    NPC can miss so defense is always good even for PVE, is just not a big concern to build around it but is always good to have some defense.
    Even more when on advanced or elite each hit from the enemies can damage you pretty badly. Especially torpedoes and how Cryptic never ever addressed correctly how bad the engine renders all the torpedoes on the screen and you end up being hit all the time by "ghost torps" that you can't see coming therefore you can't do much to actively avoid them. So a bit of defense to passively make them miss you is nice.

    I do a lot of wonky builds and my effort at max resistance was pretty disappointing as at 80% a +30% damage resistance console provides 0 additional damage resistance.
    Shield hardness was more effective when maxed out. That ship takes no damage to shields. Effectively invulnerable. Then you get hit by something that bypasses shields and instant kaboom.

    The Subspace Field Modulator comes from the episode "Skirmish" which is the first mission of the Spectres arc. You have to be Level 65 to access this story chain and it is on the Available tab. Skirmish is an essential mission once you can take it. It gets you the SFM and it unlocks the Alhena sector patrol which is where you unlock Deuterium Surplus batteries.
    On the whole, I like everything you said here. Survivability is as important as DPS to me. I am so glad you mentioned that, despite the diminishing returns, Resistance is important. Not everybody runs in a team with a decent tank to draw threat, so running with too little resistance is a recipe for frustration. There are many ways to build that resistance but for the budget conscious, the Hull Plating skill is an excellent foundation.
    I have a massive Shield Regen build that also is fairly competent at putting DPS out. Totally not meta but I can pull a good 80-85k in ISA with it. Since you mentioned it. :)

      @@nolgroth yeah. I was thinking he would need to divide them up. At the very least into weapon related (dmg, crit, pen etc), survivability related (hull, shields, resistances, heals etc) and science related (epg, drain, control, etc.)

    Great video, have been playing this game for few years now but it's still good to stumble upon something you didn't now about so again thank's :)
    As for video itself, If I recall correctly In hangar area of Embassy or in fleet research lab, there were option to buy both threat nullifying and threat magnifying science consoles, not sure if in today's game there are worth something but it's always an option to boost or nullify threat. Another thing that might be useful for aux heavy builds - you can use one of space reputation slots for 'auxiliary defensive configuration' from tier 4 Tholian reputation, if your build utilizes a lot of auxiliary power than this single passive can boost all your resistances by 10, or maybe even more, percents.

  • @raijinmeister
    @raijinmeister 3 года назад +3

    Hahaha, at this point Cryptic should just turn the "Subspace field modulator" into a built-in ability for all the ships. It's a must-have for over a decade now, no matter the build.

    • @IAmTheRealBill
      @IAmTheRealBill 3 года назад +2

      Makes sense. Basic rule of thumb for good game development is that if you have something that everyone takes, it is either OP or filling a critical gap so should be built in.

  • @manictiger
    @manictiger 2 года назад

    I like using a combo of extreme speed, evasive abilities, lower threat, invulnerabilities (including pilot skills) secondary shield buffs, and relatively healthy hull strength. It has no staying power, but as long as it's moving and being used intelligently, it zips in, kills a bunch of stuff, zips out and usually stays at max hull the entire time. Occasionally something hits like a truck and I have to use the singularity shield to save my butt. Still working on the build, but it's really fun. Just needs more crit chance stuff, a few hard-to-get consoles, and eventually, maxed out MkV everything.

      @@MCStu just want your input about the promo ship event choice coming up. I’ve narrowed it down after much thought. It’s down to the Inquiry and the last minute leader, the Vulcan Jellyfish. I was going to go with the Inquiry, which is a solid choice but I already own ships that fill that roll. So now the jellyfish really caught my eye as something different to fly and I want a science ship. So I bought the D’Kyr and some other ships as testbeds. I usually survive okay in any space map; ground maps though sometimes I just get destroyed and i have been trying to play through the iconian war and I get dropped there by minor enemies lol! I tried changing my away crew to have more heals and an engineer but I need a way to get good gear for them cheap

    • @PandaPowerable
      @PandaPowerable 3 года назад +3

      Run the Temporal Front mission eight times and then all your away team will have the Nakura gear set.

