I just found this channel about 3 months ago. I been on yt for 12yrs.. I love this guy! Especially the "silverwolves".. but everytime I think Ive watched all his vids, a different one pops up from yrs back!
Great information brother. This was a well thought out video and information I bet many people have never thought about. I remember you telling me about getting sick from the raw chicken water on that outing and I can see how that would happen easily. Once you experience that misery once, it makes you a lot more cautious forever more. Keep up the great work my friend!
To prolong your ice, take a gallon jug and freeze water in it. The solid ice will prolong the life of the chunk ice you get from the gas station plus the melted ice jug makes cold drinking water. Coolers with wheels are worth their weight in gold.
Coleman made/use to make a large steel belted cooler. When hunting in Arizona, ice is paramount! I would use a smaller cooler for my meats and place that inside the large Coleman for extra insulation. When I get to the last place for ice I remove the meat cooler and fill the other one up with block ice. A trip to a good hunting area is usually 8-10 hours and have seen many hunters return with their prize on the top of their gear so everyone can see their buck. Problem is they probably shot it on opening morning and hung around 4-5 days for their buddy to get one. The temperature in the high country during deer season just does not get cool enough to hang deer that long. It might drop to 25 at night but in the daytime it's 60-65. Then they drive south to Phoenix or Tucson for 10-14 hours. No wonder deer don't taste good in AZ. We butchered our deer ASAP and put it on ice. Frozen 1/2 gallon milk jugs last a long time if kept out of the sun. I saw many people walk out the grocery store going camping and did not follow any rules for raw meat handling. Everything was bumped in a cooler. My raw meat was always stored in time proven Tupperware AND I followed proper raw meat handling rules. Don't get me started on construction workers throwing bags of ice on the ground and then placing the whole thing in the water cooler!! Now I live in northern PA and my biggest problem during deer season is how to keep my drinks from freezing. Looking forward to seeing more on family camping.
Absolutely agree with preparation and organization makes camping more fun. Have done this many times in week long fishing trips to Canada where no stores were available
I enjoy the family camping info. I’m camping this weekend with a family of five. Thank you for posting. I like my Yeti clone cooler where I need long term cooling. However, it is so insulated there is not much room in it. My Igloo cooler is the same size but has much more room in it. Probably dangerous, but for meat, I’ve used Ziplock bags that are tall enough to keep the top well out of the ice and water and drain often. This keeps the water away from the meat. Of course, if the bags tip, the water isn’t safe.
I have taken old emergency blankets and cut them to the sizes I needed and put a Gorilla tape border on each. It very much helps keep the ice frozen and the cold in. I had to agree with you on the extra prep at home make it much better while camping. It would be great to get specific on this home prep like you, Mrs. Blackie are taking 3 grand kids 10, 12, 14 camping and what you would do in a step by step fashion. Great post!
I'm curious I have a theory we all know How hot a tent can get in the sun and we would all prefer set up in shade but if you used a mylar blanket on the roof of your tent will it make a difference Have you ever tried it
You are right! I also use different coolers and I have a dry box. Drinks are always in a cooler by themselves! My experience is the cooler with drinks always melts faster! Good video with good info! Great job!
It sure did, I learned some stuff I didn't know that will be very helpful because I have threw my drinks and raw meats in the same cooler. Now I did knew not to use that ice for drinks but I'm sure the cans/bottles were contaminated but I never got sick. I seen a youtube video where the guy made a cozy for his cooler using the silver bubble wrap for air ducts, said it kept ice a lot longer. Maybe you said it but I didn't here it, keep cooler out of sun as much as possible, even if you have to move it several times a day. I like the chuck box idea. Great tips and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video My mind almost went down that rabbit hole of freeze dried crap because you never see anybody using or talking about coolers when doing bushcraft or woodcraft videos They allude to the idea that family camping is somehow less respectable because of the gear required to ensure that the family enjoys the time in the woods Thanks for waking me up before I did something stupid
to my way of thinking..a comfort/camp for the family is the way to bring in the next generation..if they are having fun..they can explore and build a love of the woods and nature..if its all survival it will seem like a challenge not a enjoyment..or as a wise old woodsman once said.."we go to the woods to smooth it"
excellent video, pretty much the camping me and my dad did deer hunting, we would be in south texas for 2 weeks at a time 150 miles from civilization, fun time i miss them, some other tips we did, when we iced the cooler we would freeze bottles and lay them in the cooler on the floor and close the lid for about an hour had a whole cooler of meat spoil cause of heat from the ground radiate up, 2nd dad would always salt the ice in the meat cooler to keep the ice longer and prevent contamination, 3rd we had old blankets we would use to wrap the coolers and set under them to further insulate them, thats just what we did in our enviroment, great vid Blackie!
Great advise. I also use an old cooler some to wrap up meat that has just come off the fire to keep in warm while a finish the rest of my meal. Keep the videos coming.
One thing I do is I keep all the dry goods together with any consumable items. I’ve noticed that some folks will tend to keep spices with their cooking tools. Several of the gear manufacturers such as gsi and msr have kitchen tool kits that combine cooking utensils with cleaning utensils and spice and oil containers. I typically keep all my consumables dry goods, oils, cleaning supplies in a ‘pantry box.’ I then have a cooler or two, and a tool box/chuck box with the cooking tools and pots and pans. I’m planning to do a video on this setup.
If one of your coolers designated for drinks only add a little water into it at the time your filling it with ice and drinks that way it will displace the dead air space between drinks and ice and water being a conductor of heat or cold will conduct more cold to the drinks faster without the dead air space insulating it from the ice drink often become cold in around 20 minutes as apposed to several hours
i made relfectix liners{these work great} for my coolers and freeze half of my bottles of water for both my drink and food coolers also a wire shelf in the food cooler keeps things like cheese and lunch meats and fruits /veggies up out of the water raw meats can be vacuum sealed put in a seal-able bowl and kept on the bottom until needed
Excellent video.. I plan on doing a truck camper build and I was planning on keeping all my food in one cooler. Now I’m going to re-think 🤔 what I would bring and maybe get 2 coolers..
Another great video with great advice. What is the tent/lean to at 0.14 into the opening and where might I find information on it? Thanks and keep them coming.
Does the reflective property of reflectix or aluminum foil help to cool when placed inside a cooler, where it is dark most the time, or is it solely the added insulation?

