Driving a Road Legal R56 Mini Challenge with 280bhp...SIMPLY AWESOME !

- Take an R56 Mini Cooper S, give it to Sussex Road and Racing, and they will turn it into a fully race prepared Mini Challenge car that you can race AND drive on the road. When they asked if I wanted to drive it, I bit their hand off !!!!
It has a highly tuned forged engine with an uprated turbo, producing 280bhp. Race brakes provide the stopping power and a Quaife LSD get the power on the tarmac. The Quicksilver Exhaust sounds awesome and the most important thing is this car is LIGHT ! It is totally stripped out with a full integral roll cage and fire extinguisher system...THE PERFECT TRACK DAY WEAPON !

Peter I have to agree this is one of the best videos so far. Kudos to SSR, what an amazingly well set up car. I've been a Mini enthusiast since I was seventeen & many years later ( no I'm not saying how many !!) I still have that passion for them. On number seven of the BMW MINI's. My JCW Coupe is a blast & I'll probably get buried in it (lol) !! Thanks so much for inviting us into this car - I felt like I was in the co-pilots seat. Fan bloodytastic !!

Ooh, I'll definitely have some of that Peter. My third Mini back in 1969 was a naturally aspirated 1340c.c. Cooper S & that went like stink ........ until I blew it up !

You don't know what you are missing until you drive one. Mine has been in my garage for 6 months and today is the first day I drove it again and I realized I missed it so much. Nothing like a JCW Mini, they are very quick around the bends. I really don't need any other sports car, this will do for me.
I totally agree, I drive one as my daily. One day I hope to have a race car built just like this one :-)
Yea, next step for mine is a stage II program and that will give me 19 lbs of boost in over boost. Can't wait.

something to keep in mind is that stock mini r56s are only 1150 kilos so a stripped one like this could easily be under 1 tonne so this could be a 300bhp per tonne pocket rocket which is as much or more than a new bmw m5 plus the handling benefits of being half the weight :)

Crazy you can fast forward 2 years and there’s a lot of r56 making close to double that power with the same light weight! That’s better power to weight than a brand new Chiron super sport 😩🤓💯

Love these, the mini challenge is brilliant to watch, the jcw minis are on with the touring cars give or take a couple of meets, but they are huge fun to watch

Just went to coil overs on my R56, must say vast improvement. Though if you want to retain some comfort go for a set that retains the oem front top mounts

Really great video, thank you. Beautifully shot and composed. Very few vids of challenge cars on the road. Not what they are for of course, but still very interesting. I think you’ll find that it is no lighter than the std car however, due to roll cage. Seems the traction cntrl kicked in at one point. I’m surprised that this has not been disabled on this car, if not turn it off. Thank you

Hi Peter, are the breaks standard with a sport edge to them or CCB's it must go like stink it sounds very very fast and after watching the trees rush by you must be doing 42 Mph :) but 280 BHP in a car that size and weight must be like a ICBM to drive. Regards Alan B :) :)
It has a speed limiter set to 40 mph...up till that speed it felt very fast ;-)
WOW 40 never looked so fast next time I take my S-Max out I will get the wife to film me doing 40 Mph and attempt to make the trees rush past like yours did I had no Idea Photoshop / Movie maker could do that.
Just set the video speed to x2 or x4 !!!!
Have you drove a mk4 golf r32 if not u want to drive one of those I have now got both a mini r53 and a r32 the golf had it decat stage 2 remapped and it kicks out 300bhp fast as owt the mini will out run it in corners but not on straight

This was an R56 so a 1.6. Not sure about the turbo sorry 😪

Love this video.. but it's easy to get these cars to 300HP+ these days. I know this is an R56 but mine F56 is at 300HP

@@PetrolPed I'm not trying to argue but my previous R56 had 275hp. For me it was which ECU tune I went with, mods, and removing extra weight.

It has been blanked off. It was for internal ventilation but when it rained the water came into the cabin !

You don't need to go all the way. A bit more punch is always needed.
if you used that mini as a daily driver you would be baned in no time I know I would lol that's the basic lanser evo power in a wee stripped out mini .I would love one without being stripped out just the racing set up and the tunned engine thought the mini cooper s has a Peugeot engine the Peugeot 1,6 rcz & 209 GTi has a 270 BHP engine as standard ??
You would also walk around with a permanent smile on your face :-)
next time you test a mini turn off traction control it kills preformance

+Jolly Nige. Including sourcing a donor car (£1.5 - 2k) it is in the region of £15-17k depending on how you spec it. I know because it want to have one built now 😂

Standard Mini block with forged pistons and improvements to help deal with the extra power from the remap.
Get on the forums, there's a few 320bhp+ r56's about 👌
SRR have a 350bhp F56 in the making. I hope to get to drive it when it's ready :-)
The thing that made this car so special was how light it was. Coupled with the power it made a great combination.

Hi Jonathan. Yes, about that. If you allowed £1.5-2k for the donor car you could get it done for £15-17k all in. It obviously depends on how you spec the car and finish it but I have had a quote as I may be getting one built myself :-)
I absolutely love my R56 coopers done a lot to it and plans for lots more great video.
