7-10%. When you adjust for inflation, that’s not a big enough gap to risk not paying the debt down
Depends on how much interest plus student tax deductions. Pay student debt after investment falls below interest rates. Actually I say I have 0 student debt because I can pay it off whenever... But I have a 3k 3.4% loan I pay min 50 per month. Helps with credit score plus. I can generate 4%+ per yr in interest at credit unions free money and tax deductions from student loan effective rate us 3%.
Dawn Raquel How can she pay off 55,000 in student loans in 1 year? After taxes, she makes about $82,000 . After that she has to pay her $1,700/month mortgage and her other expenses like food and utilities. So, how can she possibly do that?
This was an excellent story! She tore me up 😢 when she spoke about her Dad. She’s a smart girl and I like that she has a healthy balance of saving and spending. I hate when ppl claim to never buy anything.
I know few friends pulling over $100k+ per year, but not really happy and stressed in general. Another set of friends, making around $35K a year seem to be content with life. I guess that’s what matters the most....being happy at the end of the day!!
PetieD 7 I agree. I have to say that my manager makes $130k a year and only has 1 job. But he works 60-70 hour weeks and most of the time doesn’t take a lunch break or takes vacation. And yes he has a family. I’m fortunate that I can just hit my hours, eat lunch every day and go home on time as a salaried employee. Not everyone gets that luxury making over 100k
gavip24 ....unfortunately putting 60-70+ hours in making $130K may not be an ideal pay anymore since these hours are equivalent of two worker bees making $65K, or making under $40/hour for the accountability and/or responsibility of the position. Furthermore, the work-life balance is obviously non existence anymore especially when one has a family. Although, if your manager works only 37.5 to 40 hours per week, than s/he is in a GOOD position!! Just my $0.02 cents.
I would NEVER want my parents to pay for anything. They need to concentrate on their own retirement instead of trying to leave me something or sacrificing their future..I have more years I hope than they do. Most of the people profiled on Millenial Money are making more than the mean income. For Americans age 25-34, the mean salary is $806.75 per week or $41,951 per year. "Living On $112K A Year" means she is doing very well and not the average millennial.

Alison Rotzien if she works for her local government she might be in a loan-forgiveness plan in which after 10 years of working in that position, her loans will be forgiven. So she probably pays low amounts/ minimum amount since they will eventually be forgiven anyways. 😊
For the same reason that you don't pay off home loans in 10years... paying in 13 years helps her saving/spending/invest more money on a monthy basis. Paying it in 2 years would make the monthly payments high. If the interests are low the difference isnt that big.
Yeah, I don't understand why she's dragging it out. Sounds like her goal to save up for another property is taking precedence over paying off the debt. She owns a home already, so I would focus on paying off the debt asap if I were her.
@@kristin7777 My understanding that her job was a separate corporation that got a contract with the government, not working directly for the government, but if that's the case I can understand why. Good point
@@MrVasco9999 Depending on where you get student loans, the interest can be killer. My interest on student loans is 3x higher than my mortgage. And as she said home repairs are costly, if something big where to break and need fixing in one or even both homes, it would be nice to have extra cash to put towards it, instead of having to balance it between debts. I’m very proud of her....she’s making a lot for her age....since she has saved for emergency she should actually be able to pay off her student loan in less than 2 years....it makes no sense to pay off in 13.....she could throw almost half her salary towards that debt and be done by 30....

Wow shes doing amazing! That multiple sources of income is an inspiration.
Great girl but she's working hard not smart.
Sounds like she’s working pretty smart to me!
Faith Kings any tips?
@@JCizzleSoCal She doesn't have two Roth IRAs, that wouldn't make any sense. She has a Roth 401K and a Roth IRA.
She's over the income limit for a traditional IRA so a Roth IRA makes sense, but at her income it makes a lot more sense to invest in a traditional 401K, or at least split between a traditional 401K and Roth IRA.
@@JCizzleSoCal And she's working her butt off, missing out on life. Sorry but she's working, not living. In her later years she will regret having spent her prime years of life working two jobs, and not doing something more meaningful. I don't understand people like you and her. When you're old you're more likely to be plagued by health problems etc and won't be able to enjoy money as much as when you're younger. Idiots.
Wow, she makes more than she needs but still has a weekend job because she enjoys it - that’s what I call winning at life
Smart, don't have kids! You can accomplish a lot by taking care of yourself first! It's not selfish.
I could supplement my income working weekends but I’d spend less time with my kids, so Pass! But yeah take advantage of all that when you’re single