you Absolutely correct. Paul and Ohio. I really enjoy your show. Thank you very much

Excellent topic to cover. There are many of us who like to camp out and relax with the family
Good information! It’s always great to be reminded of the does and don’t!

It's nice to hear celebrities quoting scripture
Great info on having just a meat cooler. Great content.
Blackie, thanks for sharing !
You made a lot of good points that I never thought of. Thank You
VERY GOOD VIDEO! SO many I think just over look food cross contamination.

If you have a long drive, Dry ice and duct ape will keep it frozen.
Great advise. I also use an old cooler some to wrap up meat that has just come off the fire to keep in warm while a finish the rest of my meal. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for the wisdom!!
I did mostly charter boat camping for 25 years. an unopened tapped cooler will last 4-5 days in the tropics

good idea..i have on long trips frozen water jugs and even some things like koolaid to be a cold and a when melted water source
Excellent video.. I plan on doing a truck camper build and I was planning on keeping all my food in one cooler. Now I’m going to re-think 🤔 what I would bring and maybe get 2 coolers..
if raw meat is going 2 coolers is the way to go for sure..one will do if its cooked meats or lunchemeat that sort of thing
Another great video with great advice. What is the tent/lean to at 0.14 into the opening and where might I find information on it? Thanks and keep them coming.
Like and us the frozen milk jug idea in coolers and in freezer in case power goes out during a storm for a day or two or when out of town
Another technique that works well is to have a cooler that is cooled by dry ice, in addition to the insulating methods already described here.
Does the reflective property of reflectix or aluminum foil help to cool when placed inside a cooler, where it is dark most the time, or is it solely the added insulation?
In the old school cooler they would use block of ice ?
yes..when i was small we still had a ice house in my town..where you would pull in and they would load large blocks of ice in cooler boxes
