Look up Antares Harmony Engine or Polyverse Manipulator - they allow midi controlled harmonization with formant preservation.

I don't think VocalSynth 2 sounds this good. The timestretching or whatever magic in that thing is top-notch. And of course Jacob is a top-notch wielder of the tool!
Hey Jacob. I've got a 1972 Moog MiniMoog. And guess what, I can make the notes bend, because inside there's a magic Ooflelizer that creates Madoogie waves that make all sorts of amazing things come through my speakers. Also when I send a duel oscillator sine wave through the Axamozzenzi box (purchased from Planet Tharg) you wouldn't believe what what it can sound like.......

I am trying to understand EXACTLY how this works. Every harmonizer I've seen works by detecting the pitch of the input and transposing it up or down by pre-determined intervals, either fixed (major third, for example), or according to a key (diatonic third). It appears that yours works differently. You sing a melody, and the line is transposed to all the pitches equivalent to the notes you play on your keyboard. In other words, the intervals between the original and the harmonized notes is constantly changing, the actual harmonized pitches is determined by the keyboard and not the pitch you sing, and you use the MIDI keyboard to specify the final, transposed notes, rather than the intervals. Is that close to correct?

it seems like a vocoder with more math involved, it sounds more pitches than notes he is pressing down
It does seem similar to a vocoder, but either they've found the perfect carrier, or they've implemented it differently.
It could be closer to granular repitching with some sort of formant preservation algorithm (akin to Live's Complex Pro warping function, but in real time)
Truly impressive either way.

@@Johnwilkinsonofficial It is but the massive minds at MIT who built it for him managed to take his to a new level and make it so that it samples separately per note to each timbre on each key in relation to the timbre of how he's singing. Which is something no manufactured Harmonizer available for purchase can do as they usually only adjust your voice on pitch only and not timbre. That's also why his sounds so good. His Harmonizer is a step above any Harmonizers EVER lol! It's literally one of a kind. At least as I type this...

+Chance Devlin unlike a vocoder, it actually downsamples the full frequencies of the exact audio out (almost in real time) and transposes it across whichever keys, as oppose to a vocoder, which usually takes the sibilant/speaking frequencies from your voice but disregards its pitch; any melody will come from the signal sent from the synthesiser you play.

Chance Devlin it's actually a custom-made device. There is some software (izopotope nectar is a pretty good plug-in) and hardware (tc helicon), but non are on par with his specialised pedal.

Isn't this just a harmoniser, loads of people use them, TC Helicon do great ones.
they do, but only with 4 voices, except the perform-ve, which goes up to 8, but is in mono and doesn't sound that great. his goes to 12 voices and has stuff like polyphonic portamento, freeze and the voices are panned individually to the left or right. he uses a modded version of antares' harmony engine, so that it goes up to 8 voices i think, and a voicelive touch for the upper four voices, because of its vibrato effect. he somehow got a babyface to route the midi by voices, so that he ensures something always plays when he adds a note, as long as he stays below 12 simultaneous voices. the midi routing is the hard part.

Commercially produced harmonizers, including TC Helicon, are inferior to his. Although, still pretty cool. I use TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 and it's amazing.

it's a modded version of harmony engine by antares, and a tc-helicon voicelive touch. they get midi from his keyboard, which first goes through a babyface to route it to the computer running harmony engine and the voicelive touch. the hard part is that the voices he's playing are routed individually, it can't just say "everything above a middle c goes to the voicelive touch", because then, if he plays more than four notes above a middle c, some of them wouldn't play. in total it has 12 voices of polyphony, the lower eight are from the computer running harmony engine, so they are panned to different places and can do stuff like freeze and polyphonic portamento. the upper four voices are from the tc-helicon, because it has a very realistic vibrato effect.
I'm curious now if JC uses this to vocode his harmonies on the you tube vids, eg Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing. I always assumed he vocalised each harmony line?

I've read somwehere that it's a custom box built by MIT. There's plenty of plugins (A little bit rough on the latency) and hardware (A little bit rough on your wallet) that will do something similar though, but their voicing won't be as extensive as JC's box.

Yes he does. he just uses the harmonizer on stage. He never records with the harmonizer
