Jonas is always a little extra gullible when it comes to Martha, even when he's trying to be on his guard 😅 The Stranger was wary of alt Martha but even then he just accepts the little cesium fuel pod thingie without further questions, when I expected him to ask her about how her time contraption worked (he just kind of assumes it's only for interdimension travel?) and if she could possibly take him and everyone else out of the 1800s. He's essentially paving his own road to becoming Adam and probably realizes it too late when she's gone...and then he is Adam and he's pulling strings all over again 😬 I really like the Sic Mundus/Erit Lux headquarters. Both of them. Adam's version a little more maybe, because there are tons of books and all his interesting clutter collection from what I assume are different periods of time, and it looks warmer. But Eva's version is so polished and sleek and impressive, although perhaps a little less warm in a sense because of the very reason. I'm parroting what I picked up a while back on the name of her organization so if I'm wrong someone correct me, but 'let there be light' is more accurately translated to 'Fiat Lux', whereas 'Erit Lux' is 'there will be light', which sounds a bit more determined, inevitable, orchestrated almost, similar to how things in Eva's world are seemingly more orchestrated in nature as well, as opposed to the events in Adam's world where they happen a little more 'organically', for the lack of a better term. There are still quite a few episodes left so you'll discover the answers eventually ^^ Looking forward to the rest!
I debated what exactly Adam and Eva wanted with myself for a significant part of this season. You seem to have formulated your view already. Do you remember how Martha's very first line was about how she would not eat while there were starving children out in the world? Reminds me of Eva. Think of the children, save them. Meanwhile Jonas' first instinct throughout season 1 was to bring Mikkel back and prevent his own existence. So that's what characterises Jonas drive throughout. He's constantly looking for a way to end things, but more importantly is entirely willing to sacrifice himself to do so. But people ask, how did he turn into Adam? Well we already see now how close to Adam he already was, and how the last step from "self-annihilation" to annihilation is to encompass more than just himself. He has to do is decide not only is it better if he doesn't exist, but he also has to decide for other people that their lives aren't worth living either. That suffering is worse than never being born in the first place. He probably thinks he has increased his empathy by realising that it's not only himself that is sick.
I don’t know if I’ve formulated my view just yet, it was more so just going through some of the broad strokes the show has established for them. There is still half a season, I will have more thoughts on motivations ✌🏼
Filmbuff always uploads right when I'm making lunch and I watch while I eat. I know you don't mean for that to happen for me specifically, but I just love it anyway! Will be back after cooking 😅
Really good catch about how older Martha 2's acting shows that she cares a lot for Jonas. I didn't even catch that until now. The next episode is going to be something for sure 👀
This episode always felt a little uneventful to me, but the more I viewed it, the more I could see a few important things happened. Thanks again for another good reaction!
Your review is always on point. Some other reactors pick up a lot, but you even see some things coming, from your careful analysis of what went on and what things you saw. It's rare for someone to just talk to themselves for half an hour and come up with several quite sound conclusions. All the following is spoiler-free of course, you already discovered most of it yourself... One thing i would suggest is to look into two important philosophers: Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche. Both are quoted in the show. If you familiarize yourself a bit with their body of work, it could lead to more interesting discoveries. The overall concept discussed in the series is free will vs. causal determinism, also worth looking into specifically, but you'll come across it inevitably when looking at Schopenhauer's philosophy. Your observation about Adam and Eva wanting to destroy and uphold the cycle, respectively, is quite correct: Adam wants to achieve/reach "Nirvana" and Eva wants to achieve/reach "Samsara". One final thing about the pronounciation of Hanno "Tauber", you say it like "toober" which is quite wrong, the "au" in "Tau" is like the "thou" in "thousand", just with a T and not a TH 😉
One aspect that I noticed about Dark is how it likes to play with themes. By this episode it has become quite apparent that there is the theme of light vs dark. Two sides acting as opposites, Adam's world, representing darkness and Eva's world, representing light. They're symbolized by many aspects, including the visual effect of their respective time machines and the general look of their future. But the show also likes to deconstruct tropes, in this case, whereas light and darkness usually also represent a struggle between good and evil, life and death, here both sides seem to ultimately want to cause the apocalypse. I have more to say on this topic, but it'll have to wait for later, maybe the finale so I can vent all of my thoughts without risking a spoiler.
The stranger used the Tannhaus machine to travel with the kids.the apocalypse seemed to send them way further than they intended and broke their machine though.
Oh yeah, meant to comment on the last video, what you discovered from the family tree makes the opening scene of season 2 that much more poignant, when you see bartosz’s lip quiver it just hits me like a brick

Oh I wouldn’t forget that 😁
what I meant was how did the Stranger escape it the first time, when he was young Jonas. Should have made it more clear.
good point, hal.

I lost it at this moment because when I first watched it I thought it was Mikkel. But it's just an actor that looks the same.

well.. my interest in this show kinda died off here. too fast paced.. too 'random' but.. understandably so.
just lost my interest idk why
How the hell is this too random? They are showing in full detail how the cycle works
