Flathead Ford Engine Start Up

- we found this in a field. we kept the stock crank, rods, and pistons. this has new valves and guides. new crane cam, and aftermarket edelbrock heads, with fenton duel 2x2 intake with a pair of rebuilt holley 94's. i added headers with harley davidson mufflers, and a high torque mini starter. ive had some of my friends laugh at my color scheme, they thought it should be in a circus. a girl on a facebook page thought it was a spaceship so we launched it today.

idle sounds way too high
That's cool as shit. I'm 64, so I can I.D. a flathead just by the SOUND, which is very distinctive and brings back memories of Old School Hot Rods!
Seems kind of a shame to have it on a stand, should be sittin' between the fenders of a hot rod.
Put it in an old T pickup truck and smoke some pony car ass.
shred some tire
It should be in a T Bucket!
You definitely did a great job rebuilding it. It fired right up and sat at idle with no problems. 9:1 compression is great for a flathead and it looks and sounds like it makes gobs of torque. Good job dude!
Robert Keeton 9:1 compression is impossible on a flathead. he prolly got it wrong
Stock 1949 V8 was 6.8 compression ratio. I think these Edelbrock heads bump the ratio to 8.0
@@3beltwesty That's about right ...Trev NZ🇳🇿.,..idles a bit high though & there's a fair bit of mechanical noise: try an Isky 404 cam...cranes are always noisey.
I laugh every time someone wonders a v8 with six header runners. Good sound and what a handsome engine. No argument one of the best looking engines ever created. Want it louder? Id stuck a Isky 400 jr cam in there to give it that rumpity rump sound from about .400 lift which is the maximum that after market heads accept. When he revved it slightly that engine wanted to jump on the driveway.
It looks and sounds great. You did a nice job!
"A little quiet for my liking" X-D
Love this engine, good job and thanks for posting.
No noticable rumble from the exhaust, all you can hear are the lifters.
Beautiful. I really like the yellow.
That's an excellent color for a flathead V8 !...mine was the same color back in 1968 when flatheads were dirt cheap and everybody had orange small block Chevys.
Started right up & looks good!
Thumbs up for saving it! I found mine in a barn had been sitting for 60 years after ww2
That's awesome! Idle is quite high though. If that's not going into a car it would make a pretty cool generator!
I love the old Ford Flatheads. As a teenager, I wanted to have one with dual quads (and that was in 1994).
Cool! Looks really good.
Wow its a work of art!
Very nice Can't wait to hear mine run
A tad high idle isn't it?
yeah i think he is way to used to engines with huge cams in then.
First start. He has it idled up to break in the cam.
Very SWEET Sound.
This is so cool thanks for sharing!
great job, lookin good.
Nice work! Now put that thing in the Vette in the background also throw a supercharger on it that sticks out of the hood, so you can confuse your LS friends and they have to remember once again which engines stomped all over their small blocks even ten years after their introduction. Good luck!
Its idle is way to high.
...at least 2000 rpm--way too high--it should idle easily at around 5-600 rpm
They are supposed idle at 3400 RPMs.
Cam break in.
That was back in the day
Nothings sound beter than lada!
Hermoso Motor con extrordinari Sonido!!! Un saludo desde Argentina 🇦🇷
This is really awesome.
Flathead FordV8s have always been popular
Very good oil pressure and 9:1 compression to boot. Along with your Crane cam your current horsepower should be considerably beyond the original rating of100.
yellow looks nice on this engine
Beautiful motor
Very cool nice job
Turn it OFF!!
The idle is WAY too high!!!
+Lucky Dog I dont know what rpm he is running but I understand you should never idle an engine when new the cam will dig into the lifters, 12 to 1500 rpm till fully warm then maybe slower, not sure if this is true on flatheads but super slow idling with a flat tappet cam is not the best thing for it.. .
I bet it wont idle any slower coz it's not tuned right.
He's breaking in the cam. Wow so many Internet know it all mechanics
I think engines back then just idled higher than nowadays
@@nasseranise102 they idled lower back than then they do now. Opposite of what you said
Great video. Now I ponder why I never find anything cool in a field....
Once again, time to cook.
that's sweet, nice job...
Can you do a video of your stand? I have a flathead that I need to finish but I want to put it on a test stand so I can run it. Yours looks great by the way.Nice sound too.
Nice one, I'm looking at buying a '41. What did it cost you to rebuild that one?
Very cool!
Looks pretty good! But i would change the mufflers
very nice
That's real nice.
Awesome! What did you put it in?
very nice mate, it would look well in anything , but T bucket would be way cool ;),
just looking old mate, is that the fuel line a bit close to exhaust? hate to have a fire.
regards from across the pond.
Beautiful what are you going to put it in? Nice radiator.
I always here about flathead mercs Lincoln and Ford. Were they all different engines made by all three or same engines?
I'm on the Gulf coast also (MS)...wondering who does machine work on flatheads in this area? I have a 59A in a 34 ford truck I recently bought that I plan to rebuild, with a few performance goodies added also.
love the sound of a Flathead
Nothing like it. I can tell a flathead V8 ANYWHERE!
