Of great interest to Tunisians. This is where their great ancestor Hannibal Barca defeated the Roman legions in the 2nd Punic War. It wasn't just a defeat. It was a one sided massacre. The Romans who weren't butchered drowned in the lake. This together with another defeat / massacre at Cannae 216 BCE, persuaded the Romans to avoid direct battle with Hannibal. They adopted a scorched earth and retreat policy which eventually wore down the Carthaginian army. The Italians have been retreating ever since.

Ciao
