  • How To Use Your Oxygen Concentrator - Oxygen Assistant
Today you’re going to get all your questions about the Philips Respironics EverFlo Concentrator answered.
In case you are using another model of stationary oxygen concentrator, the information here will likely cover everything you need to know to operate your machine safely and effectively.
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your concentrator is a minimum of 6 to 12 inches away from any walls, curtains, furniture or anything else that could restrict the airflow to the concentrator.
Your oxygen concentrator needs adequate airflow to pull in air and concentrate the oxygen.
Also make sure there are no clothes, towels or anything else on the concentrator that could cover the vents on the back and impede the airflow.
Now you’re ready to plug the concentrator in and turn it on. On the Respironics EverFlo the on/off switch will most likely be on the upper left top area of the concentrator.
When you turn it on 3 lights will illuminate for up to a few seconds and you’ll here the high pitch alarm for a second or 2. If everything is working correctly the green light will remain on but the other 2 lights, one red and one yellow, will shut off and the high pitch from the alarm will be silent (cease).
If the yellow light stays on, along with the alarm beeping periodically and a flashing red light, there are a few things that could be wrong.
1st check to make sure there is nothing blocking the airflow into the concentrator. Move it away from anything close to it, or remove anything, like clothing, towels, etc. covering any of the vents on the machine.
If that doesn’t solve the problem check to make sure none of your hoses are kinked.
Lastly make sure your flow meter knob isn’t completely turned off. Turn it counter clockwise until the ball is centered on the recommended liters per minute flow we talk about here, or that your doctor recommended.
One of the above actions should get your concentrator working normally again, but if it doesn’t turn the machine off and give us a call.
If the red light stays illuminated after a few seconds and the alarm keeps going, you’ll want to unplug the concentrator for about 5 minutes and replug it in. If this doesn’t solve the problem try a different outlet. This will usually solve the problem. Give us a call if it doesn’t.
Now that you’ve got your machine turned on and all is working the way it’s supposed to, you’ll want to attach your nasal cannula to the oxygen outlet port, extension tubing that’s already connected to the outlet port, or the bubble humidifier if you have one and want to use it. We’ll go over these options below.
The oxygen outlet port is the little nozzle that’s most likely located around the upper left front side of the machine if you’re using the Philips Respironics EverFlo.
The 1st option is to use the oxygen concentrator without the humidifier. If that’s what you want to do, simply connect the tubing on your nasal cannula to the oxygen outlet port, insert the 2 prongs of the nose piece into your nose, and put the tubing around your ears. If you haven’t done this before, refer to the image on this page, or see it in the video.
You can wrap the tubing around your ears in a way that the tubing is behind your head or in front of your body. If you’re lying down you’ll want to wrap it so the tubing going back to the oxygen concentrator is in front of your body.
You can also use the concentrator together with another person. To do that, connect the extension tubing you have directly to the oxygen outlet port, or the bubbler depending on whether you are using the bubble humidifier or not.
Then connect the Y splitter to the other end of the extension tube, and connect your nasal cannulas to the 2 ends of the Y spitter. When connecting all of your tubing you don’t need to force anything in real tight. Just make sure each piece is snuggly inserted into the corresponding port, splitter or extension you are using.
Please pay special attention to the section of this video where we speak about Choosing The Correct Liter Per Minute Flow For You!

My goodness I'm so glad I found your video. My mother was just discharged from the hospital with covid and because of quarantine they were not able to really go over how to use this machine with me when I picked her up to come home. They said to call the number on the machine but I'm more of a visual or hands on learner so I thought to search youtube. So glad you thought to put this info out there for the inexperienced folks like myself. Bless you!

Your video is the only one that explains the yellow light. Thank you. Also if you live with several indoor dogs dust can be a problem. I use canned air to blow out the vents on the back from time to time.

Thanks for the description. I have a doubt.
You said ideal level is 1.5 L.
My sister is in oxygen support, and even after keeping at 4L with this same product, Oxygen level is only 85-90.
Do we need to increase the level - to 3 or 4 litres per minute - if the patient's oxygen level comes down drastically?
That is, more points means more oxygen?
Or less level gives more oxygen?
    Need your clarification ASAP. Thanks.

The manufacturers never state that attaching a bubble humidifier will reduce the flow rate down a notch. I am prescribed 10LPM but if I attach the humidifier, all O2 concentrators max out at 5 (for 10L models) and 4.5 (for 5L models like the EverFlo Q) so I just use the EverFlo Q instead of my backup 10L O2 concentrator since it sounds like a window air conditioner. Is this normal?
Also, my bubble humidifier does not bubble like that. Is there a special humidifier I need to purchase?

Ok the red light is a unit malfunction and the yellow light is a low oxygen output issue. The yellow light will come on if the O2 output is less then 82% I beleive. I dont think the lights will come in if it is blocked in the back but I'm not sure. If the red light comes on then there is an issue with the PCA or the computer. Or a low air pressure issue. Not trying to be disrespectful but I heard what you said about the lights and you where kind of off. If there are alarms going off on the unit then you should definitely call your dealer or get a tech to look at it for you. Most of the time it isnt a simple repair

It's different than an oxygen tank. It actually pulls and filters the oxygen from the surrounding air. As long as it is functioning propery..I don't think they run out.
There is an easy filter in the compartment behind power switch.
Should be changed when needed (I've read 2 years) they are on Amazon..starting around 6.00.
I hope this was the info you were asking for!
