How to Create Latte Art in Photoshop
Learn how to take any photo and convert it into latte art using our free custom brush and the smudge tool!
How to Remove Original Designs
Removing the original latte art design may be necessary, depending on the image you start with. In this example, we created a custom brush made of tiny dots. Using the brush dialog ‘Window-Brush’, we add size jitter, angle jitter, and scattering.
This creates many different dots of color as you paint, recreating the latte texture and allowing you to remove any existing latte art. Download the brush we use in this episode below.
Use Filters to Convert Photos to Art
In this example we use a photo of a lion to create latte art. Because latte art is made of foam, we need the design to be one color, and as simple as possible. Using the ‘cutout’ filter in the ‘filter gallery’, we simplified the shape and color of the original photo, making it perfect for latte art. You can use this filter with any image in photoshop.
Use the Smudge Tool to Create Streaks
The next step is to make the latte art look as though it was created by hand - not Photoshop. To create latte art, a barista will drag a small tool through the foam to create a design in the cup. In this case we are using a digital version of the same tool - the smudge tool. Start by creating small streaks to get the hang of it, and when you are ready, make large bold streaks.
Finishing Steps
To add more texture at the end, use a ‘spatter’ filter in the ‘filter gallery’ to give the edges a more realistic look. Then use the brush we created at the beginning of the episode to add small dark spots, imitating bubbles in the latte!
Did you know there is a lot more to PHLEARN than RUclips? phlearn.com/more
It's cool to see how photographers/painters have such a different workflow from us VFX artists.
We'd probably look for or create a still oh a Latte without art, match lighting and mask it in. Or computer generating the coloured dots with a particles system or a replicator a script instead of painting it.
But very cool workflow learned a lot that I would use.
I love so much how you placed your video in the Photoshop image navigation pane ~~ Clever clever
Wow, one of the best tutorials what I saw of all time. I mean the timeline of the video, overviews and summary. Amazing :-)
Pretty impressive result there... Thx Aaron, very inspiring techniques...
This is great, i do alot of latte art, and photoshop, the great thing is the smudge technique cause it mimic's
the etching technique in latte art, and people can do stuff very similar to this so it's believable, nice work Aaron

Awesooome 60fps :D Sweet camera as well.
Watching this murdered my temp-folder
You really don't need a latte experience to do this!
You're awesome!!! =)
Sir, this tutorial is very good but i have some problem would you please suggest what kind of image should be used so that we can have those latte. the image i used is not clear and does not give us such kind of look.
Muito Bom....Parabéns pela aula professor.
When I use the filter gallery. No box appeasers, it changes the image slightly but I don't see a box.
On my iPad Aaron this video looks amazing! According to the comments below you shot this at 60fps? I thought it might be a 4K video which its its? Thx
Very interesting :D
Love the 60fps xD
Hi, I could use frequency separation to keep the "bubbles" and just paint the low part, right?
will this work without a wacom tablet?
Did you switch up your cameras?
Great video, I'm going to have to try this out now!
Feels like watching the news.... ;)
can you erase the original latte art by using frequency seperation and painting over it using the latte color and preseving the textures?
what is the name of the touchpad you are using? :) great video
Downloaded the brush and when i try to paint inside of a coffee, the "spots" from the brush are all over the place. i cant get it centered to make it usefull. Where am i going wrong? Also the brush size makes a difference, but to keep the brush spots in the cup it has to be like 10 pixls sized and then it still takes like 1 hour to fix the latte art from the original pic. arrrggggg
Now I want coffee
Question: Will this work similarly in versions of Photoshop as old as CS6 (13.0)?
I made latte for myselfe now
Did you change to 60fps video? Because when you are talking on camera it looks a bit creepy. Like there is a little you inside my iPad =P
you totally nailed it. inside John Malkovich.
+Samtagri yes xDD
How do you get like the little coulour circle around your cursor at some times?😁
Like it is at 7:51
+CooperDesigns just for a split second though😂
+CooperDesigns Hold ALT while using the Brush Tool to sample a colour.
Lukas Berger thanku!
I have photoshop CC 2015 and I dont see my smudge tool anywhere :/
HI..I love your techniques and they help me a lot, a lot, a lot......I was trying to create a war scene with soldiers, planes, tanks, blasts, missiles fired from tanks...e.t.c ..am not asking for whole video tutorial but just how to add these elements and blend them so that they look real. Like i try to add soldiers i find difficulty in making them look real and to place them in such a position that looks like they are fighting enemies is much more difficult to me ...I hope u understood my problem ...a solution to this would be much appreciated. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials.
I think that the stamp tool would be a lot better than making that brush with all that dots, because the coffee has bubbles and a lot of things that are missed when covered.
+Verónica Sugueti García maybe
Would it have been easier to just paint over the original latte art using a regular brush, apply some noise to it and then create a brush to add some bubbles back into it?
Hey Aaron can the next vid please be a double exposure effect
from which website do u download these types of images?
plz i am curious
what if the picture is not the right color to match the "foam"
So i have a picture with multiple colors in it how do i make it so its like whiteish or the lion color?
same here
I loaded the brush into photoshop but it is not the same brush as the Aaron uses. Why would this be?
i cant find the download
Is there a specific reason you used a mouse to create your brush rather than your pen and tablet?
Can you please show how to bring out pixel information from a real dark object without using the Shadows/Highlights feature in Image menu? Thank you.
+Patrik Radelj That selects it. If the image has Low Dynamic Range, color range doesn't always help.
Hi , Aaron Nace. I thought that you were Moriarty for a second! ;)
Why not just use the brush tool instead of reading the brush preset? Just curious.
Mac u better Keep Up!
Could you do an episode on : How to make a fire blast in PS ? :)
any chance I could get the original picture ?
For erasing it couldnt you just do a frequency separation and erase it respecting the texture?
Where Can I Get The Pen Thingy Your Using??
That is a Wacom Intuos Pro Small
3rd!
What if your image's colour isn't cream/ latte coloured?
what about a video on app design
Wtf I had a add before the video with your introduction music !
When the screen turned black for the next scene i tapped on my screen bc i thought my phone was going on lock lol
Can you do vectors please :)
Wow, here I thought these were real cappuccinos!
I want to try this with someones face 😂 awesome video!
Me too😂 did it work for you?
+MrConminer I've not yet tried it! Have been really busy with work and other stuff, as soon as I have got it and it looks kinda OK I'll let you know (:
Thank you !
very good Nace ........ Please my one project is pending ..... make car exchange effect ... i mean old car is blast coming inside new car please please please please .........
My smudge tool does not finger paint like you show. Why? It is acting like a layer mask and just painting over the image. WTF
Do you have another tutorial that's similar to this? I want to use animals in it but I can't just match animal heads to bodies!
copy(kopi) means coffee in bahasa
Really!? I needed this like 2 weeks ago ;(. This always happens.
Constructive Criticism: I feel like the light in this video was far too bright and the camera not cropped close enough in on you.
+97BuckeyeNut Same here
hahaha
God he's such a flirt

+Phlearn Photoshop and Photography Tutorials 60 fps is beautiful. keep it up