    • @nolgroth
      @nolgroth 3 года назад +1

      If you are not running the Commando spec on the Ground, you should give it a try. Once you get the Juggernaut systems going, you get a fair bit tougher. It is a pain in the posterior to constantly remember to switch Specializations, but it might be what the doctor ordered.
      Other things, like Bailey mentioned are having the Nakuhl shield from Temporal Front, getting the Pahvan Healing Crystal (Illusion of Communication) for each member of the away team AND getting/slotting the Emergency Medical Hologram from the Delta Quadrant mission. Between those three (Commando spec, Nakuhl Shield, and Pahvan Healing Crystal [for each away team member]), you should boost your Survivability a lot.
      As an additional step, train a Boff in Command spec and run the following abilities on that Boff; Take Cover I, Hammer & Anvil II, Strategic Analysis II, & Return Fire II. The Specialization Qualification can either be crafted, if your Command spec (not Commando) is high enough. If not, they usually run a couple hundred thousand EC on the Exchange. The other abilities all can be easily gotten from the Boff trainer on your homeworld or in the Ops center of DS9.
      RUclips has been deleting my posts with links in them, but if you head over to reddit (/r/stobuilds), the Wiki has a section called Team Space Princess Ground Guides. Just read the article titled "Basic Away Team Setup Guide" and adjust from there. I don't follow it to the letter but it has some good information in it. Certainly a place to start.
      Good luck.
      EDIT: And the Romulan Imperial Navy set (Armor/Shield) from Uneasy Allies is perhaps easier to get and still really good. The Nakuhl shield is better overall, but that mission is...trying.

      @@nolgroth @Bailey Thanks for the tips. So. I've just been a casual player, i'm a Fleet Admiral, not sure what tier my ships are, or how to find out. But one thing i do know, is that i get my ass kicked every time i get into space combat. Doesn't matter what ship i've got. My Defiant class gets wasted facing a Galor class ship without even scratching the surface of the Galor. How do i build my ship to hold out and do some damage in a fight?

    This is all well and good, but the reputation system only comes available at level 50. Then you still have to grind out all the different reps. You cant just use it at level 10 or so... Its far to easy to talk if you have everything, but for the players that don't, its not that easy to come by.... This is not an insult, its an observation. I play for about a year now, and i do not know half of what there is to know. Or how to get it. for instance, I have Bridge offices that have the second tier slot unlocked, but only their default abilities can be used, not the ones i bought for them for that tier.
    WHY ?...No one answers those issues. I watch a lot of your video's, and i like them, and i learn a lot of you, which is why i am subscribed, but sometimes i get the feeling you pass by too easily on how difficult STO actually is for relative beginners. not even to mention new players. There are players that do NOT have everything. or know how to get it, or simply cant afford them. Its really great to see what you have, and i wish i had it all... But even if i am a life time subscriber, and spend thousands of Euro's on STO already, i still do not have half of what you have. and thus i simply can not do what you ask. And if you only have 120 EC. can only fly warp 5.. 'Tour of the galaxy' wont get you enough EC if they only give you 5000 EC per system. Know what i mean ?...
    All i want to say is that its not so easy as you sometimes make it out to be for a "Beginner" Which i definitely am, even after more then a year of play. Example ?... I want to give my ground weapon to one of my other Characters. NOPE cant.. 'bound to character" Okay, how to get another one ?... Lobi store, how do i get Lobi ?... open lock-boxes. Cant, i need keys.. you must buy, with real money. Ohhhh, thats why it was "character bound' i get it. and so on. Not everything is easy to come by, MR STU... But don't worry, i love your video's anyway, and ill keep watching them all.. just wanted to vent a bit, because sometimes, i understand why STO only has 2000 consistent players...
