Great video! I've been working on a tax mod for Crusader Kings 2, and this really reaffirms my commitment. Currently I've modelled both land taxes and poll taxes.
I know this video is already 3 years old, but may I suggest/request the addition of closed captions for the hard of hearing? I understand if that's a bit much to ask. Thank you anyway!
Hey, sorry for not having done it earlier. I'm working on adding captions to my videos at the moment and will go back and add them to my older videos as well but might take a while to get them all updated. I've added them to this video now.
@@KobeanHistory That’s very sweet of you! I understand backtracking your old videos is a lot of work, so I really appreciate you trying to get it done.
I don't think there was a standard amount and it could vary from region to region and throughout time. But in my opinion, I don't think it would have been too expensive so most people could make use of them. I do know in some regions, pilgrims got free passage over bridges.
@@KobeanHistory That's totally fair! Do you have an idea of the ranges (and possibly example circumstances for them), or an idea of where I can learn about this?
@@magispitt I’m not sure, seeing as it’s usually governed by the local authorities I don’t think there will be a centralised place where all the info can be found. You could try to look for records from cities maybe, in case they had toll bridges. They might have kept some records of it but thats just my guess
I haven't kept note of all the sources I used but here are some that I remember: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/taxation-before-1689/ www.thehistoryoflondon.co.uk/custom-house/ www.castlesandmanorhouses.com/life_09_taxes.htm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_medieval_England

Accounting... one of the oldest and more boring jobs.
Nobody wants to pay the taxes and neither say calculate them.