I think she needs to add more money to payoff her student loans faster.
Agreed! Even if she halfed the amount of money she put in her savings, she'd still being doing amazing.
I think she’s paying off her loans over time because her interest is super lower and whenever you can borrow money for almost no money it’s better to pay it back in small amounts and keep more liquidity for investments where her money will grow faster
@@LKevin213 she does not know what would happen in 13 yrs....job loss. Medical problems, bad economy etc etc. She has the money to axe it now. You shouldn't bank on the future stability for something that can easily be taken care of now

Mistake. You can deduct the interest from your taxes and invest what you would have payed. Also she works for the govt so there might be loan forgiveness after a certain number of years of service.
dothedeed interesting I need to look into that. Thank you
@@dothedeed Loan forgiveness doesn't apply to tech jobs. It's for public interest roles. Even that is hard to come by nowadays because of this administration. Less than 1% who apply actually get their loans forgiven.

13 years to pay off her student loans?! girl you can get rid of them in under two years with your income.
Maybe she got a loan that charges you a fee if you pay off more than agreed upon
The interests rate is probably low. If that is the case there's no point in paying them off right away

My only issue is that she should focus more on paying off that debt with that great income.
The debt could have a low-interest rate, like three percent, and maybe she wants more cash on the side, just in case she loses her job.
I agree
I paid my loans off slowly over time because I looked at it like I could make more of a return on my own with throwing all that cash on low interest rate students loans.
My 401k averages around 10% a year, so I’m already ahead of the game when I put a big chunk of money in there every week.

She owes $55,000 in student loans, makes $112,000 a year, and expects to pay them off in 13 years? Those should be paid off in 3 years max
Lol like wtf right...n renting stuff out lol
why would she pay that off quickly if her interest rate on that is lower than what she would get back if she invested it?
@@StevonStevons exactly she's paying herself first/investing before tackling the low interest student loan debt. you said it yourself.
She is awesome. Intelligent, ingenious, and hard working.
I'm very proud of this fellow Chicagoan. She turned childhood trauma and abandonment into fuel for success.

TDre do you have LinkedIn? I’m the girl in the video and I have an idea for you!
@@gavip24 Hi Gabriela! Great minds think alike. lol. I actually just sent you a message via Linkedln.
I don't understand why she doesn't pay off her college debt immediately instead of accruing interest over 13 years??? so confused.
i thought same thing... she could pay that off in 1-2 years if she wanted.
She’s probably making more money investing the money she’d use to pay it off
She’s most likely paying the interest.
It’s really not that much, saving 1/3 of your income should be the the goal, maybe even 50%.
KalbiKing 200k should be her next goal

Her dad is so wild wow. But she killing the game 🤝🤝
I have one word to explain this girl in every aspect in life "smart"!
Wow she doesnt even realize she can pay off her student loan in 1 year
Dawn Raquel I KNOW RIGHT!!
depends on her leverage. If she her investments are higher than her interest rate on her loans, of course she should pay it off slowly.
This chick is a reminder of how bad I’ve flopped for the past 15 years 🤦♂️
I know few friends pulling over $100k+ per year, but not really happy and stressed in general.

Idk, her but I genuinely liker her she seems like such a humble girl with so much going for her.💕
Why on earth would you take so long to pay off student loans especially when you could pay it off in 2 years easily??
Makes enough money and lives rather frugally to keep that much debt around

That deal still exists...$1 a month is still an option for “new” subscribers. If you create a new account with a different email, you can get the deal.
She probably get perks
I’m very proud of her....she’s making a lot for her age....since she has saved for emergency she should actually be able to pay off her student loan in less than 2 years....it makes no sense to pay off in 13.....she could throw almost half her salary towards that debt and be done by 30....