*KA-BOOM!!! LOL - **0:20** Q:Why wasn't the radiator propeller turning - Thermostat not hot enough?*
Thanks for the video. Now do you have a car to put it in?
what would you think needs adjusting?
Dayyummm nice vette you got LOTS of money!
This is the baby that Hank Ford used to blow away everything on the road in the 1930s. Comparing this to a 283 Chevy from the 50s is like apples and Watermellons.
What I would do, is right before the exhaust goes into the mufflers, plumb in left and right 2 inch, 90 degree gate valve.."non-brass" if you want "LOUD" then just open the valves of course you have gloves on.....then kick back and beer up and dig the sounds......
Did they always have twin carby's ?
How come it looks like there only 3 exhaust ports each side
Sweet!
as I do for you I can send the parts of an engine like that? I'm from Venezuela
Yep, idle is high. Should be 750rpm. That thing would sound awesome with zoomie pipes.
Flat head v8 was a loud engine. The idle was not too high. No wonder it only put out 84 hp with those headers.
Beauuuuuuuuutifuuuuul
Idle set at 2000 rpm ?
What vehicle is it going in?
Yeah, iddling way too fast, also that fan isn't turning so water isn't getting cooled. Beautiful engine, not sure about yellow though.
nice!
Runs so smooth like its fuel injected
Very Bad@55 motor , NICE!! Now you just need the coupe to go with it, lol
How come the fan is not turning
Wait if its a v8 why is there only 3 header holes on each side like a v6???
Why doesn't the fan spin?
Bonnie and Clyde would have been proud of you
Now, let's get in and drive it...wait...what?
sounds lust like the lego model I saw before this video
Is the water pump even got a belt on it? Needs idled down a bit ay? Great job! Now shock it n a frame wit wheels on it!
The water pumps are on the sides, the belt is running them.
Dude.....that's a thrashing machine
the fan blade is not turning. it'll run hot. oh. your gonna need a belt too. nice job. looks and runs good..
Dang, that's impressive... it'd be neat to figure a HP rating.. gotta be a coupla hundred.. ya think? Bad A$$!!
MY KIND OF TRIKE!:)
Tengo un ford del año 1937 y quiero saber es modelo sedan o deluxe quiero saber que motor debo comprar con aireacondicionado el valor y el mejor modelo
Beautiful engine. Are you planning to put it in a vehicle?
Idle to high an sittin the battery on concrete 😂😂
Having a battery on concrete doesn't hurt anything, that's a myth.
So good but just needs some adjustments.
idle's a little high isn't it? should be around 750, sounds like its up around 1200.
if i had that it would be in my living room
tooooooop :)
I see a lot of comments about the idle speed if this is the first fire up maybe breaking the new cam?
@@guyvanbrussel9772
That reply you just gave proved to me you know nothing about engines.
@@guyvanbrussel9772
Engines made before the 80's commonly had flat tappet cams. They need to be broken in by running at approx 2000 rpm for 20-30 minutes. The reason for that rpm is to make sure the cam and lifters are getting enough oil. Manufactures went away from flat tappets and use roller cams now which don't need that break in period.
@@guyvanbrussel9772
Settle down. The break in was done at the factory. No one said a manufacturer required a buyer to do it. But if a flat tappet engine gets rebuilt it still needs the cam broken in.
@@guyvanbrussel9772
You just proved you know nothing about engines.
Gold
they have put one 1 inch stroker crankshaft in them bore them completely out 303 CI DENVER HEAD supercharger and they will kick ass
I thought it was v6.
Two cylinders share an exhaust port?
Yes. Kinda different but cool.
El carro no está original pero lo quiero restaurar nesecito saber cuales son los motores modernos
...how about that fuel line bouncing right above the exhaust headers....
Oh I bet your neighbors love you ha ha...F 'em....NICE!
It's interesting that even though it's a V-8 engine it only has 3 exhaust ports on each head. The two center cylinders must share the same exhaust port.
They do share the same exhaust port which is cast in the block. Thats why it needs two water pumps and a massive radiator
Joe Vignolo .. Right.
The siamesed center exhaust port seriously hampers exhaust velocity. Both Cadillac, and Studebaker, shared this design flaw. What were they thinking ?
I run Harley muffler on my M.G.✌
What kind of bird is that?
I'm work I ng on making the one I have run and we are putting it in a 1940 ford pickup truck
You know those things have a function. If you put that in the front of a car it will move the car. Mounting it to a metal frame sitting in your driveway doesn't move the car down the road.
¿Para que lo puso en un carrito?
They are supposed to idle at 3,200 RPMs, otherwise they will hit the lower rev limiter.
Nesecito tu ayuda lo tengo con un motor de petróleo perkin f108
I like the wolf whistle. The idle is way too high
Cam break-in requires 2000 RPM or better for maybe 20 minutes or so.
We didn't have the fan running for safety precautions. Hate to see it fly off and hurt someone Raul Leon
THE PLASTIC GAS LINE LAYING AGAINST THE EXHAUST PIPE IS A NICE TOUCH> Better buy yourself a fire extinguisher bubby.
So basically the most important part is the engine block, nobody makes that aftermarket.
Everything else is bolt-on aftermarket for 0.5 dollars @ JEGS or something xD
