    This is the second Arti-facts video I've watched. These are by far the best art documentaries I've seen in a very long time. I've read a lot of material on Magritte and Hopper, and there were many surprises in paintings I'd never seen before, and information in their biographies that gave me a deeper understanding of their lives.

    The Image at 21.10 is NOTHING to do with sexual frustration. It is to do with with the haunting fact that Magritte's mother was taken from the river , where she committed suicide, with her wet nightdress covering her face.! Hence his MANY images of covered faces in many different contexts.

      That view is disputed. Apparently Magritte was not present when his mother's body was recovered, so he could not have seen her with her nightdress over her face.

      @@arti-facts-4u It is indeed disputed. If he did witness the recovery of her body (as some have stated) and saw her cloaked face, it would have been a traumatic and idelible memory. Note that many of his paintings feature a masked or obscured face. Note ;also the title of the painting: The Lovers. His parents were obviously deeply unhappy,...
