  • Here is a tough how to video: removing the steering rack on a classic Saab 900 without removing the engine. Yes, it is possible. No, it is not easy.
This is was one of the most frustrating jobs I've done. It's up there along with the Focus alternator (which was before I started this channel) and the Focus thermostat. Over the course of a month of working on and off, I was able to mostly follow the Bentley manual and get the rack out.
I said I was following the Bentley manual but the video might not be in the same order as the steps. This was filmed over the course of a month and I forgot the order it was supposed to be in. There also might be consistency errors.
One more excuse, this was hard enough to do on it's own and even harder to do while filming. Apologies for not getting the best shot and missing some footage but hopefully this will help someone out there.

I've been working on these cars for a long time and have done almost everything except complete engine rebuild, and can honestly say this is the most tedious, difficult thing to have to do. Kudos to you for tackling this.

Great demo of a difficult job. I pulled mine when the engine was out. After watching your struggle, glad I did.

Got exactly the same problem ( boot filling with fluid) on a rack that I had professionally rebuilt less than 2000kms ago, so I have a similar experience to you.I am looking at your video for inspiration I think I will rebuild it myself this time

I didn't think it was too bad of a job but we don't have a lot of rust issues in western australia. For me the toughest bit was removing the drumsticks.

You still have to run the engine and turn the steering wheel to drain.
    You only drained the reseroar.
There is much more oil inside the rack that you should get out too... 😉👍
You can rebuild the rack without special tools.
    I did it without.
If you have a Facebook account, just find and add me as friend, and I will give you some guidance... And I can teach you how to pronounce my name... Hehe👌
And, Thanks for your greetings to me in your video.. 😇

I learned the hard way that I should start the engine to pump out all the fluid. There was a clip I cut out from final video that showed fluid completely raining on me when I tried to get the rack out. It was a HUGE mess...
I will definitely need some guidance on rebuilding the rack. I think we are already friends on facebook and once I'm ready to tackle the rebuild, I'll be sending you a message. I appreciate your help!

Changed a couple of these but never tried to rebuild one. Where do you find the parts?

@@karenfiedler1831 I was able to find a seal rebuild kit on rockauto. As for if the seal kit is any good, I haven't gotten there yet. I can see why most people either replace their rack or pay someone to do it for them. I'm currently recording the rack rebuild and it is a royal pain.
